I thought I read that.

So probably means we had an actual lightsaber battle with Luke and they cut it out of the movie. Brilliant move Rian!!!

Don't get me wrong, I love the characters. I think they've all been phenomenally casted and are really carrying the weight of a trilogy where the story is IMO falling very flat.

Rey being "World's Greatest" at using the force, learning lightsabers for Dummy's in 2 weeks, piloting the Falcon like Han Solo could only dream, etc. would be incredibly grating if Ridley didn't play her with such an incredible touch.

I also think Driver's performance as Ren is giving us one of the most compelling character arcs in the entire series.

I'm just not buying the connections between them all at this point. You're telling me that the First Order couldn't lightspeed jump another fleet directly in front of the non-lightspeed Resistance fleet? Or that non-Jedi force users can now survive in the full vacuum of deep space? There's just a lot of poorly thought out stuff that's detracting from great shooting and acting.
To piggy back on some of this, Rey is another area where I felt really let down by this movie. They did such a great job at build the character in TFA and Ridley does such an amazing job making Rey even more dynamic that the fact her role were pretty much pointless for this movie was really a downer. It seemed like the character was just going through the motions the entire movie, she needed to be trained...poof, you're trained...she needed to find out who her parents were....poof, here's your parents, they're nobody....she needs to find her place in the universe...poof, you're now the last Jedi congrats. All of these big moments in the character's evolution that should have been emotional moments to define the film felt like they were an after thought to a scene the director wanted us to get to (gave us the knowledge, because we as the audience needed to know....I call it the Severus Snape principle, giving a key plot point in the most random, out of context and/or off handed way possible).

This might be more personal as someone who has a 2 year old daughter, and I was excited about a movie hero she could grow up with/identify with that I would enjoy watching too. So I'm a little bit pissed when I see what I think are pivotal moments fumbled in her character development.

Huh. When Luke collapsed after his force projection he grabs the rock and looks to the horizon and I swear there was a black box in the middle of the sun, as if it was a ship heading there. Then they cut to Leia and Rey both sensing something and my reaction was "Oh damn! Someone's coming for Luke!" And then nothing came of it and he disappeared.

Okay, thank you, I thought I was taking crazy pills. I saw that also and thought "oh s***, Kylo is coming for him, here we go."

Glad I'm not alone. Plus Luke gets a look on his face when he looks out at the horizon as if he is reacting to something. I'm convinced maybe they cut something. Made it disappointing to think something was going to happen and then he's like "Nah, I'm tuckered out, I'm just going to disappear." WTF

me too.

I'm ok with Luke transcending but I just don't get why he had to. Ben sacrificed himself for Luke because that was the only way to let the group get to the Falcon. Yoda was old and had pneumonia and his body was dying.
But Luke was seemingly fine, I guess 'losing the will to live' runs in the family.

I don't agree with everything here, but he summarizes my thoughts on the Canto Bight part of the story really well:

Nope. Not unless you're a comic book fan.
Let's not get off track, but either the majority of people are comic book fans or they're just good movies.

Luke thinks about murdering his nephew in his sleep?!? Ugh.

Let's be honest, though. Thinking about murdering your nephew in their sleep is a fairly universal uncle situation.

This may seem like a paradox, but I liked what Canto Bight symbolized thematically, I just didn't like the way it was executed on screen. Did anyone else feel that?

I've never bought a comic book. And those were good movies.

Compared to ANH? No they weren't.
We aren't talking about ANH are we? And ANH doesn't mean as much by itself unless it's couple with ESB and ROTJ and the revelations that come after it. Just like TFA doesn't mean as much without the revelation of what happened to Luke's Jedi Academy/Temple.
take your personal e-***** fight somewhere else please.

She left to go find Luke. There wasn't much time to sit around and celebrate because the First Order knew where the base was and was coming for them.

How crazy is this. Right now, Last Jedi sits at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes critics reviews. That's 1% behind Empire, making it the second best reviewed Star Wars movie (tied with the original and Force Awakens). It only has a 57% fan rating, tying it with Attack of the Clones for the worst fan rating. It's like they have two different copies of the movie people are watching.

Very much so. It wasn't bad story wise so much as it was CGI overkill and prequel vibes. If it was shot better it would have been more tolerable.

I used the casino as an example early talking to a friend of why I like TFA better visually. In TFA when Han and Rey walk into the bar it is mainly real people in costumes, puppets, robots, it looks REAL. In TLJ they walk into the casino and it's a CGI f-fest. ugh.

Back to my point, for a lot of people that call themselves critics, this movie was a 10/10 as soon as a purple haired woman put a pilot with toxic masculinity in his place and sacrificed herself to resist a fascist leader.

I have a hard time believing movie critics would like a movie just because of its feminism, there's plenty of super left movies that suck that critics hate.

If anything I'm surprised there aren't think pieces about how the central female character of the movie spends all her time running from man to man to man.

I wondered before, during and still after watching the movie if Rey and Kylo Ren are going to exchange places in Episode 9.

We know Kylo Ren is a weak Supreme Leader and Rey is a kick ass Jedi, but what if she ends up going to the darkside and Kylo Ren ends up fighting for the resistance?
The conversations will be uncomfortable, but we all have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable for progress to be made.

They don't like it JUST because of that, but for a multitude of other virtues it signals in different ways. It doesn't bother me, tbh, other than that I think it's no better than a 7/10 based strictly on standard metrics of what makes/doesn't make a good film. But, if an Asian woman releasing rabbit ponies to destroy the casino of the 1% floats your boat, it's whatever.

maybe so, but considering all the bad guys in the past, he is by far the weakest minded one and the fact that he held back when he had his radar locked on to his mother hints that there's more to explore about his character.

There does have to be an explanation for why critics are LOVING it and average fans feel pretty underwhelmed, and I honestly think my explanation is part of it. Entertainment usually isn't purely entertainment, for better or worse.

He held back then and later he kills Snoke and saves Rey. If he was going to flip then that was the tie. Once Rey shuts him down about ruling the galaxy I think he's locked in a "bad guy" even if he's not pure evil like ones of the past.
