I haven't combed through all of the recent posts, but is $1.5 billion a likely finishing point for The Odyssey?

Yeah, but imagine if they hadn't gone woke with the casting. There at least seven more tickets they could have sold.

I mean, you do $80M on Sat and $60M on Sun, both of which I think are laughably low, and you've cleared $300M.

I'm at theater for Spider-Man now, and this place is packed. Every since the pandemic the theater nearest me has been empty, to the point I keep expecting it to be shut down. When we came to see Disclosure Day, my son and I were the only ones in the theater. The Odyssey was about 3/4 full on opening night. Today, though, the line was out the door to get in (haven't seen that since College Station). Every Spider-Man showing today is essentially sold out (no more than 2 seats together). It's crazy how busy this place is. I haven't seen anything like this since the pandemic... Are movies back?

What's crazy is not only this weekend being either the #1 or #2 biggest weekend BO of all time, but the fact that it could very well be toppled in December.

If this was college football, the sips just had a last minute TD with an overhyping broadcaster.

Not saying movie theaters are going to crater after this year….its just too early to say anything with only having one year showing actual strong positive growth….

Let it marinade for a bit….

Definitely feels like it did 10-15 years ago at the theater today. Pretty awesome to see. Though, even the big, flagship AMC here in LA is severely understaffed. Kind of crazy they weren't more prepared.

A weak joke, but comparing the comment movies are back to one of the greatest recent sports meme….

While it's been awesome, it's also only been 7 months of awesome compared to years of not….this year will be great….but let's have great theater performances 3-4 years in a row before we declare they're back.

Oops wrong thread...

On another note, finally saw Disclosure Day and I give it about 2 stars, what a let-down.

168 million through Friday domestically…too bad Disney won't be getting very much of the massive profit this movie is going to be…

$102M for Spidey on Sat, which prob puts you at $80+M on Sunday, but not quite $350M.

Glad I didn't bet that one on Kalshi. (I did on "not over 90% on RT", which cashed out at exactly 90%, which bought dinner and multiple drinks at the bougie oyster place next to the Spidey theatre.)

By only $2M. They're saying, though, after Sony reports the actual/official numbers tomorrow, it could be higher / they might every well manage to find that $2M in the couch cushions...

I wouldn't put it past Amy Pascal to do it herself just for the fk of it.

The combined surprises of Michael domestic and globally and obsession domestically was a hell of a boost….

But yeah, 4 billion (oops) dollar movies from one studio half way through the year is nuts…

Very curious to see if Brand New Day's box office will cause Beyond the Spider-Verse's box office to rise more than it potentially would have next June. Did everyone get their fill of Spider-Man this summer? Or is there now more of an appetite for even more Spider-Man next summer?

2018 - $395M global total = Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
2023 - $690M global total = Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
2027 - $????M global total = Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse

I honestly think it's more of just this is a beloved character that has had the crazy fortunate results of getting 4 different actors and series and all of them being excellent.

What other super hero can say they've had 11 movies and all of them being good (Toby 3 ignoring) to epically amazing?

The bitter truth of Marvel vs. DC right now. Spiderman 4 makes more in a weekend than Superman made last year in its entire run in a pretty weak summer of movies.

From Matt Belloni's newsletter tonight...

Quote:

Here's a wild stat: The $932 million that Brand New Day earned on opening weekend is more than the total worldwide gross for Sony Pictures' entire slate for this year and last year combined. It's true. That's mainly a testament to Sony's rough run lately (and reduced output - only about a dozen wide releases in that 18-month span, not counting Sony Classics), but it also shows just how valuable the Spider-Man franchise is to the company's L.A. studio operation.

Looking forward to seeing how the legs on 2nd weekend compares to Endgame. Endgame had a 59% drop from its opening weekend which is sick considering how friggin high opening weekend was.

Checked projections and currently it's showing 142 - 160 million for 2nd weekend as an average but depending on a direct source that number will move. If it does 150 million or more it'll break the record for largest 2nd weekend ever domestically.

We all now know just how off the initial projections were for opening weekend so let's see if this thing strikes lightening in a bottle twice!
