Just caught up, and ho-lee **** does this ****ing suck! Not even sure I'm watching the same Kenobi. Literally, early padawan Kenobi would kick this guys ass. So would OLD Alec Guinness Kenobi!

So, what the hell is the draw of this series, exactly?

Great thread from Pablo about Vader's fame/noteriety, or lack thereof.

Also comment from Phil.

So why/how does Reva know?

It's almost like he might change and develop in the second half of the series.

All I know is that they've mentioned his name twice now, in yearning fashion, and you don't do that unless you're going to pay it off.
And if they don't "pay it off", I predict 4+ pages of disappointment here.

So a normal Star Wars thread

They're obviously going to cover it. I suspect because she encountered him at the temple of sometime after.

Just watched it over the weekend as well. I'm not quite as harsh but I get the sentiment. Considering how Disney neutered Luke Skywalker, it's defintely disappointing that this was the story arc they chose for Obi-Wan.

Except for Obi-Wan, it actually makes sense considering his failure.

Story-wise, I don't know what else you guys were expecting. They had to take Obi-Wan down a peg or two in order to justify telling this story. He needed an arc and this was about all there was to do. I mean, he's been in exile for a decade. He was never going to be a badass again from the jump.

Personally, my gripe is more with the lackluster filmmaking and the *way* they're telling this particular story, not necessarily what the story is, if that makes sense.

It really does. The last we saw him, he was telling his best friend he failed as a mentor and watched him burn up. Now we see he's been unsuccessful in reaching qui-gon for 10 years, and can't convince a curmudgeon to let him train Luke. Dude is full of despair

You take any top level performer out of the game for 10 years & stick them on a desert planet cutting up giant beetles & they will be rusty upon return.

I'm hoping for a Rocky-esque (Thor-esque?) musical montage of Obi-Wan training to regain his edge:
*Standing on a rock cliff at sundown, training with the lightsaber
*Running up dunes with a Jawa on his back
*Bench Pressing a Krait dragon skull

and the finale:

*Using the force to lift up a Bantha while one of the sandpeople is riding it. The Ghost of Qui-Gon is there, he & Obi-Wan begin laughing at this point as the montage music closes & they know "he's back!"

Exactly. His arc in this series is storytelling 101....he's had a huge defeat and now he has to find his inspiration for getting back up before he redeems himself and triumphs.

The problem isn't the story. The problem is everyone but Obiwon - the bad visuals, bad acting, bad dialogue, bad plot devices.

A page from the script just leaked online!

Obi-Wan Kenobi : I said why you doin' this?
Qui-Gon Jinn : Because you can't win, Obi-Wan! This guy will kill you to death inside of three lightsaber swings!
Obi-Wan Kenobi: You're dead, what do you know?
Qui-Gon Jinn : What else is new?
Obi-Wan Kenobi: He's just another Sith Lord.
Qui-Gon Jinn : No, he ain't just another Sith Lord! This guy is a wrecking machine! And he's hungry! Hell, you ain't been hungry since Mustafar.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: What are you talkin' about? I've won the Tatooine Over-40 All-Fighting Championship 10 times.
Qui-Gon Jinn : That was easy.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: What you mean, "easy"?
Qui-Gon Jinn : They was all Jawas!
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Setups?
Qui-Gon Jinn : Nah, they wasn't setups. They was good fighters, but they wasn't killers like this guy. He'll knock you to tomorrow, Obi-Wan!

You forgot the scene where Obiwan and Qui-gon are sprinting against the shores of the dune sea and high fiving when Obiwan beats him

Or does Obi-Wan go to Hoth to train - cutting logs, scaling hills, benchpressing Tauntauns. Then he climbs to the top of Mount Ison and shouts "VADERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!"

Eh, I'm pretty sure these creative types could have come up with plenty of other story arcs. He's already limited by what/when he can use the force based on the circumstances. It's redundant and IMO pointless to also make him a shadow of his former self.

But the series is still playing itself out so whatever... obviously he gets his mojo back at some point because this is not who we see in Ep IV. I would have just preferred them not to tear down another one of our childhood heroes again.

I'm really perplexed why people would think Obi-Wan would be anything BUT a shell of his former self 10 years into the exile.

He thinks he murdered his best friend/brother/apprentice.
Every single person he knows is dead, and the few who aren't, it's too dangerous to contact them.
The guy taking care of the baby left in his charge wants nothing to do with him.
He's living in the toilet bowl of the galaxy.
He's not using the Force to protect himself and Luke. The thing that nurtures a Jedi in their darkest hours.
He was around Palpatine hundreds, maybe even thousands of times, and never figured out that he was not only a Sith Lord, but manipulating Anakin to the Dark Side right under his nose.
And he lives in a cave and has no friends beyond a Jawa who rips off his stuff and sells it back to him.

What else could he be than what he is?

I just would have liked to have been in the room when they pitched this…

"Hey guys! Ewen is IN! What should we do?"

Young Disney exec (presumably sitting under a huge framed New Hope poster) : " I've got it! Kenobi is a hermit on tatooine, keeping his head down and keeping an eye on Luke. Then an urgent message comes in that he's got to help Princess Leia. So he's got to get off world for an adventure. Oh and Vader kicks his ass"

Other suits quietly nod in agreement.

I assume this is the same crack creative team that thought "what we really need is a young Han Solo movie. You know when he was a young, cocky, brash space pilot. We've never shown that to the fans before! "

Same thought when Vader just shrugs his shoulders and walks away from Obi-Wan when he could have just walked around the fire to get him.
Vader had literally put the fire out with the force a few seconds prior. He could put it out again. He could also just force lift obi wan thru or over it. If he can tele-choke someone over coms, he can lift someone over a fire (though maybe he doesn't learn to tele-choke until later )

If it was, we better be getting ready to see a flashback of how he came up with the name "Ben".

Exactly. I never in a million years would have thought THIS* would be the complaint. Ha, I mean, it's the core conceit of the concept.

*Then again, it's Star Wars and this is a message board, so I guess anything's possible, but still.

It boils down to this. Most people want to see Obi Wan kick ass. Human nature wants to see our heroes do wonderous things. So far people haven't seen him do anything "wonderous"...just the opposite.

With today's miniscule attention span society, this series runs the risk of losing people due to it's pacing and plot choices.

I get the breaking down to build up storyline. It does make sense for this character. The previous sins of Disney Star Wars and the thematic choices being made in this series give some doubts that they can fully redeem Obi Wan in 140 minutes of screen time remaining.

The writers could have made that work by showing Vader having flashbacks of getting burned to bits & having him freak out a little bit because of all the fire. This delay would have given Obi Wan time to escape.

Instead it comes off as wft? Walk around the fire??

I think Vader wanted him to get away. Nothing about him being afraid of fire makes any sort of sense. He built a castle on top of an active volcano.
