Yep, it is sometimes this, or the demented person comes to the realizattion that the normal person just does not love them like they used to (not realizing that it is because they have lost their minds)...that they only seem to love the kids. They were probably fighting a lot, or at least butting heads/not seeing eye-to-eye, I would imagine.
My wife had what almost seemed like postpartum depression for a brief period when our daughter was an infant, although i would probably call it "postparturm exhaustion"...and after a couple of spicy verbal fights at 3 or 4am in the morning, I quickly realized that the best approach at night time when one or both of us was waking up to care for the baby is just to not even talk to each other. Just agree to that, and do our jobs focusing only on the baby. We can talk later when we are thinking straight and not tired from waking up from deep sleep.
All that to just reiterate how stressful it can be to have one infant as a normal healthy couple...but they had three children, while mommy was in a severe mental decline. I cannot imagine what he went through dealing with all of that, much less his horrific eventual discovery. I would imagine they got in some pretty awful fights.
