The show is a ghost of its former self.

Yall are acting like this show was once on par with Citizen Kane or something. It's never really been that good, at least not after the 1st episode.

They figured out in the 2nd episode that walking around in zombie guts made them relatively invisible, and we ripped the a new one for washing it off (because it was freaking stupid). Merle was kind of a ridiculous cartoon character, the Shane/Lori relationship was absurd, Carl was waaaay more annoying in the beginning than he was in season 8, Andrea was the most annoying character ever, and Rick shot his gun inside a tank and suffered no permanent hearing loss.

Rick rode a horse dozens of miles through a zombie apocalypse from the suburbs to a city, met up with a random group of weird strangers, and then somehow met up with this his long-lost family in a secret campground several miles outside of the city he'd just rode into on his horse. None of that at all made any sense and was about as statistically impossible as a freaky disease turning dead people into flesh-eating monsters.

Oh, and just to show you how bad it was all along, please let me remind you of...
Rick Grimes: "We met a siiiigh-inn-tiiist" (Season 2, Episode 1...if I recall)

There's some kind of weird cognitive bias going on where yall can't remember how bad this show was from the get-go.

I stand by my comment.

No one is wanting it to be Citizen Kane, but the show has had way better days than it does now. To say "it's always been bad so just accept it" is kind of ignorant.

It's had its ups and downs for sure. But it's stuck in zombie soap opera mode right now. Episode after episode of cheesy cardboard thin characters with little to no plot advancement, including minimal zombie action. Not to say it hasn't had these moments in the past, but the rapidly falling viewership is screaming out that this one is a bigger issue than ever before.

WTF did they not just follow the damn comic.

it is all written there.
a driving narrative.
conversations already written.
tension.
conflict.
AND IT MAKES SENSE.

So much this. And it's not like the show is being done by a different group of people with no connection to the comic. They guy behind the comic is heavily involved in the show!

Who was the dude Simon shot to punish Maggie and where was he. I though it was the big Samoan dude but he is still alive.

I

I was also very confused about what happened here.
i have to admit, i didnt really like episode 1 so never watched anymore until i got the flu, then i sort of got hooked on it with the episode when they had to kill the little lost girl zombie.

it was pretty good for a while but the whole 'everyone turns into complete moron ******* when negan shows up' thing was really weak for the past few seasons, and frankly like most people i couldnt even figure out what the hell was going on in this episode.

Rick's whole plan was to kill Negan. So he ends up in a fight with the guy that ends with him having a gun and yet running away from the guy with a bat.

I thought Carl said "it happened because I brought them here" not "him here". I didnt even see the guy he was with when he got bit. But it was really smart of Carl to take all of their survivors including his baby sister into an enclosed area knowing he was going to die. Its like the prison all over again where a sick person dies and turns killing a bunch of others.

One fundamental issue, which is more of a symptom of the issues, is that there is only one character that I might give two ****s about if they got their head caved in by Lucille or mauled by walkers (Daryl), and even with him, I'm finding myself giving less of a **** every week if that were to happen.

Good Forbe's Article (link) on the decline and what, if anything, AMC can do about it.

Good article. I particularly like this quote:

"I believe The Walking Dead would be better off---or at least stand a chance at being better off---without Gimple. It's nothing personal."

I don't know if they thought they could milk this show for 20+ years like the Simpsons or not, but they really should set and announce and endpoint to retain the viewers that haven't bailed.

Good article and the graph is pretty telling from about season 3 on. Big spikes for the premiere and the finale of the season and a significant trough in between.

Unrelated but the dude said GoT season 7 was disappointing, WTF?!

Even great TV shows like Game of Thrones start to wear thin after a while, as evidenced by that show's incredibly disappointing seventh season.
Wow. Talk about ruining a great article. If I only watched GoT, I definitely wouldn't trust his judgement on TWD after reading that!

His review of the finale is linked in that article and Wow.

I watched tonight's Walking Dead with a mixture of dismay, disdain and disbelief. The show has fallen on such hard times it's still kind of hard to believe. By the end of the episode's "shocking" reveal, I could only shake my head in disgust. What a joke this show has become. A bad joke.

I'm not going to recap this midseason finale. I don't have the energy to summarize. I don't care enough anymore about the nonsensical plot and the bad writing to go that extra mile. The Walking Dead doesn't deserve careful recaps or deep analysis anymore. Its producers and writers are either lazy or hacks or some horrible combination of the two. Whatever the case, this episode was embarrassing to watch. I can only imagine how embarrassing it must be to have written, produced, directed or acted in it.

Did the flashback and cutting scenes out of order ever amount to anything other than "well...it will LOOK artsy." Gimple always looked like a guy trying WAY too hard to appear intellectual so I guess I'm not surprised.

I read through all the posts. I admit I was playing in my phone through most of the episode. I also started fast forwarding through all the face montages.

I had similar confusion as others:
1) couldn't figure out who got shot in OR out of Maggie's car
2) really couldn't figure out why/how Maggie and Jesus got back to hilltop with guns with no saviors escorting them.... thought the scene where she shoots the prisoner was a flashback... why the **** would the saviors just let her go with some promise of hers to Do something?!?!?

3) was confused as hell with why Carl started limping after talking to Megan on wall. Well until end when he showed bite mark, but was confused as to when got bit.

4) what the **** kind of grenades did the saviors have in their grenade launchers that could make entire houses explode from the inside like that??

5) the stupid road trip by gay guy and Enid.

6) the comic relief of Tara with the chick who used to be really hot in those shorts and midriff baring shirt

7) the timing of saviors getting out and doing everything they did before the people who had the "big plan" to beat the saviors knew what was going on.

8) what exact mastermind plan did Eugene come up with except "Hey, you guys should shoot your way out of here instead of not shooting your way out of here"

And if you are wondering why I am posting all this at 1am, it's because I have food poisoning and have some time to kill in between trips to bathroom.

I want to think they'd come back and explain what his plan was/why it was so genius, since it's being set up to be a reason for everyone to hate Eugene later. But you're probably right and it won't even be mentioned again.

Is there a chance they're going to do the second half of the season going backwards to the moment when Carl and Rick encounter the kid who was hungry? They could then redo all the events how they would have played if Rick would have accepted him in instead of shooting to make him run away. Had Rick not run him off Carl wouldn't have gotten bit.

That could tie to the first episode of the season where intercut scenes show Rick crying and distraught or waking up happy and having breakfast with his family. I always felt like those were scenes showing two possible futures. I think the comic did something like this to with the Negan story arch. Would also fit a nice hollywood political narrative about accepting outsiders and how much better life is if we do.

That sounds like a good way to chase off the viewers who haven't given up on the show yet. So, I'd say better than 50-50 that's what they do.

Last month, producer David Alpert defended the show in light of its decline in viewers. He explained that looking at the figures for the show's live broadcast was misleading as to how popular it really is. "I don't think in any way the brand has lost its relevance in general," he said. "I think we're just seeing a decline in urgency across all media to consume something at a specific time. I still get people coming up to me at conventions talking about, they're in the middle of season six. They can't believe what's going on."

Haha. BS. Absolutely everyone I know that was a big Walking Dead fan is barely hanging on by a thread now with the show.

I was never intrigued with the whole Negan plot. Plus, there are too too many unimportant characters now. I need more zombies and less people. But, it's over; find a cure and be done with it already. Bring back all the important characters in a final flashback then fade to black. The Walking Dead.
