Another guess... considering she looks to potentially be front and center at the funeral, it could be Penny Benjamin's admiral father. Maybe that's how her and Mav reconnect...

That's a good theory. IRL, flyovers at funerals are for admirals or big time politicians (talking Senators or higher). So the F18 missing man tribute for her dad as a retired admiral would line up pretty well (and yes, I know it won't all be accurate to real life, but would at least fit).

Good to know. I don't know much about the Navy, but that big of a procession just didn't make sense to me for a younger pilot or even an Iceman/Viper type.

So did Cruise learn to fly a Tomcat and these are all real shots? Somehow that seems plausible.

Tomcats are all retired, have been since 2006. They're flying Super Bugs.

That doesn't really answer the question. Did he learn to fly a fighter jet or is he in the backseat acting like he's flying?

Probably a question for TCTTS.

Backseat acting. He desperately wanted to learn to fly them himself, but the Navy wouldn't let him.

I'm in on the funeral being the admiral's as well.

My favorite part of these trailers is in every non flying scene (minus the funeral) Cruise has this smirk on his face like "I can't f'ing believe we're finally making this film and it's AWESOME!"

And just FYI, Powell is from Texas, but now lives in LA and apparently throws the best parties with some of the most attractive women ever. I've seen pics, and the dude absolutely kills in that department. I was close to getting to attend his birthday last year via my buddy who knows him, but my buddy ended up not being able to make it, and thus I couldn't either. One of these days...

Couldn't Iceman be an admiral as well? The first trailer states that Maverick should be a 2 star admiral and Iceman was up there shooting migs right with Maverick in Top Gun and he got 1st place as well.

So MAYBE we are seeing an admirals funeral because Iceman made it to that rank....

I know it's been mentioned somewhere before (page 12 of this thread), but I'd just like to remind everyone that this:

...really is Tom Cruise's actual P-51 Mustang.

This man is super serious about his craft.

In my mind, the funeral can only be for either Iceman, or Ed Harris (who was prominent in the first trailer, yet absent from this latest one). Patty Benjamin's dad was an admiral in 1986, so he would be 80+ now; if he's that distinguished a guy, he'd be at Arlington.

For that matter, I think Connelly is slightly too young to play Patty Benjamin. But it's only by 5 years or so.

Gripe... If they're going to get a token black guy to play a two star, did they at least ask Clarence Gilyard?

Just a point of curiosity...

Does anybody know how receptive the US Military is to working with Hollywood to make movies like these? I know we see them all the time. On one hand, I could see them being all for it since I would think it would help with recruiting. On the other hand, I could see them being hesitant since their primary job obviously is to defend the country and not make movies.

Penny Benjamin. Patty is the fat older, jealous, bitter sister who drives a tow truck. Patty is the one who kept trying to tow Maverick's bike after he and Penny practiced touch and gos all night. Patty was also the one who ratted out Maverick to their father.

Some theorize Patty secretly had a thing for Mav, but in reality it was Charlie and Mrs. Goose that sweetened her koolaid. But it could never be for an admirals daughter back in '86.

Kinda sad.

After Top Gun I believe that the USN has been more receptive to it. It basically served as great publicity. Iirc The Final Countdown made the USN really hesitant initially. When Stargate SG-1 was airing, they had a USAF consultant on set pretty much all the time I believe. Hell, two Chiefs of Staff of the USAF appeared on an episode, General Michael Ryan and General John Jumper both played themselves in two episodes.

I think the USN/DoD basically looks at it as kind of a recruiting tool at this point.

Not going to lie, aviation needs some positive PR to get more young people interested. I see things like Top Gun as a positive if it gets more kids interested in flying.

I see your reasoning.

After the latest trailer my first reaction was that Maverick goes back to top gun as an instructor, gooses kid is in the class and dies in a training accident.

Maverick gets torn up about it feeling responsible (again) ... quits and puts in for retirement ... then gets roped in to some super secret spook mission and redeems himself at the end (which explains the U2 style helmet).

I could see Iceman dying, but if that's the case would it be that big of a deal overall. Getting caught up in a situation where Son of Goose is killed .... that would be a huge plot device.

Overkill? Probably ... but who knows.

Finally, I'm still onboard with the theory that maverick HALO parachutes into Iran to rescue Iceman and steals one of the last flying F-14s (with Iceman in rear seat), they make a dramatic carrier landing in the NAG ... roll credits.
