I would rather they make PKs only when the handball is done for purpose of stopping a shot in the box and incidental touches being something less severe (like a corner or a free kick from outside the box or something). But the Premier League implementation is bad because it's so hard to judge. But if PKs are only for the more egregious handballs at least that's more consistent; in the Premier League handball calls are so inconsistent right now that it is frustrating.

We have to get better at defending after we get a goal; this is an amazingly poor trend.

Try not to concede a goal within 3 minutes of scoring a goal challenge [impossible]

Man, I am absolutely falling in love with Onana after his post game comments.

Been keeping only 1 eye on the game but I can tell you that Onana has had to make 2 good saves and watch a shot go off the inside of his post. We're up 1-0 but it's a pretty even game.

Only 2 good things about that game.

We won.

And Hannibal Mejbri seems like he's ready for more EPL time.

OK 3, because Bruno's goal was stupidly good.

But that was a very even game. Against Burnley. Who actually out possessed us 60/40.

Take the win and move on. I think we had 3 of our starters out there today? (4 with keeper).

Crazy lineup so take the points and move on.

This was a tough watch. The only thing that mattered was getting the three points. You could make a solid case that the injured/unavailable 11 are better than today's starting 11. I've become a huge ten Hag fanboy, but I feel like this is the hardest job in the Premier League right now and I really hope he can weather the storm.

I actually wonder if Maguire is really injured or not. Given that everyone is injured, it wouldn't be that surprising, but… kind of funny how this week's dressing room leaks painted people starting ahead of Maguire and the person who replaced him as captain in a negative light. That said, I'm admittedly not a fan of his, so it takes very little for me to blame Maguire. I'll admit bias. If he doesn't play at all until the next international break and is starting again for England, I think we will have the answer. It will be interesting to see if he plays in the league cup game.

What a goal by Bruno, though.

Same on both accounts. I actually think managing United might be an impossible job in its current state. It has all the negatives of being a big club with about only a 1/4 of the positives because horrible owners and a dysfunctional organization kneecap the other 3/4.

Yeah and I might should clarify that by toughest job in the Premier League I mean difficulty in meeting expectations, not just pure position in the table. Obviously on an absolute measurement, the objectively toughest job is probably Luton. But everyone more or less expects Luton to be relegated, so even though they are in the relegation zone, you could put any manager there and they would still be relegated. You could put Pep there and they would still probably be relegated. As far as obstacles to meeting general expectations, though, I think it has been toughest at United, so far at any rate.

Amrabat starts...at left back because Reguillon needs a break and we don't have anyone else. Poor Dalot is not afforded such luxuries.

Mount also starts...presumably in a more familiar role as an attacking mid as Bruno moves to the bench (!).

Hannibal starts again...would love to see him string together two very good performances. He brings some qualities to that midfield that, thus far, no one else has brought.

2-0 at HT.

Better than Burnley. Far from amazing offensively but the middle 15 minutes were quite good. Palace are sitting very deep. Way too deep even for a team that should be sitting deep. They haven't even attempted a shot. Maguire snuffed out their only decent chance with a very good clearance.

Amrabat is freaking everywhere. Hannibal is proving to me that he can play at this level. He definitely has room for improvement but there's no reason why he should be loaned out again. He could/should get 15 EPL starts this season, IMO.

Agreed on Hannibal. We need him and he should be playing more and more. Get him in cup games, off the bench in EPL matches with the occasional start.

Palace look like they do not want another round of Carabao Cup.

Lindelof comes in at left defender allowing Amrabat to move up, and taking off Mount. Hopefully Mount coming off is a "you have played a good 45 and need you for the weekend" type of takeoff.

You should either try and win the Gummy Bear cup from the first whistle or bail out the first match you have. Trying half way is a waste.

And to be candid I have no issue with big clubs with congested fixture lists bailing the first chance they get.

Almost certain Mount coming off was a planned sub. Surprised to see Lindelof at LB for a half but I guess ETH is looking for options there which makes sense.

I don't think there's anything wrong with going "half way" in the Carabao as long as it's under your terms. This game has given them an opportunity to get Mount 45 minutes of meaningful playing time after a long layoff, Amrabat and Lindelof time at LB in a low risk situation. Amrabat's first meaningful time with the first team. It's not a bad thing if they advance while doing that.

3-0, nice finish for Martial, allows United to completely empty the bench.

Comfortable win, lots of younger players got time and looked decent. Now watch us lose to these mugs this weekend

I'm sure their first team will give us a much sterner test on Saturday but a pretty good performance when you haven't had many recently is a very nice thing.

If Hannibal has proven that he can be of use this season in the league, I'm not sure Pellistri has. Though to be fair, other than tonight, the Bayern game is the only meaningful playing time he has had. The roster situation being what it is, he'll probably get more opportunities and maybe impress but so far, I don't think he gets minutes if there were other options at RW. Would be really nice to see Diallo back fit to see what he could do with the opportunity.

Anyone else Google to make sure the Dean Henderson transfer was a permanent sale in the first half? I thought I knew the answer, but… whew. Thank goodness we didn't do the loan deal to Forest! Take that Crystal Palace money and run!

Newcastle United at home in the 4th round of the Carabao. My guess is Newcastle will go for this trophy especially after knocking out City at home. Would expect a strong team from them.

Sevilla were interested in Hannibal on loan but ETH said no. He wanted to keep him around the first team. Hannibal's contract runs out at the end of this season though the club have an option for an additional year. Sounds like both sides want to agree to a new contract but likely won't happen till sometime towards the end of the season.

Before ETH, I think the last person to move from the youth/reserve teams to the first team and make an impact was Rashford 6-7 years ago. In ETH's first year Garnacho made the jump (squad player and not an outright starter but a first teamer nonetheless) and now Hannibal appears to be on his way to doing the same. If Diallo can get fit, the door is wide open for him to come in and show what he can do as an EPL right winger.

Hopefully this trend continues and Garnacho and Hannibal continue to improve. It's massively important on a number of different levels.

Mainoo was in a strong position to get first team minutes as well before he got hurt. (The injury bug this year really has been pretty crazy; even people we bought have been hurt before we even have a chance to mess them up ourselves).

Dan Gore might be getting some good minutes this season as well in our cup ties
Dre_00
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Mainoo was and I'm sure ETH feels he has a future at United. But where Diallo has watched his primary competition fall away while he's been injured, Mainoo has watched his position get more crowded with the arrival of Amrabat and the emergence of Hannibal.

Todays team news

Antony back with team
Lisandro out long term with foot injury
Regulon out for a couple games. No left back on roster who is not injured.

Wow.

Guess that answers the question of how to get Amrabat and Mount on the field at the same time: get three left backs hurt and one right back, forcing you to use a midfielder there. Easy!

Btw I do agree that we have a bit of a log jam in the midfield, but we really really really should have taken the 30M (pounds! Not euros! Pounds!) for Mctominay in the summer. I know we started him twice. Unfortunately, he did not increase his market value much in those appearances I don't think. I bet we sell him for 15 in the winter or next summer because that's how we roll.
Dre_00
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah in hindsight that was not a good decision though I guess I understand it as a hedge against Hannibal's performances. There was some logic to keeping him but also seemed like the better logic was to sell.

It's actually getting absurd how many injuries teams are getting. It's not just United. Something has to change. The money men aren't going to scale back competitive fixtures. Top players who play for their national teams are getting exposed to 60+ games a year not including pre-season or national team training camps.

It'll be interesting how clubs manage this going forward but I think it's pretty obvious that the wealthier clubs will manage it better than the others and it will increase the gap between the two. The most logical is to expand your roster so that you have at least two elite options in each field position and rotate. Sell each on 30 games a season and a longer career with less risk of injury. Players are going to have shift their expectations for their own good as well.
Mathguy64

Don't kid yourself. Top players in the EPL are exposed to close to 60 games in 8 months just in the EPL between league, gummi bear cup, FA cup and European football if your squad goes deep in those. I think we we at 57 or 58 matches last year.

Then add on international matches for the club. This last year with the WC, now Euro qualifiers and/or nations league plus friendlies plus summer money stealing matches for clubs and it could easily be 80 or more. That's a match every 4 plus days all year long. It's a recipe for physical disaster. And you can get hurt in any one of them taking you out of all of them.

86% possession after 15 minutes but I don't think more than 30 seconds of it have been within the attacking third.
