Question: Is there an easy way to get back there after leaving?

I'd really hate to travel through aftland a 3rd time.

Question - how does the "Soul Trap" magic spelll work? Do you have to hit the enemy with it BEFORE or AFTER you kill them? The description says "if enemy is killed within 60 seconds, fills a soul gem.

Whenever I try to use it AFTER a kill, I hold down the left trigger (XBox) and the Magicka bar depletes down to about 50% and then stops. That's when I release the trigger. It zaps the dead body, but then nothing happens - I don't get the soul.

Am I supposed to zap the enemy BEFORE killing them? I never can remember to do that in the heat of the moment, plus that seems dumb.

When they die the soul is gone... you have to cast it on them before their soul goes to heaven (now... don't you feel guilty for wanting to rob them of eternal joy)

Pro tip: get the enchantment for use at an arcane enchanter and put it on a weapon and boom, all you have to do is swing your sword and if you have a soul gem big enough it will be filled once you kill them. No messing around with casting a spell and then trying to kill them.

Yeah, I know, AgFan, but here was my logic - if my weapon is enchanted with Soul Trap, then every single damn deer or Skeever I kill will eat up a gem, and waste magic charges on smalltime prey.

Then I thought, "well, just use a generic weapon for those kills, and switch to a Soul Trap weapon for the final blow of elite bad guys whose souls you want" - problem with that idea is that in the heat of battle I either forget to switch at the last second, or it seems cheesy to switch.

So my solution was to kill without worry, and then apply the Soul Trap magic spell only for those prime souls.

Based on the answers, looks like it can't be done that way.

You can drop a soul gem and it will loose its charge. Pick it back up and it will be empty.

I see, yeah you have to soul trap before hand, with the weapon soul trap enchantment I have it on a sword in my left hand and just a regular one in the right hand so if I meet a small creature I only use the right sword, im a dual weilder though so that works for me.

The best way, imo, to handle the Soul Trap weapons is to enchant a weapon with minimal duration (1 second). This way every killing blow traps a soul.

Don't worry about wasting the effect on non-killing blows, you'll have a massive amount of charges on the weapon. I have a bow I created at lvl 41 with a black soul gem (grand) that had around 1500 charges. ETA: my enchant level wasn't even that high, around 60 at the time iirc

I've yet to recharge it. Of course it helps that I pretty much one-shot everything from stealth except dragons, which you can't soul trap anyhow.

Soul trap on dead animals is an easy way to level conjuration but it is cheesy.

Who is everybody using as a follower? Been using lydia since the beginning and now I am level 44. She seems kinda dumb and died easy until I gave her legendary deadric armour.

Lydia died in my first playthrough. In my second she would either get in the way or shoot me with arrows. So I simply don't use followers.

I couldn't imagine not having a follower. I need some to help carry all my swag. I am still using lydia but I am only level 20.

Two questions tonight:

1. Is there anything to do with dragon scales and/or bones besides sell them? I'm sitting on a crap-ton of them, thinking that at some point I'll be given the option of turning them into dragon armor, but so far that isn't an option at the Smithery. Should I just sell them??

2. Where is the infmaous "Banishing" enchantment? Seems like I have every enchantment EXCEPT that one, and of course that's the one that a bunch of you said can be used for big cash when enchanting daggers, etc.

Thanks.

Make a billion iron daggers and get your smithing to 100, then you can use them for armor.
AgKJ

Ahh, so once your Smithing is up to 100, Dragon Armor is shown as an option at the Smithery?

Also - do I need just the Scales, or the Bones too?

So I tried to rest my nord battlemage in his breezehome bed right before I turned the game off last night. Little did I know the dark brotherhood would be keeping me up playing way later than I wanted.

My number one pet peeve: random dragons that kill people needed to finish side quests. If not for these d-bags I would not have so many unfinished miscellaneous quests.

Help! (Xbox user)

I can't summon my unbound dremora lord anymore. I go through the spell animation and cast it, but no dremora appears. I went back to the summoning circle on top of winterhold, where you complete the quest to unlock that spell, and the dremora is just standing there. I can't interact with him in any way (attacking, talking, pickpocket). I even got my flame thrall to attack him and nothing happened. He can walk around to avoid being in the firing line of my atranoch, but doesn't follow me anywhere. Anyone else encounter this problem? Or know how to fix it?

Lydia lasted about 10 minutes for me - which is twice as long as any of the horses I had before I gave up on those.

How do you guys keep followers and horses from getting killed in the very first fight??
SanAntonioAg09
How long do you want to ignore this user?
KJ,

Get Shadowmere (horse) from the Dark Brotherhood. Pretty sure she's invincible (I think she may be able to "die", but will respawn).

As for followers, I never use them. I'd imagine your best chance is to upgrade their gear and to pick someone who compliments your playing style, so if you're melee, get a mage/archer, and vice versa.

finally caught up on this thread. late to the skyrim party.

So far I'm on the "travel to greybards" main quest. I'm a Level 20 High Elf Battlemage. my primary things are dual wielding fire, and I use a skyforgce refined battleaxe that has a fire enchantment.

i also have heavy armor maxed out and everything i wear is enchanted. the highborn is really nice, and i focused my enchantments on quicker magkica regeneration. (grand souls are the tits(

my follower is currently Lidia, and i have given her a skyfore greatsword refined, that does absorb health enchantment, and ive also given her all the staffs i have. she loves to dual wield fire, paralysis, and conjure familiar staffs from afar, and then when it gets down and dirty bust out the greatsword.

Get Derkeethus as a follower and you won't have that problem. Alas, I made a mistake with him and he's stuck in a stupid "maze". Oh well.

Questions

How do I unlock some of these shouts? I know I need dragon souls but I've killed about 4 dragons and "absorb the soul" but I don't know where the souls go. Do I need to put them in soul gems or something? Or is there something else I need to do?

Also, how do you make hundreds of iron daggers for smithing? Don't you need hundreds of iron ore pieces or iron ingots? Or am I missing something?
