Suck it up nancies. Getting kicked in the nads a few times and being sore for 3 days is way better than popping out another kid. Plus there are a lot of benefits for your wife getting off the pill

Can't tell you how many couples in their 40s come through OB, thinking they were done - with the kids in college - before getting that last surprise and starting over with diapers.

I plan on calling to make an appointment very soon to take the plunge. I'm 31, have a son and a daughter and that's perfect for us. Plus having spent the last 4 years or so going care free due to try to have a kid, then wife being pregnant/pre fertile with the youngin then repeat for the second round I'm ready for that lifestyle all the time.

Get it done. Not too bad. Suck it up for a weekend. Go back for your checkup. Don't overthink this.

Depends on the doc. Some will do consult and procedure on the same day. Mine had them separate. Went for consult and then scheduled procedure. Ended up having to reschedule surgery because doc had emergency. Then you have to go back @ 6 weeks to make sure the chamber is clear before you get the all clear stamp.

Someone who has had vasectomy recently.. What was cost?

I recently had vasectomy and insurance was billed nearly $6000.
Is that right.. For a 10 minute pre consultant and a 15 minute procedure ?

I went in for a consult then went for the procedure a week later or something.

Then once you're healed up, you have your wife help you clear the pipes a couple dozen times. Then finally, you jack off into a cup, test it, send it in for confirmation, then you're good to go. At least that's what I remember.

How do most insurance cover these? Been thinking about taking the plunge in April, but haven't gotten around to calling the insurance yet.

My Doc's office researched my insurance and billed me for $110. Granted my insurance could come back for more later but that's what I had to pay.

I think my out of pocket was $100 but that's because I had cleared my deductible from knee surgery earlier that year. Not sure what it would've cost otherwise.

Had a scare this week. Wife was late about 4 days, and she made me take a test that we got off Amazon to see if I'm sterile or not.

Had mine done in January of this year. Obviously had not met my deductible and out of pocket portion was ~$700 if I recall correctly.

Funny this thread popped up bc I just had mine done a week ago from today. Since it's still fairly fresh in my mind I'll add my what to expect and tips.

Day of the surgery.
-My doctor prescribed me a valium to take an hour before the procedure to help calm my nerves. Now I'm not an overly anxious person and don't usually like taking that kind of stuff but since this was my nether regions getting operated on I took it and think it helped. If your doc offers the same, I'd do it.
-My doctor requested I shave the boys for cleanliness and what not. Take your time with this and use the squeeze aka "brain" method to get the skin tight whilst shaving. Use copious amounts of quality shaving cream and a good razor, preferably not the same one you use as your face.
-The procedure is really quick and fairly painless. I was in the same room I'd get a check up in. The worse part is the numbing shots. The first couple weren't bad, but the last one he did something different and it made me flinch. Once I was numbed up, I didn't feel anything besides some tugging. Hearing the snipping is a bit cringeworthy but overall not too bad. I didn't even get any stitches I think total it took under 30 minutes and I was a little surprised when the doctor told me to pull my pants up and check out. Also a lot of guys mentioned cauterizing the vas. I don't think this happened in my procedure and if it did, I didn't notice it.
-The funniest part is my doctor had me pull my pants down then put this sheet over me with a hole in it that the boys were then pulled through. Just imagine a flesh colored bean bag in the middle of a white floor. Maybe it was the valium but I thought this looked hilarious, like some kind of prank I'd play on my buddies.

Recovery
-I wore sweat pants to the surgery and brought my jock strap. Wear the jock strap.
-I was instructed to ice 20 minutes on/off for the rest of the day and take it easy. You'll be tempted to go do your normal thing, bc you're still numbed up, but I would not recommend this. I followed the doc's orders and iced the day of the surgery and a bunch the next day and I think it made the recovery go a lot better. I did go out to dinner with friends both the night of my surgery and the next night and don't think that hurt me in any way. I'm a busy body so sitting around is not easy for me, but I forced myself to sit down and ended up binge watching The Punisher.
-I was advised not to drink alcohol bc it thins your blood and could make the bruising worse. I did not listen to this and boozed it up the same night as my surgery and the next night... I got bruises and some pretty big ones so maybe don't do that.
-Guard the jewels. I have a toddler who is a pro at some how hitting me in the nuts. I had to be on guard at all times. Also realize you will have some swelling which will make them more susceptible to getting hit. Also watch out for the ultra thick jock strap band when you piss. Sleeping on my stomach was a no go for about 3 nights.
-My doc told me to wear a jock strap for a week. I wore it for the first 3 days but switched to compression shorts when I had to go back to work. Didn't like the feeling of my butt just hanging out.
-You can't pop one off for a minimum of a week. You may be tempted to do so, bc the feeling you'll have after a few days is similar to having blue balls. Apparently if you do decide to relieve yourself, it ends very bad and will set you back.
-I wasn't given any pain meds other than OTC ibuprofen or tylenol. Honestly that is more than enough to manage the pain and I didn't take anything after the second day. Possibly the worst comes around day 4 when you start to itch bc the hair on your sack is starting to grow back.

Probably going to depend on your doctor or insurance but out of pocket mine cost me $91. I'd hit my deductible already so that was 20% copay so I guess the total procedure was around $450 which seems reasonable for some local anesthetic and less than 30 minutes of a doctor's time.

This was my exact thought process while laying there. When I tell my battle story to my friends I refer to the sheet as a "D*** Blanket".

Blah....leaning towards making the leap this year....thinking April 2018 and leaning towards Dr. Mootha in Frisco. We have two amazing kids (boy and a girl) and we are just tapped out already. Love them to death but don't think i could go through it all again. I don't know how people can have 4+ kids. Wife had issues with her birth control so now its up to me....want to get it done in advance of our first summer vacation away from the kids.

It's easy stuff for any urologist, especially the ones that have practiced for a little while.

The only horror stories I've heard of were from patients that saw a PCP and not a specialist.
