But we have no idea how common a name Skywalker is - on Tatooine or anywhere in the galaxy.

If there's a great actor named Fred Smith in Hollywood and 10 years later another good actor named George Smith, our first thought isn't "they're related."

In the *same* household, though? I'm just saying, Shmi was probably relatively well known too, and to risk ANY talk at all of there suddenly being a new Skywalker on the farm is pretty reckless, after one was tragically murdered by Tusken raiders, and the other went on to be a famous Jedi war hero.

Anakin lived in the slave quarters of MOS ESPA

Luke lived on a moisture farm out past the Jundland Wastes near Tosche Station and Anchorhead.

They are easily 160 km apart, as you would know, if you hadn't blown off Outer Rim Geography to go and waste time with your friends.

You must really be feeling embarrassed right now.

Touche.

Or should I say... Tosche.

Why would two random slaves be known in Tatooine though?

I don't think little Ani was that well known outside of the people who attended the Boonta Eve podrace that year, in the same way a small college town might remember the star QB from 30 years ago when he won the Sugar Bowl.

Also, Anakin did become a Boogeyman of sorts among the Tuskens, but as far as I know they wouldn't have known his name.

There were a sh*t ton of people at that pod race. Pretty massive crowd. And a human kid winning the whole damn thing would have been a big deal. Jedi in the area would have been news as well. The same kid who inexplicably won the big-deal pod race, leaving with the Jedi the very next day, would have FOR SURE been talked about, and the name "Skywalker" no doubt would have gained som notoriety in that part of Tatooine. That "same* Skywalker - Shmi's kid who won the pod race/left with the Jedi - becoming a war hero a decade+ later *also* would have likely been a thing. Especially after people learned that Shmi had been murdered.

I'm just saying, the name "Skywalker" was already out there, likely carried some weight, and was for sure *already* associated with Owen & Beru. To mysteriously add ANOTHER Skywalker to that mix was ill-advised at best.

Then again, the name "Luke Lars" is so bad, maybe Owen, Beru, and Obi-Wan decided it was worth the risk.

It's almost like Ol' George didn't think all this through when he made the prequels.

And BTW, Anakin did visit the Lars moisture farm in Episode II. He knows it as the place his only relatives live. Absolutely horrific hiding place, just as it was in 2005.

Again, I just disagree. I doubt anyone even KNEW he left the planet, much less cared. He was just some rando slave kid.

Furthermore, nobody even knew there were Jedi around besides he and Shmi.

My theory for how Luke and Obi Wan remained anonymous is that 1) Tatooine was so remote and such a poor backwater that the Empire saw no reason to visit and 2) Vader hated his previous life on the planet (or felt traumatized) and looked for any excuse not to return. Of course, I'm not up on all the comics lore so this may be answered somewhere in canon.

I think so much of the name deal makes sense if you look at it in the lens of that initial release in 1977, or even 1980/1983 for that matter.

Ben Kenobi works just fine as a name because we see a huge and vast Tatooine in A New Hope. It's similar to that planet in Rogue One. People are spread way the F out and he is a hermit. That's it. Not a huge circle that he is likely interacting with.

Same goes for Luke Skywalker.

Now, once you bring in all of the backstory and filler stuff from new material in this new show, comics, etc., then things get more hairy to explain.

Part of the wonder and amazement of that original Star Wars is how the story was built up with both what was said and by what was left unsaid.

I can't rattle off backstories like some of you guys on here, but I like fun movies. As a casual Star Wars fan is this going to be worth watching without having seen the animated stories like Clone Wars or Mandalorian, ect? We have seen the movies, including Solo and Rogue One.

TC: Claims to have no time to pitch a Star Wars script, but time enough to debate attendance numbers at the Boonta Eve Classic in 32 BBY.

It's called procrastinating between pitch decks, one of which I'm absolutely dreading working on. How dare you mock such a delicate, creative process.

Now, let me throw my 2 cents in about the nerd debate that's been going on...

Anakin was a slave that won a big pod race...then disappeared. There might have been talk about it, and him, but probably after a few years of him never being in another race and just disappearing, it probably became a legend. Even his name could have been forgotten by many. It's not like anyone knew he left with a Jedi since Qui-Gon kept his identity secret.

It wasn't until many years later that Anakin went back to find his mom, and then he only talked to Watto. You think Watto went around telling people he used to own a slave that became a Jedi? The Hutts might have whacked him on the spot if they thought him knowing one could bring Jedi snooping around their business. Assuming he lived, he probably never cared about the name Skywalker again, until Jabba's barge blew up.

Move on to Anakin going to find the Lars home. Shmi became a Lars, and I doubt anyone cared about a slave enough to know what her last name was. Then we get, what, maybe 4 or 5 more years between Anakin's first visit and when Obi-Wan brings Luke back? So now we're looking at like 15 years since little Ani won a single pod race? Unless you are one of the true hardcore fans, can you name who won Daytona 500 fifteen years ago?

Now, how often do we think Owen takes Luke into town, knowing that anyone asking questions could be bad news? Anakin clearly didn't give 2 sh-ts about the Lars and probably never gave a 2nd thought to them until he's shooting down Leia's ship over Tatooine. Maybe some occasional chatter around Toshe station about a little boy named Skywalker on the Lars farm..."hey wasn't there a Skywalker that won Boonta Eve, once?" I doubt many travelers coming and going from Tatooine have enough small chatter around Imperial Outposts in the Galaxy for the name Skywalker to find it's way to Vader's helmet's audio receivers.

New character posters.

The irony is not lost that the woman who helps Obi-Wan and Leia is the GOT lover of Oberyn Martell, who helps Luke as Mando.

am I taking crazy pills? Ol' Georgie bear answered this succinctly and efficiently already as to why Vader wouldn't go to Tatooine:

I mean the real debate here is how Vader never figured out Luke Skywalker was his son between ANH and ESB, when he was the famous pilot who destroy the X-Wing and his name was Luke Skywalker. Not to mention the whole "the force is strong with this one" thing.

You'd think that would have clued him in.

It's possible he doesn't want to go back to Tatooine simply because it reminds him of his failure at saving his mother.

Anakin/Vader doesn't seem like the type that want to revisit their past sins.

Because of this guy can do it, seems like a lot of people could do it
