Might as well rip the band-aid off...

I'm hearing that TG:M is likely not only moving from its June date - which is all but inevitable at this point - but will probably land in SUMMER 2021 when it does. I was hoping it'd move to, say, October of this year, but as I've been told, "this is a backyard bbq fireworks at night summer movie." So they're likely not going to release it any other time of year.

IF that's the case, here's my new guess... Memorial Day Weekend 2021.

The Matrix 4 is currently scheduled for the weekend prior, but that will almost assuredly be delayed. As of now, the only title set for Memorial Day Weekend is Disney's live-action Cruella, starring Emma Stone, but that's not really direct competition and shouldn't be an issue either.

That said, the situation is fluid, and a 2021 date isn't a certainty quite yet. Just relaying what I'm hearing as of now...

I feel like they would need to do something different than summer of '21 because Mission impossible 7 is slated for summer of 21 so that would be two huge Tom Cruise movies so close together Surely they wouldn't push MI:7 out another year too??

M:I7 likely won't make 2021 now, or at least likely won't make summer 2021. Everything that was currently filming for summer 2021 - Batman, Matrix, Jurassic World 3, M:I7, etc - probably won't make their current dates. But even if they could make up the time, with next to no summer blockbusters this year, it's looking more and more like there's going to be a ripple effect on the entire release calendar for the next couple of years. Basically, many currently-scheduled blockbusters for 2020 and 2021 are likely to shift back half a year to a year or so.

Studios should crank out some of the greatest hits in the lag and have the tickets be 50% - put Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Titanic, various Marvel and Disney movies back out in the theater.

I think theaters should show older movies that people either weren't alive for or haven't seen in theaters since they were kids.

Cinemark always has their Classic Movies series. It's a bummer, because I wanted to take my kids to see Airplane! in May and my oldest to see the Shining in June. Close Encounters is in October (which may still happen).

Put classic movies in the theaters for low prices and encourage families to experience these movies in the theaters. Say, $10 for a family of four for tickets and they'd be more likely to splurge on popcorn and drinks (which is where theaters make their money anyway).

Alamo right now is doing some kind of virtual theater thing with old movies. I think yesterday was Terror Tuesday.

I take this as FANTASTIC news. As of two days ago, my guy was pretty convinced it was summer '21, and he worked on the movie. Means Paramount made a bold,, last minute call to take on whatever lands at Christmas now, either Dune or Tenet, which was unexpected. So stoked to be able to watch this at Christmas now with the family.

The last time we went to a family movie with my parents, my family and my kids (all 3 generations) over Christmas was Indiana Jones 4 - and we all walked out disappointed... I have a feeling this one will deliver for all!

Does this give you hope that MI:7 remains in Summer 2021 and MI:8 Summer of 2022?

I'll put it this way... if M:I7 can be ready for summer 2021, Paramount will release it summer 2021. In other words, calendar-wise, I don't see any issue with Paramount releasing a Tom Cruise blockbuster at Christmas and then another Tom Cruise blockbuster seventh months later in July. For M:I7, the main issue is how fast they can get back to work. If filming can resume again in, say, June, they might be able to pull it off. But any later than that and I seriously doubt they make the current July '21 release.
