I finally saw it tonight so I can now read through some of the comments. No problem if people didn't like it, but some of the nit picky reasons absolutely no movie could survive, it's meant to be a fun popcorn movie - that's all. I can finally see why Lucas didn't want to make more of them, he knew what was coming and the impossible standards his movies are held to,
I Just try to enjoy it for what it is, and what it isn't. Makes it a lot easier.

Jmo.

Both movies were developed around the same time. Another Armageddon / Deep Impact situation. It just took this one way longer for all the pieces to fall into place, and WB had already committed a ton of money to it by the time Disney released Jungle Book.

Ah yes, kind of like 1994, the golden age of Wyatt Earp movies.

Definitely meant purely performance-wise.

CGI, I'd still give to Avatar, even over Apes. But Apes is a close second and Davey Jones is third. Probably tied with Gollum.

Are you speaking in terms of being well-rendered (which is what it appears you're talking about) or realism (as close to life-like as possible?
I don't really know how you quantify realism when it comes to creatures that don't exist in life. But both the Na'vi, and Davy Jones in Pirates, look like they COULD exist in the real world because the CGI is so convincing.

Went to my second showing today with one of my best friends, his 9-year-old son and my 5-year-old daughter. Completely different experience for me today, and I really liked it a whole lot more. I blame myself for setting my expectations bar so massively high and expecting this dead-set serious movie where Luke and Rey and Yoda's Ghost compared Force notes all day.

Still don't like the Canto Bight part - feels like an earth casino slightly dressed up - but really enjoyed a lot o things much more this time and saw a lot more detail than I had before. First time for my daughter to see a SW movie in the theater and she brought her plush Yoda and gave out a huge cheer when he appeared.

I wonder how many great arm wrestling movies were in the works the year Over The Top came out. Guess we may never know.

Just watched Rogue One again and it makes Last Jedi look like Battlefield Earth.

For the record, Vader's Star Destroyer blocks ships from going to light speed. They don't rip his ship in half.

Also the Vader porn at the end is probably my favorite SW moment ever.

I honestly don't get why the first order stopped using fighters on the running ships, either? Bc they were out of range of the capital ship? So what? The resistance had no more fighters, and it didn't look to me like they were capable of firing back at anything. If Poe could avoid canon fire long enough by himself to take out all the guns on the dreadnought, why couldn't Kylo or a couple other TIE pilots?

Not to derail this absolutely ridiculous thread, but I just don't agree about Avatar at all.

Don't get me wrong, it's very good CGI as far as it looks pretty and isn't cheap looking or anything. But the aliens and Pandora look like a video game cut scene. They look good, but don't look "real" to me at all... If that makes sense.

The apes are just another level. Just unbelievable how real they look... Davey Jones was very good though now that I think about it.

That's exactly what I meant with my somewhat confusing question....looking good compared to looking real. Yes, I know those blue aliens couldn't possibly actually be real, but there exists the possibility that they could look real. Just like those apes looked like real apes that were taught to act. IMO the Avatar aliens fell short of that, but not by much grant you.

Because they didn't want to kill themselves by trying to go through Vader's ship at light speed. What happened in Last Jedi is basically a kamikaze attack. If you have a ship full of people, you probably don't want to kill them all.

They blocked people who weren't willing to die.
And Rogue One was a spy/war movie set within the cannon, the sequential Star Wars movies are fantasies, meant to appeal to kids as well as adults - there is always gonna be some cheese. The whole whole idea of the spinoffs (beyond a naked money grab), is to allow different tones and themes than the sequential movies. They did a great job with Rogue One, but if you are hoping for that feel for 9, save your money and don't go because it's not happening.

Once the first transport blew up, why didn't the other pilots go into evasive actions? Did the FO ships miss the transports with a single shot?

No - the ships run into the Star Destroyer as it comes out of hyperspace and explode.

Agreed. Avatar just looked like a video game or a cartoon to me. The 3D effects were cool though.

This Star Wars reminded me of The Dark Knight Rises in an annoying way more than anything.

Oh... Luke is in a funk and doesn't want to help his friends. Wastes time in reluctance to help while people are dying.

Talk about loyalty.

All Jedi texts are in some tree on some island on some planet. Then they burn it. Really?

I never really got the meaning of the mirror scene when Ray's reflection was multiplied. I didn't draw any connections between that scene and the rest of the movie.

I liked the mirror scene. Really forced home the idea that the path of the dark side is really just narcisitic emptiness that will never lead to real fulfillment. Loved that scene

From Redstone's article
Quote:

Kathleen Kennedy founded the group in 2012 when she succeeded George Lucas as president of Lucasfilm, putting Kiri Hart, a former film and TV writer, in charge of the unit. Ms. Hart's first move was to make the story group entirely female

And now we know why the movie sucked...
Phat32

Your point that will be lost is that choosing to intentionally exclude a sex is bad for overall production quality.

The point that masks is insinuating that females are worse actors, which is not the issue.

Yeah I think people just had a hard nostalgia factor going, not just for Star Wars, but expecting ESB to be reborn in totally new and amazing ways right before their eyes. Ever since AOTC, I've approached all new SW content as a separate and completely unattached entity from the OT.

While a big fan, my expectations have learned to be tempered. I just thought this one had some major flaws that would not have been that hard to avoid or correct, and doing so would have resulted in a significantly better film.

Just got out of my 3rd showing - I love this movie. Really the only major weakness I still see is the Finn/Rose/DJ storyline. I liked the idea of what Rian was trying to do, but I don't think it was executed as well as the rest of the movie.

Other than that, this is a fantastic Star Wars movie. Saw this one in IMAX (2D) - hard to beat it.

Ironically, it's his trolling that draws people offsides to make the Entertainment more serious (lame Politics board posts).

There are 2 different scenes showing the Jedi texts on board the Falcon. One with Rey, one with Finn.
