In one of the last shots of the episode, with Rhaenyra and her family on the wall/walkway thing to Dragonstone, I could have swore the newborn had white hair, implying that Laenor at least fathered that one.

I don't recall the final shot but when Alicent pulls back the swaddle, the camera centers on the whisps of Joffrey's clearly black hair.

This is still very much true after this episode. Probably even moreso.

He had a political fight with his cousin over the throne, his wife is dead because of him, his previous Hand was a schemer, his brother is a bonafide lunatic that killed his powerful noble wife and is really weird around his daughter, his son in law happens to be gay, so his daughter has 3 kids with a sidepiece... who happens to be the son of his new Hand... and also beat the **** out of his bodyguard... who's also unhinged and beat the **** out his son in laws boyfriend after sleeping with his daughter and getting rejected afterwards, his grandkids who happen to own their own dragons are starting to hate one another, his wife has long since become unceasingly complaining about his daughter, his chair keeps attacking him...

Anything I left out? Seriously, his health is all probably because of stress. Someone should prescribe him Prozac.

I went back and watched it on my phone just now. It's not the final shot, but part of the closing montage, before the final scene. And I'm 99% certain the baby has white dreads. It's weeks/months later and it's either white dreads or a white blanket wrapped around its head, but it looks like dreads to me. Can't screenshot because of DRM. Can anyone else confirm?

Very interesting dynamic developing.

We went from Alicent being an unwitting bad guy (a tool of a power hungry Hand) and Rhaenyra being on the good side, to Alicent seemingly being the good side. Sir Criston Cole thinks as much, as he knows the deal Rhaenyra tried to strike with him, and knows she is having illegitimate heirs to the iron thrown. At his core the man is honorable and loyal, and is trying to earn back his honor in his own mind. The fact that Alicent just had the Strong's scorched shifts her out of the side of good. Just took an interesting turn for sure.

I wondered why R didn't just dye her kids hair white. Surely they have that technology. Ancient Egyptians had that capability.

Disagree about Criston being honorable. Dude seems to be acting like an ex who can't help but hate what they used to have.

Did anyone else think they were watching Mike from Stranger Things cosplaying Prince Aegon?
He is David Tennant's son, so that's a 2nd tie in to Doctor Who.
and to full circle Targaryen it, David Tennants wife played his daughter on an episode of Doctor Who.

Ha, I finally watched it in my big TV again and I honestly can't tell. I'm not so sure. In one shot it definitely looks like dreads and in another it certainly looks like it could be a blanket or towel or cap.

Watched it one last time. Ok, definitely a blanket. Maybe pick a different color, though?

Was Alicent behind the burning as well or was that just Larys??

The baby is Harwin's. He says goodbye to it, she lets him hold it, Allicent says it looks nothing like Laenor, at no point does Rhaenyra even act like it's remotely possible it's Laenor's, etc.

For them to do all of that but then have the baby have white dreads in a closing shot would be some wild stuff.

I took that as intentional - the Targs wanting the baby to appear white haired so put a cap on it. Hell most of them look like wigs anyway.

I def agree that them not even caring enough to try and disguise the kids is some wild stuff.

All of the Targaryans AND Velayrons have white hair. This is just some real IDGAF stuff from Rhaenyra and Laenor.

Loved this episode. Vhagar was cool AF. I guess Daemon's "performance" issues was strictly related to disinterest in anyone but his relatives. So I guess that lends credence to the fact that he just decides not to go through with his desire of Rhaenyra vs an inability.

Aegon* jerking it out the same window tommen took a swan dive off of gave new meaning to "Kings Landing".

RIP Harwin.

It looks like we just got our new Cersei and Joffrey (also literally got a new Joffrey).

Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke are gonna kill this show.
LOL !

She wasn't behind it. I guess what she does from here on out will tell a lot about her honor and where she stands though. May as well be behind it if she benefits from it and does nothing about it. What would Ned Stark do?

This is a stray thought, but I guess I don't get why it matters that much if the kids aren't Laenor's.

The right to ascend the throne comes from Rhaenyra, and they're definitely her kids. If Laenor is willing to pretend the kids are his, why would anyone else really care? They aren't usurping power from some unwitting lord. I get that it's like a they-talk-about-it-behind-closed-doors kinda thing, but does it matter from a "grab the pitchforks" standpoint?

Like in GOT, Joffrey not being Robert's son matters because the right to inherit the throne comes from Robert, but that's not the case here.

Because the current king has a true born male son. Many in the realm don't care that he makes Rhaenyra his heir. Her kids being bast-rds makes it even more likely for the rest of the realm to back Aegon

It matters to Alicent. She will sow discord so that the first true born son of the king is the king.

I agree with "they were going to do that anyway." I suppose that's been the point all along. More fuel for the fire, now.

This would have been a great season 2 episode 1 and I could have easily enjoyed 5 more episodes in the old timeline with Laena and her dragon, Harwin and Larys rivalry, love triangle with Uncle Daemon and young niece/younger cousin, sea snake and his gay son, more dragon fights, etc. I get it that they wanted to just make it an extended prologue. Oh well it's still great.
bobinator

Yeah, theoretically that would matter, but how would they ever prove it if both the mother and the father are pretending they're not? It's not like when it's the father and the queen never gets pregnant.

I dunno, y'all are right that it matters in that it's another thing that could turn some people away, or further away, from Rhaenyra when the time comes.

I'm choosing to believe that this show believed so much in the core story that they felt all this backstory was absolutely necessary to make the show work.

This was basically a five episode "previously on" to set up where we are now. These next few episodes are going to be where we know if this show is any good or not.
Agreed, and in one episode they established the 3 potential claims for the crown and showed a good amount of political intrigue involving them.

They are also spread out about more in Westeros, instead of all clustered in one castle.
Also introduced the Triarchy and Dorne potentially allying together to be a new conflict to address.

The spread out thing is why I wish they'd do the old GOT-style opening. I could use a good map to open each episode.

Totally agree. I didn't care as much about Harwin dying because I never got to know him. Same with Laena. Really wish we could have had more back story there so her death was more impactful. (Did she commit suicide because she thought Daemon was going to pull a Viserys and trade her life for the baby's - or was it more of a I'd rather go out like a dragon rider than by giving birth?)

Also, would have loved to have seen how Laena claimed Vhagar - that would have been pretty cool I think.
