It's a phobia and it is something I have to deal with.

I can kill them relatively easy and I enjoy watching them disintigrate.

Not nearly as far along as you guys, so I have a noob question:I

Can someone explain the soul gems concept to me? I'm trying to get my enchanting on soon, but I don't get the deal with the various fill amounts of the gems. How do I get a full one? Very confused.

Stronger monsters have more powerful souls. Early in the game you won't meet much that will fill a grand soul gem.

You have to use the spell (or have a weapon enchanted with) soul trap to catch a soul. Cast spell on target then kill it and you'll get their soul if you have a big enough empty gem.

Human souls can only be captured in black soul gems.

Basics of Soul Gems:

Soul Gems come in a variety of sizes (Petty, Common, Grand) and the correspond to the 'size' of the soul you are going to capture (petty, common, grand, etc.)

Some soul gems that you find and buy come pre-filled with souls.

Empty soul gems you will have to fill. In the conjuration school of magic (I think it's conjuration), there's a spell you can cast called "soul trap". If you cast the spell and kill the creature before the spell wears out, the creature's soul will then fill an empty soul gem in your inventory.

The bigger & badder the creature, the bigger and badder the soul to be captured.

The soul to be captured can only inhabit a soul gem that is equal or greater than it's size. So, a grand soul can only go into a grand soul gem, but a petty soul can go into any sized soul gem.

filled soul gems can be used to recharge enchanted items or to forge new enchantments onto items.

Black Soul Gems can only be filled with human souls.

If you have a Grand Soul gem that is filled with a petty soul, and you kill a creature with a grand soul, will it overwrite the petty soul in the gem or do you just fail to capture the soul?
Predmid

No?

once it has a soul, it's filled.

Thats what I figured. I had a soul trap enchant on my hammer and every time I bashed a wolf's head in I thought, "I bet this is wasting a gem."

question regarding souls:

When I'm enchanting a weapon, and I choose what particular soul gem to use, is that soul gem gone forever? Or is the soul within that gem the only thing taken away?

I'm scared to use my black soul gem or the star on anything for fear of it being a 1-time use.

Makes more sense now.

If Azure's Star is anything like previous versions, it can be used over and over and over again.

Anytime you use a soul gem in enchanting or recharging, the gem itself is used up and is gone forever.

Luckily, it seems that empty gems are much more common than previous ES games.

Well, I finally encountered a backward flying dragon. This ******* took forever to get down to 0% health because he flies around all kinds of crazy, but the really lame thing is that once he's down to 0 health, he just keeps on flying around like he's having a seizure or something. It sucks too, because I need to kill him for a random Winhelm mission I received. Here's a video of it:

Hopefully the next patch fixes this ish.

I have the same frakken problem! I can't finish the quest because of it either.

I'm a destruction/conjuration mage, so I have almost no use for soul gems at the moment. I basially only used them to keep Lydia's sword recharged.

P.S. in a confined space, Lydia would probably destroy me.

If you fill a larger soul gem with a smaller soul, you can drop that soul gem onto the floor and it will release the soul, allowing you to to fill it again with the proper sized soul.

I've never been able to tell what size soul I can expect from a given mob. I'm assuming skeevers are 'petty' and mammoths are 'grand', but how do you know about the animals in between?

In Morrowind it told you what soul was trapped, i.e. rat, Golden Saint, etc., but they changed it in Oblivion to the generic "common", 'grand", etc. That was one thing I was hoping they would change back in Skyrim. Sadly, the only way you can tell now is if you have a constant knowledge of what soul gems are in your inventory and keep track of what changes each time you trap a soul. That's annoying.
Predmid

because they can change.

iirc, it's based on the creature's level, not necessarily the type of creature.

In morrowind, not only did soul gems tell you what soul was in it, but it also skyrocketed their value. I think loot in morrowind was much better. You had to work for Daedric, and owning a set meant you had your *****together.

Well. This ain't morrowind.

The Black Star is multi-use. It only holds one soul but can be reused over and over. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:The_Black_Star

I was hoping for an easier way to enchant by using the black star, but only having one soul in it is a bummer. Need a bunch of them so I can reload them with souls instead of buying new soul gems every time.

Oh and if you think Lydia is an idiot, what until Barbas the dog comes along... holy crap he is the most annoying NPC of any game, ever.

Star of Azura + weapon with soul trap enchant (Mace of Molag Bal) = long time Elder Scrolls win.

I hated barbas...especially when he would nip at you and push you around when you're standing still. I was half tempted to kill him and take the axe..

The mace of molag bal and wabbajack are both in my bedside chest at one of my houses. Don't remember which one... Markarth maybe. Not sure why, but I always seem to just keep all those valuables in a special chest and never think to actually use them.

Well, I finally bit the bullet and console added weight to my character on the PC.

I was sick of being slow and being able to pick up 2 things before I was overweight. I even have the heavy armor weight talent as well as the thieves guild armor as my secondary.

Ok, trying to get the Azura Star, and get absolutely stomped by the first guy. I guess I need to get fire resistance or enchant for fire resistance.
