She doesn't like Rhaenyra enough to be a kinslayer.

Edit to add: I feel like her support of Rhaenyra has more to do with her kind of vicariously living through another girl heir. Plus Corlys seems to be firmly camp Rhaenyra for his "grandsons"
book Rhaenys would have done it, if this had been an event in the book.

the throne was taken from her, both of her children, and she had thrown in with the Blacks. and now the other Princess was going to lose it.

She has nothing left to lose, and her husband is full on with Rheanera.

Also they've been pretty fuzzy on the timeline. Maybe intentionally so.

My understanding is that Viserys died the same night of the dinner, Rhaenyra and her family left for Dragonstone that same night, and most of this episode was the very next day.

So if the episode ended on the morning of the second day after his death, and Rhaenys is now flying to Dragonstone, she's gonna get there way before the others right? Unless of course all of them flew their dragons out to KL and back, but it's odd they didn't show us any of that.

it was 10 days in the book between death and announcement/,with the coronation shortly after

so yeah, this was a little gray on how many days (re:tv)

Since we're doing dumb questions, here's mine.

I didn't fully grasp why there was a race between Alicent and her father to find Aegon. Was it just that whoever "had" him would set the terms of his ascension and what to do with Rhaenyra?

Cause it seems to me right now Otto should not have power as Hand of the King. He would be outranked given that the King he served is dead, right?

it is a coup. Essentially a regency govt until the new king is installed.

Aegon did not know he was going to be king. He was in a brothel of sorts at the time that they recover him/bring his in. He even turns it down until he is told that Princess R will have him killed to ensure her children are the ones that later ascend the throne.

Huh. I'm guessing the show either shortened that or just didn't think it was important to show us, cause if it was a whole ten days I'm wondering why Rhaenys didn't get the hell out of there the second she could after the death of Vaemond.

i would have to go look, but I am pretty sure none of the stuff this episode with Rhaenys was from the book, it is all unique to the show.

I thought the morning and day after Viserys' death was spent finding Aegon and the next day was the coronation.

Some nerd calculated that you can get to Dragonstone in as little as 2.5 days.

So really we're fudging a matter of a day or two, not GoT level time warping

The music was fantastic this episode. Reminded me of the Light of the Seven that played in the S6 finale. (The wildfire explosion at the Sept.)

Djawadi killed it.

A little? Understatement of the thread…

Speaking of that discussion, what was his goal really there? Kill her father?

Yep, seeing that Lord (Carrick? Caron? Cargyle?) hanging in the Red Keep was her cue to nope the **** out of there.

No spoilers but pre-HotD lore follows:

I also think - if you read the history of the Targaryens pre HotD, they are relatively reluctant to kill one another, generally preferring imprisonment. Two exceptions are Visenya possibly poisoning Aenys (Jaehaerys' father) and Maegor the Cruel killing Prince Aegon the Uncrowned (Aenys' son, heir, and Jaehaerys' older brother). I believe up until this point that is the only kinslaying the Targaryens have committed. Could be wrong. They also have never used dragons on each other except for Maegor who killed his nephew Aegon with it. Maegor is unanimously considered to be in the top 3 worst Targaryen kings, an kinslayer, and his reign ended with his likely murder, so not exactly company you want to keep.

We may think it's dumb, but Rhaenys has valid reasons - to her - to not roast the entire Green family right now.

This particular scene is probably the most sensible out of all his kills because there is no one in that room aside from Harold Westerling who wanted to kill him, and Westerling seems to be kind of a chivalrous standard for knights.

So what's our Dragonrider lineup?

Greens:
Aegon
Haelena (?)
Aemond

Blacks:
Rhaenyra
Daemon
Jace
Luke
Rhaenys
Laena's twins (?)

Not sure about the ?s, but either way it seems the Blacks are stacked even though Greens have the biggest dragon.

Another question for those in the know: do all the Targaryen's/Velaryon's hold the Valyrian steel blades at this point, or have they been spread across the kingdom?

Like Jon Snow's sword, is it in the North yet with the Mormont's?

Ice is already with the Starks.

Longclaw already with the Mormonts

Blackfyre - Aegon 2

Dark Sister - Deamon

there are more of course.

The ending made no sense really, and when I read around, I guess in the book the coronation goes off clean. So they wanted to add a power moment to the end, but couldn't kill anyone up on the steps because it would wreck all the plot lines, so we got that. And wasn't the queen doing a bit more than showing her feet there at the next of that scene?
Olivia Cooke was amazing in that episode, but to have the most important episode without two of its main characters seemed wrong, as was people like the Cargylls suddenly becoming critical pieces out of nowhere.

Just felt like it could have been a lot better.

I think that is the implication. Also Larys doesn't want a 2nd spymaster in the capital
