My only beef with the way that character was this episode was the "heir for a day" part could have been better.

Would have been good if he didn't really want to give a speech, but his boys kind of hyped him up into it and then he instantly regretted saying the "heir for a day" line. As it was, it kind of seemed like he cared about his family in one scene, but then didn't at all in the next.
Lets just point out, we never actually saw him say it. thats what was reported to King Viserys by Otto and his "sources", but we never actually saw it. Now Daemon didnt dispute it, but neither did he confirm he said it either. i think we were meant to wonder if he did and im sure it will come up again.
It was one of those situations where either answer was wrong, since Viserys was already pissed.

Still unknown in the books or am I mis-remembering?

He's on a boat with a midget chick and a pig right?
Yes that is correct for Tyrion's location in the books.

I thought he had just signed away most of the Lannister's wealth to the Second Sons in exchange for his freedom?

Yeah, that boat was the middle of aDwD... then they're slaves in the freakshow... then that slave owner dies and they join the mercenaries

Daemon doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who'd suffer a false accusation from anyone at any time.

But I could definitely see his having made that comment as a sort of sad lament, vs a "haha he only lived a day LOL" type of comment.

Yeah I didn't think about the tone aspect of it - that makes a lot of sense.

Or even one of his cronies actually said it but he still lifted his cup and drank in the toast anyway or something. We'll see how it plays out, but just thought that was a missed chance to make that character and the next interaction a little deeper.

I often wonder why shows are so insistent on making the audience guess about this sort of thing. He either said it or didn't. I'm not sure showing him say it (or saying something different) changes the interaction with his brother. "We all grieve in our own way..." Previous poster is correct that it doesn't matter what his he answered, no win situation.

Either we are to assume he said it because he didn't deny, or they plan to revisit it later. I kind of doubt the latter option as I don't think it affects the rest of the plot.

Seriously. Westworld sort of filled that role but not nearly to this level. And BCS was Mondays.

Hyped for episode 2.

Well introducing a literal child as a candidate for the next queen sure was a quick way to make Alicent a FAR less creepy choice than it seemed an episode ago.

I agree with everyone that this just feels good. Being excited for a Sunday night show, the intro theme, the tension being built, etc.

I am nervous to see how the more significant time jumps go since the "fast travel" was a problem for GoT, but this is more out of necessity than the show runners wanting to speed the story along for their own reasons.

One does not jump into a civil war with no background story.

Rhaenyra is pretty headstrong.

Yeah this is really solid.
I will again say I feel a BCS/BB comparison is fair, they have gone for character development over bang bang. But looks like that may change next week.
Any idea why they had Alicent in the same dress the whole episode?

Have to admit... the opening credit scene got me pumped.

It has definitely been good so far, and it was cool to see Rhaenyra showing up on her dragon. That confrontation between her and her uncle made this story more interesting. He obviously doesn't seem to be willing to kill her at this point. That adds a lot of potential for future storytelling.

But, let's be honest, it will all come down to how they land the dismount, at the end of the season or series.

Also, all the characters have been fine so far. However, not one character has quite hit that level that we got with Tyrion, Ned, Daenerys, Arya, Jon, or even Robert from Season 1 of GoT. They were all better than any character we have seen, so far. I mean, we are obviously supposed to be cheering for Rhaenyra, but I haven't come to a point where I really love her character.

If you are going to build a series with longevity, you can only rely on nostalgia from a previous series, cool visuals, or even a decent story for so long. Characters are what drive TV series over the years. At least, that's my opinion based on any show I have ever loved or watched for years. I can forgive dips in story or plot as long as I love the characters.

VERY interested in seeing what happens to the Valyreon family between now and GoT where they are never mentioned.

To be fair we're only two episodes in. By that point in GoT the only character we really liked was Ned. Not even Tyrion had shown much likability quite yet outside of slapping Joffrey.

Hell... that was enough to get me to like him.

But even getting a single character like Ned is still an accomplishment. I don't think it's "fair" to say we shouldn't expect a great character after 2 hours of media. Movies do it all the time in that time frame, and many times less.

Edit: That's not to say they can't do it. I'm saying they haven't done it yet.
