Stuck seeing Spider Man in 3D with glasses (which I do not prefer) because that's all that was available (and barely available at that). And that's an order 2 weeks from opening day.

This movie is gonna make so much coin.

Dang. That's still a thing?

Apparently?

It has to have been at least 10 years since I've done it.

But it was that, or row 1 or 2, which was a worse option.

Practical Magic 2? Wasn't the first one kind of a bust considering the star power at the time? I guess it built a cult following I am unaware of over the past 30 years?

Curious…who can explain why some international markets have delayed openings….

For the odyssey, these 3 major international markets haven't actually started showing the movie yet:

South Korea: August 5th

China: August 14th

Japan: September 11th

Why is that and is this common? Can't say it's something I've personally come across a lot of course could've also easily missed. Is it due to issues with the film and having to edit for that market? Competitive market in that specific country?

I will say I'm assuming Marvel and Sony are happy with that because it means IMAX theaters in those countries will get Spider-Man for a bit before the odyssey takes over.

This also means we're gonna see some untypical spikes in the international box office for this thing over the next 8 weeks….

It's usually due to a local holiday season or sporting events we're not familair with, or to avoid competition with big/local theatrical releases (made in their respective countries, which often take priority). There are also dozens of other more minor reasons having to do with dubbing, piracy issues, certain distribution laws, etc. No idea which apply in these specific instances, though.

Michael now guaranteed to do a billion as well, while The Super Mario Galaxy Movie crossed a billion earlier this month.

Which will make for three billion-dollar-grossers in the first half of 2026.

Then, next month could MAYBE see three more...

- Minions and Monsters
- The Odyssey
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day

After that?

- Avengers: Doomsday if Marvel actually delivers?
- Dune: Part Three if it's really, really good?

The record for most billion-dollar-grossers in a single year is SEVEN in 2019. We're going to be cutting it close, but the fact that the record is even in play this year is pretty incredible.

Michael's got 23 million to go but man is it just inching along now….i gotta expect they fight to keep it in theaters to hit that billion mark but it's gonna be close.

I do truly expect TS 5 to hit a billion. Hell at the rate it's going it could hit it before Michael….

Brand New Day is assuredly hitting a billion….would be a massive shock if it didn't (and a cause for major concerns with Marvel about Doomsday)….

Minions and Odyssey though….man….not too sure on those crossing that mark….

Dune 3 is another ??????. It'll do great don't get me wrong….but part 1 did 410m worldwide and part 2 did 750ish-m worldwide….its got the IMAX edge but not sure it hits a billion….

But I think Doomsday is screwed if they don't move the release date….honestly if they don't move it unless this thing is up there with Infinity War (which it could be) I expect Dune 3 to beat it in the box office worldwide….which would be really nuts

Nearly 100% on
Mario - DONE
TS5 - Gonna happen
Michael - little engine that could and likely could
Brand New Day - it dang well better

Cautiosly Optimistic on…
Dune 3

Think it'll be an uphill battle in order
The Odyssey
Doomsday
Minions (I just don't expect this one to move the needle)

Agreed on how the year has turned out there….its cause if films like this was anticipating the domestic box office coming close to if not exceeding 2023….

Update:

Billion Hit
Mario 2
Toy Story 5
Michael

Fully Expect to Hit
The Odyssey
Brand New Day (Pacing is insane)

Will NOT Hit
Minions & Monsters

So that's pretty much 5 guaranteed to make it and 1 guaranteed to miss

What's left: Doomsday and Dune 3

My new measuring stick for Doomsday is going to actually be the turnout for the re-release of Endgame coming up in the Fall. Remember the massive fan turnout for Revenge of the Sith?

Let's see how this compares....if it's strong then I think the support looks good for Doomsday to move.

Still don't see 10 billion happening. And not because movies aren't doing well...it's because the volume of releases simply isn't there yet.

I count approximately 143 theatrical releases between now and the end of the year...so round it up to 150 (this includes re-releases). We are currently at 437 theatrical releases YTD....so roughly in the high 500s so let's round it up to 600.

Will it likely be above 600 theatrical releases? Very likely. But here's my point:

2025: $8.6 billion / 670 releases / $12.8 million average
2024: $8.5 billion / 677 releases / $12.9 million average
2023: $8.9 billion / 593 releases / $12.6 million average
2022: $7.3 billion / 502 releases / $15.0 million average

Now....let's go pre-covid, pre-streaming, pre-inflation, etc....

2019: $11.3 billion / 910 releases / $12.4 million average
2018: $11.8 billion / 993 releases / $11.9 million average
2017: $11.1 billion / 854 releases / $12.9 million average

Skip to where we first crossed to 10 billion...

2009: $10.6 billion / 646 releases / $16.4 million average
2010: $10.5 billion / 651 releases / $16.2 million average
2011: $10.2 billion / 731 releases / $13.9 million average

We are currently at an average of $12.9 million YTD. Yes it's going to continue to go up over the remainder of the Summer, and then it'll go down mid August - October.

The numbers just don't support it yet...we either need an average per theatrical release roughly of $16 million or we need to get up to well over 750 - 800 movie releases per year and we just don't have those numbers.

I hold that this will be a massive box office revenue year...easily the best we've had since 2019 and should definitely clear over 9 billion domestically...but if I were to bet money on it I'd bet quite a bit on it being under $10 billion.

But for the sake of the theaters...hopefully I'm wrong!

I haven't combed through all of the recent posts, but is $1.5 billion a likely finishing point for The Odyssey?

But how many of those years had a potential $800million movie in December?

December alone could be 1.5billion with Doomsday, Dune, and other holiday releases.

Correct. It could. But bare in mind for December of 2025 total revenue was 964 million and for 2024 it was 985 million. Gotta factor in prior performance combined with overall performance.

So sure December COULD do 1.5 billion with both of those movies releasing on December 18th, but that's roughly only 500 million more than prior years for December in years where we couldn't even top 9 billion.

But since we've never had a December where we did 1.5 billion, it's difficult to depend on that number since there's no prior performance to back it up. The highest grossing December month of all time was in 2017 with 1.325 billion which included: The Last Jedi, Jumanji 2, and Coco leftovers.

2nd highest December was 2015 which did 1.3 billion which included: The Force Awakens

3rd highest December was 2016 which did 1.2 billion which included: Rogue One, Sing, and Moana leftovers

Big hills to climb!

dude who knows! the legs on this thing are nasty (in a good way)!

we still have massive foreign markets that haven't even started showing the film yet....last i read was anticipating 1.3 billion worldwide but who the hell knows at this point....im definitely taking the over on the 1.3 billion worldwide...

just enjoy the ride with this one it's fascinating to watch....

a 28% drop on domestic revenue after crushing opening weekend expectations??? this thing beat openheimers opening weekend on its 2nd weekend...

thing keeps blowing my mind and i cant wait to see where it finishes....

I don't think you're appreciating how rare and unprecedented this December is going to be. Avengers: Doomsday + Dune: Part Three will almost assuredly, together, surpass The Force Awakens. Throw in Jumanji: Open World, The Angry Birds Movie 3, Werwulf, Mr. Irrelevant, etc, and it's going to be insane.

Just for fun…cause this one is crazy…Imma guess The Odyssey crosses a billion worldwide by August 6th, even with Brand New Day coming out this weekend.

Btw…this weekend domestically….fingers crossed for 500 million domestic weekend! And yes I'm well aware of inflation being a thing and if you adjust for it there's likely weekends that will compare…but it would be cool to see regardless.

Spidey's massive opening weekend + strong Odyssey legs + whatever leftovers remain….itll be a stretch and honestly more likely to be in the 450 - 480 million range….but 500 could still happen…

It's nuts. I was traveling and didn't plan ahead properly on getting 70mm tickets. I've been checking but it's impossible.

They have showings at 2:30 am, 7:45 am, 11:30 am, 3:15 pm, 7:00 pm and 10:45 pm. Every day. And they are all entirely sold out or seats in the very front row until Aug 20 (which is as far out as they have it scheduled).

I had to go see it at 2:30AM because that was the only times available and that was when they released tickets back in June.

So how does it work at these theaters going 24hr? Just this one screen is going? Rope off the rest of the property? They open full concessions and keep it staffed with high schoolers?
wangus12
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Its just the IMAX screen going as far as I could tell, although when I got there at 2AM there were definitely some midnight showings of other movies still going.

Concessions seemed to be just the basics. Cinemark usually will have quite a few options food wise, but at 2AM it was just popcorn and sodas. Definitely a skeleton crew. 1 person scanning tickets, 2 running concessions

How does the 60MM visitors stack up historically? The record revenue numbers don't seem as relevant now that every theater is some "premium screen" they can charge a bunch of extra money for.

They're calling opening Friday (and previews) at $168M for Spidey.

That's wild, as like 2 weeks ago this was $190M for the *weekend*. Sandbagging (as one does). Still, I'd have never guessed over $300M for the weekend, but I'd have been dead wrong.
