I thought the episode was slow and predictable. The shootout and Merle death were ok. The finale better deliver the goods.
Devastating. Really really really well done. Michael Rooker was great.
Also, he was only on the screen for about a minute, but that was the most vicious the Gov has looked yet.

Great episode. The last three have been really good IMO compared to previous episodes.
Those two kills by Michonne while she was tied up were two of the best in walking dead history behind Carl killing Lori of course.
So so episode that was made good by Merle's bad ass plan and death. Not to say I disliked Merle. After the first 20 minutes of the episode though I was about to throw in the towel with how slow it was going. This isn't Mad Men or BB. Shiit needs to happen regularly. Dialogue can't carry the show. If the action doesn't pick up more next season, I might be out.

Holy... People actually thought this episode was good?? Damn, I must really just not understand... You can't just develop a character (poorly at that) in one episode and then just kill him off and hope for people to feel emotion.
Merle is the evil guy who does the stuff no one wants to do. Michonne has a 2 min talk with him and all of a sudden he has become a changed man--from villain to hero. Apparently that is character development in this show.
You had the same **** with axle and the black prisoner. Axle was "part of the group" and started opening up to carol. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!!! BOOM, DEAD. Black prisoner just a prisoner but decides that he'll do anything to stay in the group, even save a "fellow" group member... Boom, dead.
What a joke. You have the opportunity to build up Merle for death (which we all predicted was going to happen before the season ended...) over an entire season and that's what they come up with?

^ Agreed. I guess maybe I expect too much from a zombie show, but the lazy writing is starting to bore me. I'm hoping for the best with the finale and I'll give season 4 a try, but if it's more of the same Im done.

Forgot t-dawg too. Dude finally gets a couple lines, showing compassion to let the prisoners into the group and gets killed in the same episode.
For those tl;dr folks, my main point is that you develop a character over an entire season if you hope to give them a meaningful death.

It wasn't one episode of character development that makes this so good. Daryl had been working on his brother all season. You finally see Merle start to break (in a GREAT scene in the generator room); he is obviously conflicted--given his history with the governor, the group, and his brother becoming a better man. He responds by making a bad call, Michonne points it out, so he goes off to rectify all the bad and protect his brother.
We then get to see how much more of a mad dog the gov is than Merle (which we've all been waiting for), and it ends with a devastating goodbye for Daryl.
Maybe brother stuff gets to me more than y'all. I thought it was great.
Also, some said the beginning was slow. You must have missed the conversation between Rick and Merle. Some great writing there. And Herschel reading scripture over Rick changing his mind was a pretty great scene as well.

This is a very simple, unobservant understanding of what happened.
Merle's character started to change when he was reunited with Daryl in Woodbury.
And he was doing the dirty work for the prison group, to protect his brother and benefit the group. That's far from rooftop Merle in season 1. His character developed way before tonight's episode.

Yep. The revelation a few episodes back of what his brother was left to endure after Merle left their family, combined with the realization of who his brother is today, is a lot to take in. Michone's conversation did not change anything in Merle; the dialogue simply made it more obvious that Merle was never truly an evil person. Based on what he packed in the duffel bag, I assumed from the get go that Merle was going to use Michone as bait to get close to the governor. I think the conversation with Michone only made him release her; it did not change Merle's end goal.

I thought that episode was awesome. I could give a crap about Merle's character development (although I thought it was there), it was Daryl's reaction to zombie Merle that I found priceless.
Daryl for a moment slipped back into that little kid dynamic with his brother, and then vented out that frustration with an emotional zombie kill.

I'm not sure I counted 8. I thought it was like 3 or 4? I'm sure the gun nuts will get mad that an AR-15 round didn't go through the kid into the gov.
What's sad is if Rick's group had actually decided to ambush the Governor and let Merle plan it, man, they probably could have taken out the Governor or at least most of his veteran force.

You saw him shoot 5 and take a few more shots. And I'm a "gun nut"...you must believe the media that the .223 is a super caliber with unlimited power. It isn't. What they showed was fine.

Fair enough, I was exercising while watching so my count was probably way off.
And I was just joking about the fact every week there seems to be some major gun flaw people bring up and I was just joking.

I may have finally reached this point. Had absolutely zero interest in watching last night. I'm sure I will force myself to watch it sometime this week before the finale next Sunday. Don't know if i'll continue next season though...
I do think the new exec producer brought in a new weaponsmaster. No major mistakes in the last four weeks...and there have been some great ones this season.
Damn, I really wanted to see the Gov use his secret weapon...bent barrel rifles.

And I feel this will come down to a Rick governor showdown. Just hope they don't cliff hang us until next season.

The preview basically shows Rick's group packing up and you don't actually see any firefight scenes involving his group.
I was thinking the same thing, Woodbury just might going charging in and find that Rick and co. have let out all the zombies from the closed off sections out.
I'd really like the gov. to be a "left for dead" situation so he can pop back up in later seasons if need be but that's just me

This show is do godawful I can't believe I'm wasting my time watching this drivel.

I'm thinking Ricks group is attacking Woodbury after they have already packed everything worth having up and they are ready to move on. They are attacking a skeleton crew at Woodbury just to make that place unlivable, and the only option left to the gov is to live within the prison. I think it's a let down, but I don't see them eviscerating the cast list by losing 3-4 ppl.
