Former two not part of the Franchise and are vaguely similar. And Lewis Gilbert was just lazy. You could even throw Moonraker in there. All have similar plot lines. (I love all three of those Gilbert movies btw).
It doesn't help that Lazenby was revoiced for Sir Hillary. I don't think ever I've seen an English speaking actor's voice being replaced for a big portion of a movie with the voice of another English speaking actor. I otherwise like that act a lot. Bond having to deal with being replaced by a black female is actually incredibly interesting to me. Feels fresh and modern and is something we've never had to see him face before. It also has historical/metaphorical implications as well. Bond is retired, in Jamaica, at the beginning of the film. Jamaica, of course, was formerly under British rule. Jamaica has "moved on" without the British, same as the 007 role has "moved on" without Bond. It's symbolic, reverential, and steeped in Bond tradition. I love this so much. Great thread on the subject by one of the most knowledgeable Bond fans around...

That's so dumb. Why reuse the codename? Just give her 009 or something.

Why is it dumb? "How does Bond react to being replaced?" is such an interesting way to go. After 24 movies, it's actually something we haven't seen him have to deal with yet, and such a fresh way to challenge him outside of whatever the villain plot is. Story-wise, this is first news that has really made me stand up and pay attention and get excited. Why would we not want fresh? He's still going to be Bond and do everything Bond does. And he'll likely get the moniker back at some point, some way. So what's the difference?
And you're right. The "statement" is, "You've been replaced." How does Bond deal with that? How does Bond deal with a changing world? I can't imagine wanting to just keep the same old status quo here. Given the previous four Bond movies, and the times we live in, this feels like the perfect, natural way to go. To me, it's almost irresponsible and tone def to not address something along these lines, even in the smallest of ways. And they're seemingly addressing it in a way that again, is symbolic and reverential and makes sense for the character/franchise.

But if it was any other code name (009, etc.), it wouldn't be as personal for him. He has to LOSE something meaningful. And then likely want it back. I'm also just curious to see the protocol / official reasoning/dialogue surrounding it, if only to understand how the 007 moniker even works.
I can see it finishing with him accepting his loss of the number, but when he's asked his name, he says the iconic line. End it how it "began". (Ending of Casino Royale.)
I forgot, how did Casino Royale in that regard?
