He kind of did. He went in to take out as many of those *******s as he could so Daryle and the rest would have a fighting chance.
Merle almost saved them all.

Martinez or whoever will take over. Martinez didn't seem like he'd go to war over some vendetta. I think he's sided with the Gov, but he probably also realize the Gov egged the fight on.
And as Philip and others have noted, Merle single handily cut the number of skilled fighters the Gov has in half. Yes, he still has more town folk, but they aren't great fighters (certainly against living humans who actively shoot back).
He'll have to throw a lot more cannon fodder at the prison.

So how many skilled fighters did he have? Others here have said Merle dropped 8 of the Gov's guys in the attack?
I don't think there were more than 16 guys who attacked the National Guard guys?

He took like 10-12, but I think they left a handful to guard Woodbury while they were gone.

I just think the Gov only had ~16 fighters at the time of the NG ambush. Then subtract 2-3 when Merle chased Michonne, then we can subtract a few more when Rick broke out his people. Thats just the Govs fighters.
Then we got Milton tabulating "of age adults," which probably includes the remaining fighters. +4 (Tyrese) Then they train them up. Then subtract 6-8 (Merle)

Don't think herschel is going to make it. His daughters are the future. Maggie with Glenn and young blondie with Carl. They will make it.
Herschel has passed on everything he needs to and is at peace. He can rest.
Darryl and rick are untouchable. It's hard to say on Carol. She is surprisingly resilient, and I think Merle's acknowledgment of that in the last epoisode bode's well for carol's odds of survival.
Tyrese and his girlfriend will be around for a while.

It was believed that Carl looking at the badge was intended to portray him thinking about the past life they once lived, not anything about Rick. Carl also looks at the picture he took from the diner right before the badge.
Isn't it about time Carl busted a cap in something that wasn't a zombie!!! He's already warmed up having shot season 1 guy with body armor!

I thought that too at first but in the video he isn't wearing the sheriff hat but he is in this picture. So he could be looking at the badge more than once in this episode. The second time thinking about his dad.
