After the first 2 episodes, I truly did feel this was a big improvement. Surprised the general tone is so negative.

Here are the things I enjoyed:
  • Loved Leia's question on how it feels to use the Force. So intriguing. Thought Obi-Wan's answer was a nice touch.
  • Sister #3 performance was much improved. Helped that she had far less dialog, but I thought she did well with what she was given.
  • Ben saying how much Leia reminds him of Padme, without technically saying it.
  • Vader's arrival in the village, and Obi-Wan's reaction, played like a horror or monster movie. Reminded me of Jamie Lee hiding in the closet, looking through the shutters as Michael makes his way inevitably to her. Even as he pursues Ben in the open, like a true stalker, he slowly and menacingly walks you down. Never running.
  • Agree that Vader's voice was spot on. None of his lines felt immediately like ones which would vault into the pantheon, but a few have potential. "I am what you made me."
  • Enjoyed seeing Vader's Mustafar home and watching him in action in an open environment. He's always on a ship, in a base, or in something else artificial. Super fun to see him roaming in open air.
  • I liked the night-time visuals with only the blades and Vader's lights illuminating the action. Reminded me of something they tried in AotC with Anakin vs Dooku, which was cool then but all too brief.
  • The visuals of Vader through the flames… excellent.

Less good:
  • Totally agree on the music. More classic Williams. This shouldn't be hard.
  • Agree with the assumption Darth let him go at the end. As ANH Leia will say, "It's the only explanation." They needed to make that more explicit, and maybe they will as things progress. Otherwise, it's ridiculous to believe a few flames, identical to the fire he had just started himself, would concern Lord Vader. Clearly, he intends to torture Obi-Wan. Must assume he's decided it's no fun if it's "All too easy." Better to let him retreat now and start over when your old foe resembles something closer to the man you've dreamt of destroying. Of course, hell of a lot of irony there given 2 minutes earlier he was scolding, "You should have killed me when you had the chance."
  • The logistics of every chase in the series leave a lot to be desired, and I'm not only speaking of the now infamous Leia ones.

Overall, I had a great time with #3 and have hope again.

One thing I don't think I've seen people mention yet here regarding episode 3: what about that whole tunnel deal towards the end? The timing seemed off to me. I thought Tala was going to run into Reva for sure, next thing you know we see that she found Obi Wan and Vader real easy in the mining area. How did Tala get past Reva if she was backtracking, and how did Reva jump around Leia in the tunnels?

For both of those "jumps" to work, you have to assume some stuff off camera:
1) Tala left the tunnels somewhere else and then went and found Obi Wan from that point
2) Reva figured out why the tunnel was set up the way it was, and left that safe house and went to the hangar for lack of a better word to cut Leia off

Episode 3 was okay to me…I think better than episode 2 on first watch, but not propelling the show to lofty heights or anything.

Last week, most of us were pretty sure the Grand Inquisitor wasn't dead. This week...everyone is acting like he is. I can't figure out how they do that, knowing what we know about Rebels.

I'm in same boat. They toned down sassy pants Leia. Reva was certainly better. The rest was just pretty much ok. Definitely better the EP2. I was writing a super snarky review but deleted, what good would it do. Just seems like such a waste of an epic opportunity here.

Vader scenes were not good. The couple of minutes we got of Vader in R1 were 100x better than this.

My high point was Indira Varma. She makes everything better she is involved with, IMO.

Isn't the grand inquisitor a title rather than a singular person? Maybe Rebels inquisitor is a different person. He is skinnier in rebels, like the lightsaber blades .

Someone else already said it, but Vader's first few minutes planetside were pretty metal.
This was when I thought the episode was bad ass. I just completely rolled my eyes once they fought in some random field and Vader left for no apparent reason once the lady and the droid showed up.

I enjoyed the first two episodes, but #3 was not good
- After escaping a planet where the empire had closed the ports, they must escape a planet where the empire is closing the ports. Again? ok...
- once Vader showed up on planet, everything got really screwy.
Vader randomly force choking everyone was unearned and random. We know he's a badass mofo who kills anyone who fails him, but we never saw him walk around cloud city killing everyone who looked his way. Was he trying to draw out obi wan? Then say so. It just felt so nonsensical and unexplained. What's Vader's motive for just killing anyone he sees?
Obi Wan was hiding in a building that we've established has one door out to the street, which Vader was walking down. How did he get out of the building without Vader spotting and confronting him?
How did Reva then know to check that building? If "the force" is the answer, then show us that
We are shown a long tunnel with no side exits, but somehow the spy (Tala?) gets past Reva and out to Obi Wan. This obviously means there *were* side tunnels, but if that's the case, show us.
How does Reva know where the tunnel is leading and beat Leia to the exit?
How the heck is Vader's search thwarted by a wall of fire? Vader literally just extinguished the wall of fire with the force, but when Tala shoots her pistol and recreated it, Vader just stands there staring at the flames and let's the galaxy's slowest robot pick Obi Wan up and slowly walk him away? The wall of fire wasn't even that wide. Walk around it! What. The. Hell.
Why is Leia still in the show at all? The more time Obi Wan and Leia spend together with Vader and the inquisitors on their heels, the less the original Star Wars movies make sense. Is everyone going to suffer collective amnesia at the end of this show? Otherwise, you'd think Vader would say "damn, kidnapping Leia sure did bring Obi Wan out. I should look into that connection more. Maybe kill the Organa's til Obi Wan resurfaces again, maybe probe into where this adopted daughter that Obi Wan is risking everything for came from."
When Obi Wan is rescuing her and only Reva knows, it works because you can kill Reva and close that loop. When Reva told the inquisitors, it got shaky. Now that Vader and everyone knows, it's non-sensical.

It's not this hard to write good stories. How does Star Wars keep whiffing like this?
Thanks and gig'em

The tunnel stuff doesn't really bother me like it does some folks. It's a mining town on a mining planet, there's tunnels everywhere, that's fine. Reva knows they're obviously trying to leave the planet so she starts near the port and works her way back, finding the pilot, etc. That's all fine. It's not airtight or anything, but for Star Wars, it's fine.

I had this exact question and this episode felt fraught with plot devices, but I think this can somewhat be explained (even though it's still hard to believe). My thought is that Reva discovers the tunnel and assumes it leads to the port, so she leaves the tunnel and goes straight there. So when Tala gets to where Reva was, she has already left. Either that, or the tunnel has multiple exits, which the show definitely should have made known.

Of course, in order for Reva to make it to the port before Leia, who had a seemingly gigantic head start, means adults are somehow faster than 10 year-olds. Can't have it both ways, Star Wars!

I've been trying to figure out how we're going to get this to line up with the future.

I think I've decided that Vader is going to both lose to Obi Wan, and he'll have to think Obi Wan is dead at the end. It's the only way to make it make any sense at all.

If the thought was Reva could have been one of the kids shown at the beginning, could she have been one of the children who went through the tunnels previously and has a flash back after she sees something?

Nah, they didn't show that at all to make that kind of "oh I've been here before, I remember everything now" leap in my opinion.

But the writing definitely did trigger something in her emotionally. I think it's just adding up to her doing something redeeming at the end.

With Obi-Wan having identified another youngling's name on the wall, I took it as Reva had done something similar.

No, but I've seen enough Star Wars to know that if mining is involved there's going to be tunnels all over the place. Kessel, Lothal, etc.

Watched the confrontation again and figured out what annoyed me so much. The scene made it look like I have my tv set for motion smoothing... it reminded me of trying to watch a football game at my MIL's house. I assume they are trying to make it more chaotic, so we get how scared Kenobi feels but damn.

Also, if you don't have Vader start the initial fire, then you use fire minutes later as a legitimate escape. Perhaps Vader freaks out when the flames ignite. That could have made some sense!

Definitely liked this episode better than the first two. I think my main gripes have been well-enough covered by others (lack of an engaging SW score, weird plot jumps), but I actually kind of like the Obi is struggling a bit. The confrontation between Vader and him this episode established that Obi is rusty and an emotional wreck (he did just learn that his best friend who he thought he killed is actually alive and a Sith lord a few hours earlier). I'm sure something special will happen that awakens the Obi and makes him somewhat of a more even match later in the series. And it makes sense to me that Vader would be disappointed that this fight is going his way so easily - he's been dreaming of his revenge for 10 years and now all he gets is a tired old bum?

I honestly think if they just cleaned up some of the crappy looking shots (mostly during the foot chases), and had used John Williams' music, almost all of the complaints would vanish.

I feel like damn near everything is well done in the show (save for some plot contrivances, but what show doesn't have those), but it just never quite hits the next gear like you feel it will, and it's mostly due to those things. Which makes it all the more frustrating because they're easy fixes.

I don't know how this stuff doesn't get fixed after the first screening.

Ooh. Interesting.

I've been trying to figure out what the show does for the next two episodes, and I hadn't thought of that.

What I'm wondering is if Leia will figure in the next few episodes, or she'll just be held captive the whole time.

Obi-Wan said "Quinlan" which is Quinlan Vos, who was an adult Jedi Master during the Clone Wars. Reva just paused to look at the Jedi logo, which is more evidence of her being a Youngling. I doubt she ever escaped through the tunnels of that planet, before.

I cant figure it out. It is not possible to make **** this bad by lack of talent.

You had the greatest cinematic story and universe of all time backing them. Any idiot could make a decent show out of darth vader, kenobi, young leia.

The last few movies, this, even if you never saw any star wars movies, didnt know the plots or characters, and had a low iq and no talent or experience for story telling, you would have a hard time making something this bad. The only thing i can figure is they are killing the original star wars on purpose for some reason.

They told you in one of those **** movies - 'kill the past' or whatever that idiot said. Idiotic solo death, even worse mary poppins fade out, turn luke into a cow tit sucking *******, and then nonsensical luke 'poof', now deliberately turning kenobi into an anti hero idiot coward, i expect it has something to do with some 'woke' plan.

I'm with you on "how are they going to make this work." Vader would not stop searching for Obi-Wan if he knew he was still alive, after this. Also, how is Leia going to get out and get home? 3 episodes to smooth a lot of things out.

Im half joking, but only half. They clearly do have a political agenda. And they are clearly putting out garbage. And they are clearly making all the old heroes suck. How else do you explain that?

mandalorian was good; that, the end of clone wars, and rogue 1 (brilliant) are the only decent content in decades. But even in mandalorian their luke character was a complete *******/illogical idiot at the end, except he could chop up cheezy cartoon robots.

Trying to think of trailer shots that we haven't seen in the show yet, and the only one I can think of is Reva using her lightsaber to block a flurry of blaster shots while yelling "You can't win Obi-Wan!"

seems like everyone on this show is making a mountain out of a mole hill when obstacles are put in their way.

- when Kenobi runs from Reva and escapes aboard a slow freighter, Reva stands there and yells at the ship instead of trying to intercept it.
- when Kenobi is faced with what amounts to a parking gate, he shoots the controls instead of going around or over it.
- when Vader has Kenobi hurt, he doesn't force push that droid down or anything, he let's them escape and doesn't bother to walk around and keep chasing them.
