Grand Isle: Jefferson Parish says 28 people have chosen to stay on the island as Ida nears. The only road off the island is already flooding. pic.twitter.com/GmRBqSAgcb

I think this basically describes humanity perfectly.sts7049 said:

I desperately wish the forecast hadn’t become reality. Rapid intensification to cat 4 or 5 right before landfall is the hurricane scenario we’ve always dreaded the most. Shelter like you would for a tornado! #Ida pic.twitter.com/ZHqfIno56h

#Ida is the furthest north hurricane on record in the Atlantic to deepen 50mb in 24 hours or less. pic.twitter.com/qAVY87HLSx

Latest dropsonde reading ~160 mph in the NE eye wall. These are instantaneous readings, so sustained winds are likely a bit below that. Either way, #Ida is full-on beast mode. 💨 pic.twitter.com/vJXFkVL1S7
These are estimated Wave Heights in the Gulf of Mexico. Grand Isle, LA already seeing significant water. Worst still offshore for now. Higher waves along MS, AL, and FL coasts also. #Hurricane_Ida @Jeff_Piotrowski pic.twitter.com/5wS7nUiY7s

The 👁️ of this beast and its roiling, supercharged eyewall. Praying for the safety of everyone in the path of #Ida.🙏 pic.twitter.com/BFIUDW2jEE

Trying to keep storm chasers from camping out there.Cromagnum said:
So allegedly access to some parking garages in Houma was blocked off. I don't know what in the world people are thinking.
Port Fourchon (a large petroleum complex right along the coast west of Grand Isle) looks like it is going to take a direct hit from #Ida. This port is heavily used by offshore oil drillers… That’s not gonna be good for oil and gas prices.

I live on the north side of Angleton and we were in the mandatory evac zone for Ike. But one of my neighbors decided to ignore the order and ride it out. Several days later, while we were cleaning up debris, he admitted that staying was "the dumbest decision of my life." (Winds here on the "weak" side of the storm were up to 90 mph.)sts7049 said:
hell, i remember being at home in katy during Ike, and that experience of howling winds for hours was not pleasant. and we didn't even lose power.
i can't fathom anyone knowingly staying in a place guaranteed to flood.
I always wonder what goes through their minds as they make that call? Did they think the cops were kidding when they said "we are evacuating and you are on your own"? Oh now if I call them, they will come back and get me out? Darwin in action I guess...Cromagnum said:
Saw also where 28 people stayed in Grand Isle and now calls are coming in for rescues. Stilted homes are what, 8-10 foot high? Those homes are gonna be long gone.
