It was stated earlier in this thread "the OT was about fun."
Uh. No, it was not. It was a space Western. And Lucas himself said the OT was about the redemption of Vader. I challenge you to point me to the "fun" parts of ESB.
I think the more recent posts highlight a major problem with 7, 8, and 9. There's no story. There's no grand plan. It's just a bunch of rambling about a group of characters. And it feels that way. There's no sense that any of this is leading anywhere.
This is the only real, valid concerns about the movie I have seen. I think, for better or worse, they should have just left JJ Abrams in charge of all 3. Tell a consistent story.
That's my big problem. There is such a huge difference between VII and VIII.
I don't personally care if they went with the more "traditional" SW story they Abrams built up in VII or the "throw out your expectations" theme Johnson showed us in VIII, but at least be consistent.
I agree with the idea I read a couple pages back that if you want to throw out the traditional idea what a Star Wars story is, set VII a couple hundred years in the future and you have a blank slate (for the most part).
