Rhino horn is worth more by weight than platinum, gold or cocaine. Was in a camp with another hunter who shot a rhino and the horn was removed immediately after photos and carried back to camp for locked storage before the field dressing had begun and word of mouth of it could travel around locally. Outfitter said he was afraid of armed poachers taking it from the skinners before they had finished. That was in 1994 and the horn prices keep going up.

When I shot the Rhino, the Game Warden took a blood sample for DNA. Also, horns were cut off in the field and escorted back with us to camp by the APU. The Horn was then drilled in the base and samples taken again for DNA. Then Microchips we're inserted. Before I could do this hunt I had to get US and SA approval that it was for my trophy room and I was not going to sell it in any form. The samples and chips are to ensure if it turns up somewhere, authorities will know where it came from.

Yes, an Irish Elk and a wooly mammoth. Antlers on the Elk were original pretty sure and the Mammoth I can not remember if original or molds of the original. I do not remember all the specifics, but the Elk they used several different types of animal hides combined to make the mount. I think the Mammoth may have been bear and buffalo hides.

This thread has brought me joy every single day for like a week now. OB is the best. Thanks again japantiger for sharing everything this far.

A buddy of mine's dad has a house in the country with mounts of all kinds animals he has killed. Before this thread and some of the "mount room" pics, I thought he had covered a lot of stuff in North America and quite a bit of African stuff. He had given up rifle shooting at some point because it was not really challenging, and collected much of the animals with a bow, and now "that was not getting challenging enough". I asked "what are you going to do now, drop out of a tree with a knife in your teeth and stab away?" He laughed, and said he was working on something. That was years ago. From what I have heard, he has not taken an animal since unless the shot was 1000+ yards.

FWIW, I use their range for sighting in my rifles. At 100 yards. The 1000 yard target is on a couple of small hills away.

FFFFFFF that is a long shot.

Went out yesterday for a couple hours to get the lay of the land. Saw 4 young bulls and some nice tracks coming off a close by water hole. Out early this morning to start the hunt in earnest.
