This is unnecessary and creepy. Paparazzi were awful in the first place when they were following Britney and Kanye, and now we have it at crime scenes?

Pretty disgusting, but obviously, they wouldn't be doing it if there was not a market for it.

He was talking about camera flashes inside the house, those would not be paparazzi.

Uh BadMoon was referring to the peeps filming from outside of the house! (IMO)

I don't understand the pace maker signal. From a basic research, there seems to be two types. One, that connects to a device inside the home and then to the internet and/or phone. Two, that connects directly to the phone via standard bluetooth.

I would think you could use systems to find a bluetooth signal similar to how tile finds lost items for type 2. Or at a minimum get the device in a van and drive around hoping to hit on the signal. Probably a long shot but you could start with the neighborhood or get with the company and get a ton of the devices to expand the search. There are a ton of volunteers that could assist.

Does the pacemaker communicate post-mortem? The concept of driving around looking for that bluetooth signal could be interesting. Just not sure the technical and practical details, but it should be possible.

It disconnected from her Fitbit at some time during the night of the attack.

Is there another source with which they communicate?

Harris Faulkner this morning is making a big deal out of the Pima County Sheriff attending the U of Arizona basketball game yesterday, saying it is bad optics for a man in charge of the investigation around Nancy Guthrie's disappearance.

Sorry, I think that is ridiculous. The man is not required to work 24 hours a day. She is not the only missing person. This is not the only crime happening in his county. He is allowed personal time off. And attending a basketball game for 2 1/2 hours on the weekend is not outrageous.

From what I've seen so far from the periphery, if I was the family I'd actually prefer if he was involved as little as possible going forward.

The press wants every detail released for their own use. They will do it under the guise of public safety or some foia kind of crap. They want views and clicks for their business reasons.

I am constantly impressed with the ability of the masses to solve complex issues. You put the data and information out there and within hours the general public will have all sorts of new leads and ideas. Some will be worthless but a few will figure out exactly what happened and who did it within a short period of time.

I wish we would use the masses more. For years, I have been saying that if all the Jan. 6th video was out there the general public probably would have id everyone and had their actions that day completely mapped out.

Yeah, I have no problem with Deputy Dawg spending some time away from the case, especially with all the other resources they have brought in. Some cases are too big for the locals. It is unfortunate that this is getting so much air time since Guthrie is one of their own. It's tragic, but the talking heads get to act all chummy and concerned.

I saw the clip of him at the game, and my initial thought was, Yeah , he's allowed time off, but I don't know if I would spend it under the spotlight at a college basketball game. Just bad optics. Watch it on TV at your house, man.

I think it's healthy for him to take a short break and think about something other than the case for a few hours. Also good for his 2nd in command to step up and get the experience.

The outcome of the case won't change one iota because he went to a basketball game.

It made me think of the Ted-Cruz-in-Cancun-during-the-snowpocalypse scandal.

There's nothing he can do, and probably better that he's not there, but the optics of it are terrible.

This type of thread seems ideal for a "thread summary" type of feature. While the mechanics could be challenging, it'd be really nice to be able to have a crowdsourced summary for emerging news type topics where catching up doesn't require reading dozens of pages of conjecture.

Best I can tell: shut-in but relatively healthy old lady went missing. Ransom note followed. Potential signs of entry/struggle. Investigation appears to be sloppy - also exploring foul play by those close to the lady. Whereabouts still unknown. National news because media dramatically elevates stories connected to themselves. That about where it stands?

I think the Cruz was different. The whole region was in crisis. For all the media attention, this is one criminal investigation with no indications that the rest of the county is in danger.

As bad as the Sheriff has botched up the securing oof a crime scene, procurement and preservation of forensic evidence, and the handling of the press, it did this investigation a favor for him to go to the basketball game and leave someone competent in charge.

If it was going to be paid why wait until the deadline today? Without knowing what was in the ransom notes it is difficult to assess but I would assume they gave the family the instructions on how to send the money. If I was convinced my loved one was still alive and had the money had the intention of paying the ransom I would do it right away.

I'm leaning towards the conclusion that some have stated that the family likely knows she is deceased and think that means they aren't going to pay $6 million for a body..

Reports have stated there are two ransom amounts that have been discussed, one for $1 million and another for $6 million which probably means there are multiple parties messaging them. Which one is legit if any?

They're DAMN FOOLS if they do. That woman is dead, and there's been no proof that these claimed abductors even actually have her body.

Per Fox, TMZ has said they see no transactions or funds in the bitcoin address they received. But some discussion on how quickly updates can be seen on publicly available data.

Understanding they may have more details than are public, but now over a week with your mother missing and all the pressure from the press and attention, has to be completely devastating and exhausting.

Then why haven't they already paid if they intend to do so? Why wait until the final hour if you think she is alive and want her back? That's why I question the legitimacy of the ransom notes

NBC almost has to. Particularly if this was targeted because of her position there.

Also going to be interesting to see what changes for security of not just the talent but key people around them.

We as a society have a tendency to overreact to very rare incidents. I expect that to happen here.

Here's another thing everyone best keep in mind. In the Arizona desert, human remains can transition to skeletonization in as little as 6-9 days. Factor in the varmints and insect activity and a body is gone pretty quick. Tucson area is in the 80's this time of year during the days and get down in the 50's at night. If she was dumped in the desert, there's nothing but bones left. Bodies don't last long in the brush.

Nearly impossible to put yourself in that position, but I would need proof of life beyond a doubt. How do you do that? I guess with some very pointed or obscure questions that only the family knows. This also potentially brings in more intel on the captors.

I sure don't want to pay for a corpse, but that's just my philosophy.

Not to get cutthroat, but as part of a publicly traded company, is that a legitimate use of company funds to pay ransom for somebody who is not an employee? Not objecting to their generosity to pay for it, but it does seem a bit questionable fiscally for a company with a fiduciary duty to it's investors.

Can you imagine the ratings if they pay to get her mother safe and back when she comes back on the show. I don't know what the ransom is but it could get pretty high and probably still be justified to investors.

Savannah Guthrie's employer is NBC, secondly they will write off the expense having her sign an exclusivity binder for the inside story and interviews.

If the network pays this ransom, you should write off journalists ever going to a war-torn region again. Seems like this would open up the floodgates.
