If this team wins a game by scoring less than 110 points this season I'll be surprised. Our offense has to be locked in to win games. We just don't have the personnel to play defense. I don't see it changing all year.

The Spurs are now embarking on a long trip to basketball hell (.400-.500).

I don't intend to take that journey with them. But I do say good on you for those who stay with them. You're a better fan than me.

I just can't stomach a game following a team that has virtually no connection with its past outside Patty Mills. I just can't.

Godspeed Spurs fans. Wish you well.

I'm pretty sure the coaching staff would disagree. Defense is partly personnel and partly execution. Personnel could get a boost when Walker and White return. Both guys have length and that is sorely lacking on the perimeter right now. Execution can do nothing but improve. You have all these new guys and a world class coaching staff.

For the first time in many years the Spurs will be trying to work out team chemistry without key veteran leadership. It's going to take time.

And it could be worse. We could be the Rockets!

Cruz also sucks at basketball and roots for the Rockets.

Always nice to beat the lakers and lebron. Lakers only scored 18 in the 4th, did anyone watch? Was our defense competent? Either way it's sad that I'm excited we held a team to 106...

We played a little better on defense. The effort was there tonight. Luckily the Lakers aren't going to kill you from 3 which seems to be our weakness.

A team coached by Pop has the worst defensive rating in the league. Never thought I'd see the day.

New cast of characters still learning rotations is part of it, but we also don't have any capable of defending a guard right now. Murray and White would help here, but we have a bunch of guys that just aren't good defenders.

I pretty surprised that we are worst. There's a lot of bad defense going on. There is no way we are a worse defense than LAL or ARZ.

Not only that but the Spurs have played Portland with arguably the best backcourt combo in the league and Indiana with Oladipo playing at a high level. Their weaknesses are magnified against those teams. The Spurs are going to struggle against teams with guards who are prolific scorers until they get some help. The Lakers don't have high scoring guards so they matchup better.

1. Don Nelson 1,335
2. Lenny Wilkens 1,332
3. Jerry Sloan 1,221
4. Pat Riley 1,210
5. Pop 1,200

Pop will definitely be third in wins this season.

What's probably even more impressive is that Pop is the first coach to win 1,200 games with one team.

I was at the game on Saturday. I agree though I would say for the most part the D was a little better only in the second half.

It amazes me how much lack of discipline was displayed in the first half on defense. Guys sagging way off of shooters and losing track of their man, poor communication, bad switches - stuff you usually don't expect from the Spurs. You could see it in the box score where the Lakers were almost 60% from the field (just going off memory) and came back to earth in the second half as it seemed like the effort on D picked up and the guys got more locked in.

The crowd was really pretty bored overall with the game and there were a ton of Laker fans, but as soon as Pau hit that put back slam right before the buzzer to end the 3rd it lit up like a play off game. It ended up being a really fun 4th quarter from that standpoint.

Demar was really fun to watch work in person. Lebron is Lebron. A couple of times he was limping and slow to get up and the crowd was really laying into him about cramping - I thought it was pretty funny.

Offensively they are surprisingly better than I thought in spurts but it's a lot of iso ball and not as much beautiful game any more which felt really weird to watch from a Spurs team.

It will be a long season watching these guys figure each other out and see what rotations Pop settles on.

4-2 with the "worst defense in the league" is pretty okay. Get some guys back and give Pop some time to tighten things up, could be a less than horrible year?

Spurs are not the worst defense in the league

DeMar is announcing his presence with authority

With the terrible new rules there ain't a team that can play defense

The return of the dominant center and these bs fouls should change some things bUT the NBA will and has ignored that position on porpoise

Spurs press release:

The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they will retire Manu Ginobili's No. 20 jersey on Thursday, March 28 when the Silver and Black host the Cleveland Cavaliers at 7:30 p.m. CST. A special postgame ceremony honoring Ginobili will take place on the AT&T Center floor and will be broadcast live on FOX Sports Southwest and streamed live on FOX Sports GO.

Ginobili will become the ninth player in Spurs franchise history to have his number raised to the rafters, joining Bruce Bowen (12), Tim Duncan (21), Sean Elliott (32), George Gervin (44), Avery Johnson (6), Johnny Moore (00), David Robinson (50) and James Silas (13).

In 16 seasons with the Spurs, Ginobili captured four NBA championships while posting a career winning percentage of .721 (762-295), which is the best winning percentage in NBA history among players who have appeared in at least 1,000 games.

Selected by San Antonio with the 57th overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft, Ginobili appeared in 1,057 career games, averaging 13.3 points, 3.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.32 steals in 25.4 minutes. He is the Spurs all-time leader in three-pointers made (1,495) and steals (1,392), while ranking third in games played (1,057), fourth in assists (4,001), fourth in free throws made (3,380) and fifth in points (14,043). Ginobili was named to the All-NBA Third Team in both 2008 and 2011 and was a two-time All-Star (2005 and 2011). The 2008 NBA Sixth Man of the Year is the first sixth man, as well as the first South American, to earn All-NBA honors.

Ginobili and LeBron James are the only two players in NBA postseason history with at least 3,000 points and 300 three-pointers in the playoffs. Ginobili appeared in 218 career playoff games, averaging 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.34 steals in 27.9 minutes. One of 10 players ever to appear in over 200 playoff games, he came off the bench 165 times and is the all-time leader in NBA postseason history as a reserve in points (2,014), assists (576), rebounds (635), steals (205), field goals made (630), three-pointers made (226) and free throws made (528). Ginobili and Tony Parker combined to record 132 playoff wins together, which are the most victories by any teammates in postseason history.

After signing with the Spurs in the summer of 2002, Ginobili became one of just seven players in NBA history to spend his entire career with one team while playing at least 16 seasons, along with Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, John Havlicek, Reggie Miller, Dirk Nowitzki and John Stockton. He is the first South American and just the second player drafted in the second round or later to appear in at least 1,000 games with one team.

Ginobili is one of only two players in history, along with Bill Bradley, to win a EuroLeague title, an NBA championship and an Olympic gold medal.
