My biggest concern with Andor was whether they'd let it get dark enough, but after Moon Knight that's not as big of a concern for me.

Right there with you. It already looks to be the most competent by a mile.
I feel like these series just need a strong anchor like a Tony Gilroy or a Dave Filoni. I know you're not a big Mando guy, but just having someone involved that knows the canon inside and out, and knows what the fans want, would go a long way.

If you're not gonna have a Feige type running the whole show, I think you need one for each of the series.

Haven't read through the thread, did anyone bring up already that the most elite task force in the empire built their military installation underwater with glass that wasn't rated for combat?

That's a hell of a value engineer, that sales guy must have made bank.

The empire engineering/design bureaucracy being great at aesthetics but terrible at everything else is actually one of my favorite recurring bits.

"Hey, uh, I know it's a little late, but did we include the security checkpoint portal at the door?"

"What?"

"Yes, see it's here in the project requirements..."

"Hell... umm... just put it in the middle of the big room."

"Won't people just be able to like... walk around it?"

"Who's going to try to break security at this place? A jedi? lol they're all dead. It'll be fine."

What will be interesting is there are 12 episodes, plus season 2 has already been greenlit. This does give opportunities for multiple plot lines and character development that some of the other shows refused to do. But we shall see....

You can imagine the guys coming through Fortress Inquisitorius to patch up all the damage done by the events of Fallen Order and saying, "Just use the same stuff. What's the likelihood that'll happen again anytime soon?"

I've been thinking a lot about what might've gone wrong with this series, and at the end of the day I think Ian Malcolm said it best. They were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.

My understanding of the chain of events is, Lucasfilm had heard that Ewan McGregor was interested in returning as Obi-Wan. At that point, there was nothing planned, so they approached him and asked him to executive produce, and they starting writing it.

Then of course, the whole script was thrown out and re-written just weeks before the scheduled start of production.

That to me was a sign that the story never came first. It was just about bringing Ewan back because the fans wanted it, and the story was almost secondary to them.

Then they got Joby Harold to salvage what he could and come up with a new story, which is when they threw in Vader. Again, because it's something "the fans would want", but not because it would make for the best story. Basically trying to emulate what Filoni does, except with zero consideration to what the story would be. Thus, we're stuck with this story where episode three just feels like a cheap, half-hearted showdown between Obi-Wan and Vader that was thrown in for the sake of having Vader.

Long way to say, they put the cart before the horse. They figured the series would be a hit just based on the name Obi-Wan alone.

The more I think about what could've been, the more disheartened I get, because this character deserved so much more. I'm still enjoying a lot of what I'm seeing, but it's more so because I love the character of Obi-Wan than anything the show is doing right.

I dunno, I mean if you zoom out the story itself really isn't bad. TCTTS has said this a few times, but it's just the way they're telling it. Awful dialogue, weird set pieces, etc.

Vader facing Obi Wan and being disappointed that he's a shell of the man he's hated all these years is actually a pretty good idea, just the execution didn't land.

There's just some bad stuff in here that takes away from whatever weight would exist otherwise. Like him holding back the cracking glass with the force while Leia escapes, that could have looked cool but instead it looked absolutely stupid when we see the water coming after him, he runs through the doors, and then literally no water comes through after him and the doors close.

That's just bad movie-making.

The big plot points SOUND good in theory, in a story-by-committee kind of way, but almost none of them have landed for me. That should've been a great moment.

But the lackluster location, the generic music (which sounds like it's from a show that doesn't have the rights to the SW music), the less than stellar cinematography, and the occasionally shaky dialogue, haven't helped things at all.

I know I've hammered this home on this board on a couple threads, but it fits here so much. There needs to be someone watching these things whose only job is to go "is this fun to watch?"
The problem is that Star Wars, in particular, is nearly impossible to just focus on fun. If they just made a show that was fun, you'd still have a ton of people arguing how X decision contradicts Y decision from some other canonical show.

I thought this last episode was fun. But then I get on here and see people complaining that they got into the base too easily, blah blah blah. As if that isn't a very common movie and show trope.

Before the originally scheduled production, yeah. Then they halted production to do re-writes.

Here's the details from Wikipedia:

Quote:

Pre-production on the series was underway at Pinewood Studios in London by January 2020, and screen tests were taking place with potential actors opposite McGregor. By the end of the month, rumors began circulating that the series had been cancelled due to production problems. While this was not the case, the series was put on indefinite hold and the assembled crew was sent home. Kennedy was said to be unhappy with the series' scripts, which reportedly featured a storyline similar to the story of The Mandalorian, in which the title character protects "The Child", with Kenobi protecting a young Skywalker from various threats. Chow had shown these scripts to Favreau and Filoni, who expressed concern over the similarities to The Mandalorian and encouraged Chow and the series to "go bigger". Lucasfilm began looking for a new writer for the series to start over on the scripts, with Chow still expected to direct. Kennedy explained that they were hoping to have a "hopeful, uplifting story", and said executing that would be tricky given the state that Kenobi is in after Revenge of the Sith. She added, "You can't just wave the magic wand with any writer and arrive at a story that necessarily reflects what you want to feel". The goal was for pre-production to begin again in mid-2020 once the scripts had been rewritten. The series was also reportedly being reworked from six episodes to four, but McGregor said he did not believe this was the case. He added that Lucasfilm had decided to spend more time working on the scripts following the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), and filming had been postponed until January 2021, but he did not think this would impact the series' planned release schedule.

Joby Harold was hired to take over as writer from Amini in April 2020, and serve as showrunner. That October, filming was delayed until March 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At Disney's Investor Day event on December 10, Kennedy announced that the series was officially titled Obi-Wan Kenobi, and confirmed that Chow was directing. In February 2021, McGregor revealed that filming for the series would take place in Los Angeles rather than London and Boston, Lincolnshire, England, as had previously been reported. The series is executive-produced by Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Chow, McGregor, and Harold, and consists of six episodes.

Some people arguing, sure, but if it was fun to watch the complaints wouldn't be as loud. I think the Mandelorian is the perfect example. It has some pretty big issues, but it's still fun to watch. People like it.

This show is trying to be serious, and when you're trying to be a serious show, the details matter.

I do agree on this last episode being the most fun so far, and the nitpicks about infiltrating the base didn't really bug me. All of that to me feels like classic Star Wars.

There's still problems though, like knocking out Stormtroopers way too easily, and other little stuff like that.

Yeah, the heroes easily getting through a check point is like a classic Star Wars trope. The very first time it ever happens Obi Wan Kenobi just literally handwaves it away and says "these aren't the droids you're looking for."

Don't know if it's been said already, but I was hoping during the scene where Reva is questioning Leia that Leia was going to act like she was giving in but then tell her Kenobi was on some other planet (basically what Tala tried to do). I feel like that would have been a nice connection to ANH where she tries it again with Tarkin because 1) she would have had success with that trick in the past and 2) because Vader would have known she had done it in the past so they would have been looking for it.

The first time we went on Rise of the Resistance pre-pandemic when the Imperials have you lined up to go in the prison cell and start asking where our base is, I volunteered Dantooine and one of the cast members said, "Do we look stupid? We already checked there. We're not making that mistake again."

Yes but this was central to Obi WAN's character development. It was literally the first glimpse of the power of The Force. Up until then all Kenobi had done was scare off some sand people.
