Weird. I assume everyone has a ring camera. So, if you're going to rob or kidnap someone and choose to walk up to their front door why not have a piece of cardboard over your face/chest or an opened umbrella pointing to the front door for concealment? Then you get parallel with the doorbell camera (against the wall) or reach out from under the concealment and put a piece of tape over the camera then rip if off the wall.

Hmmm. You seem to have this figured out and might become a suspect in other crimes!! The FBI my come visit you lol.

I have security cameras at my house and at both businesses. Not in every case, but in some cases over the years, I have had one quite visible camera and one pretty much hidden and it is/was at a different vantage point that the obvious camera has. The theory being if they are able to defeat the obvious camera (like you suggest by shielding your face or by destroying it) there is a good chance the other camera still got some pictures or video. The more hidden camera is also elevated such that it cannot be removed without a ladder.

As for the camera quesitons...

I think your basic Ring/Nest whatever is great for seeing who is at your front door when you answer or checking on a package that was left.

If you want security then you need eave mounted units that record either to the cloud (or better in my opinion) to a DVR system concealed somewhere inside the home. Getting them on a larger perimeter away from the the direct line of the front door can make them harder to notice and out of reach for tape or spray paint, etc. If they record to a DVR smashing or stealing them won't remove the data and cutting a phone line or internet won't cut the backup. Ultimately everything is about tradeoffs.

Most decent security systems these days have cell backup so cutting the phone line doesn't stop anything from being recorded.

Yep. Always have more than one covering an area. For rural properties, make one obvious and then have a second or third hidden somewhere with an overlapping view. When the trespasser goes to disable the obvious one, you get them on video from the other(s).

Did I hear that right? The first person Savannah called that day was Mark Kelly? Really? Not the police, but Mark Kelly?

Maybe she already knew that the local cops were incompetent and thought calling a U.S. Senator might help. She has likely interviewed Kelly and his wife several times over the years.

She was likely in a panic mode and called the senator because odds are he could, or his people could, get the ball rolling a lot faster than if she called the police, then had to deal with all the questions a dispatcher asks, etc. Kelly or his folks could probably contact people that more likely could be of immediate help without having to go through various layers within law enforcement. A call to the police would mean dealing with a dispatcher who would eventually pass the word to a police officer and then at some point he or she would take action. A senator or representative or governor is going to go straight to the top and bypass the underlings. Might not do any good, but that would be preferable than going through channels.

Patel explains why in the post. Those pics were obtained from the camera company and they had to comb through a crap ton of data to find the image. The cops had to wait on them to find it this wasn't the FBI techs taking their time.

If her sister was local and dealing with the local cops on scene, Savannah may have been trying to get the feds involved and may have though going through the senator as the best and quickest way to request fed involvement. Just because she may have known Bondi for many years doesn't mean she had her contact info handy on a Sunday morning.

That's something I don't get about Savannah Guthrie. She is relatively famous, regardless she had her mom on the show repeatedly then recently did a segment for the Today Show on where her mom lives.

For several thousand dollars she could have every inch of that property covered in cameras. And why did mom not have life alert type device?

Guthrie had access to many resources others do not have the best solutions. Maybe with her sister there it seemed unnecessary.

Cameras off a basic level of deterrence and whilst they may not ultimately prevent a crime, a properly configured system can help solve one rather quickly.

Yeah, my most recent cameras work using 4G connectivity, sends alerts to my phone, you can view what it is seeing real time, adjust the pan and tilt using my phone, and has a solar panel that keeps it always at 100% charged for $10 a month (over and above the cost of the camera of course, and they are under $200).

I mean, these kids talking about not being able to afford a home can spend the next week learning how to install security systems, skin their Teslas with an AI generated logo name and website, and off to the races.

Hell, even QuickBooks have embedded AI to keep their accounting straight.

Who needs security , just get a dog. Every one of mine would have taken care of this issue but the Labrador Retriever, who would have let him in and shown him where the dog treats were.

Based on the mom's health I think she's gone. The way I'd play this if I were the family is to come out and say "There has been no communication with the potential abductor. No proof of life. We will not pay a ransom. What we will pay is $500K for information leading to the arrest of this piece of sheet."

Even with all her resources sometimes Mom is still just Mom and "doesn't want to live in an armed camp under constant surveillance!" or something like that. If she was hiring people from south of the border to come work at her house, she was probably pretty oblivious to the real security threats involved in being conspicuously rich and/or famous too close to the border. Sometimes there is only so much a kid can do to talk to their parent about their own safety.

Based on that enhanced photo I agree it looks like a Hispanic dude and doesn't look like the BIL at all. I don't think Cartel kidnapping either otherwise they would be demanding the money from the beginning until they get paid. I bet this guy knows someone that has worked at that house whether a handyman, maid, or gardener and they told him about all of the goodies inside with just a little old lady living there by herself. Botched burglary attempt and very low chance Nancy is alive.

I think this is cartel and they ****ed up by roughing up an 84 year old woman with health issues. Accidentally killing her ****ed up the ransom approach, so it's been disjointed
