Veteran QB that is a year removed from an all-pro type season with an all-pro caliber receiver. Elite players sprinkled throughout the roster. Injuries played a critical role in the results this season. If I'm an offensive minded coach, Dallas is a great candidate.

My thoughts exactly. Also, if you're Ben Johnson and you pretty much have your choice of teams, why would you pick the Cowboys?

Because he's an offensive coach and no team looking to hire him has a better combined QB/WR setup than Dallas will. The only one remotely comparable is Jacksonville and well, they're Jacksonville.

Not saying he'll come here but most teams looking to hire don't have a QB you can walk in and win with right away.

OK, I don't follow the NFL much at all aside from when the Cowboys are doing good (which hasn't been that often lately) and just watching the conference championships and the Superbowl.

Questions:

  • Did McCarthy basically just quit in this instance in lack of a contract extension?
  • Has Jerry ever had a coach quit on him?
  • How often do coaches actually quit if they don't have something at least lined up? It seems like most just get fired. Is this rare?

Man, if you think its bad with McCarthy, imagine the rage if they hire a guy who has only three winning seasons in ten years a HC. What a mess.

It's not quitting if they couldn't agree on contract terms.

You do have to acknowledge the elephant (JJ) which is what Spaceship is saying, Id imagine. Sometimes the most talented roster is not the best destination (in any profession). The question is, how does BJ balance that scale? What are his motivating factors? Will be interesting, that is certain.

Kingsbury checks a LOT of boxes: quarterback guru, Texan, good on TV, hurts the Skins, meek enough to work for Jerry.

I seriously doubt Ben Johnson would ever come to Dallas, with how picky he's been and the talk about finding the right situation in terms of owner/GM. Dallas is a **** show

Eh, feel like it's easier to find a new QB (as you mentioned, you can have success with guys like Baker or Darnold) than it is a FO that isn't a toxic **** show

We talked abut KK last night, not in regards to the Cowboys, but HC in general.

He ain't it. He wasn't it in college, he wasn't it at AZ. He's a great OC, but not. HC.

Someone on one of the "make fun of the sips" threads said that Sark's problem as the one that calls the plays is that an OC is in the box, planning for the next drives while the defense is on the field. The HC as OC has to also pay attention to what the defense is doing. It's pretty much documented, esp during his time at Tech, that he could not have cared less about the defense.

Kingsbury is a really good offensive mind who is much better in the film room than in leading men and creating a winning culture. He should be a nonstarter. Him being paired with Quinn is about the perfect pairing for KK's skillset.

I'd be much more interested in Ben Johnson in terms of offensive savants, but I don't know that a guy who's a highly sought after commodity will be enticed enough by Dak and Lamb to work for the Jones boys and the strings that come with that. He's winning big with Goff at QB, so he may think he can be successful without a top QB and be looking more at the organization, which outside of a solid personnel guy in McClay is likely perceived as problematic in Dallas.

Don't forget history of folding late in the season.

My sadly serious guesses:

Mike Zimmer
Prime
Kingsbury
Kellen Moore
Jason Witten

I'm setting myself up to be disappointed, but at least Prime would be entertaining. What are the odds that Jerry has a coordinator under contract before a HC this time?

Nearly all the best coaches in the game today are "clipboard coaches".
Nah, I want a chest bump players' coach like Tomlin, Carroll, Lafleur, DQ, Vrabel, McVay, Siriani, Demeco, etc. You absolutely know what I mean...simply holding a clipboard does not make one a "clipboard" coach.

McCarthy had already been sought after by at least one other team and he and his agent likely believe he'd be a fairly hot commodity.

McCarthy knew he'd be operating on essentially on a one-year "make good" basis if he returned to Dallas, and he's weighing that vs the possibility of longterm security and opportunity if he becomes a free agent.

I really don't blame either side for their stances, as I understand McCarthy wanting more security (which means not just money, but also opportunity for success) and Dallas for not being sold that McCarthy can maximize the offensive talent. I do fault the Cowboys a bit for the timing of it all.

That might be the all time worst list I've ever seen. My gut has been telling me its Moore for awhile now and I would hate that.

Vrabel would probably be the best realistic candidate from a team culture standpoint. I'd want to know who he would pick as OC before I'd celebrate it though.
