Remember that they never showed the conversation that Michael had with them when they found out that he was a traitor. I bet in the convo that they had afterwards, Michael ended up telling them everything (i.e. they weren't going to where Sayid thought they were going). So, to adapt to the news that they weren't going to be near Sayid, Michael said he could ride the boat that he was told he would get to Sayid's fire, get Sayid, and bring him back to free everyone from the others. That's why Jack had a look of confidence at the end and gave that long look to Michael as he was riding off in his boat.

I kind of had the same thought Tracy, however, right before they were captured, Jack was yelling at Michael that htey were "Miles from the smoke signal", as if he didnt know

I'm guessing the word you left out is "know" but you don't know crap. This has been one of the most tightlipped productions TV has ever seen. The vast majority of the people INVOLVED in the project don't have the foggiest.

Well, the finale definitely didn't let me down. I really like that the EMP is what crashed the plane, I hadn't thought of that.

Wasn't EMP in the traditional sense. It was magnetisim ripping the plane apart rather than an electric wave shorting everything out.

Awesome finale.

Most of my shows are gone now. Lost can drag their story out for as long as they want. I got nowhere else to go.

THe OC was good in the first season, but it has sucked since because they rush throught storylines in 1 or 2 episodes and have to basically rehash the same situation over and over. I am glad LOST doesn't do that. IF they gave you guys answers every episode, how long would they be able to carry on with the intrigue?

Great finale -

My take, although maybe this was obvious and ya'll are looking for a deeper meaning

-The smoke was from the explosion in the hatch, that's the reason it was miles away.

If you follow the website trail from the Hanso commercial, you read the following story:

It all began with good intentions. That is what HE felt as he steered the launch, alone, to the ISland. As he emerged through the encircling shroud of fog he saw the splendor unfold in front of him. A lush green unlike anything anywhere else on the planet. Green valleys crowned by equally lush mountains. And the beach shining breathlessly as the fog parted way. It was as if IT was a living breathing entity alive and growing since it emerged from a volcanic rupture a billion years ago. As he guided the launch to that beach his thoughts drifted back to the warning and he knew this was not going to be a bikini watch. He had a mission and then had to get out. That was the deal, half deposited into the number coded Cayman Island bank account upon departure and half upon return. It would buy the revenge he had lusted after for as long has he could remember. The previous mission, well they never returned, except for the old man who he visited in Cozumel. The only survivor, and he never spoke of what happened to the mission. The only one to return, but without the tapes. So he made a courtesy call in Cozumel. The old man was close to dying, just a shell of the genetic vigor he had when he escaped and all he would say is 'Pedro', 'Pedro'.
He put it all in the report, and set for departure. The atmosphere changed though at the Institute as his departure date neared. He had more than a passing suspicion that that someone just didn't even want him to return ... someone from the Hamso faction

I'm pretty sure the smoke was Sayid's signal. If it was the hatch, I think they would have noticed that it was behind them and not to the side.

Did anyone else notice that the guy who brought Desmond to the hatch (can't remember his name) was the same American officer who worked with and evenutally freed Sayid in the Gulf?

The Gulf War happened 1990-91. The officer had been on the island approx 3 years before the plane crash.
