It all makes sense now..
And ah yes...the dreaded lost save data. This has haunted me since the days of playing chronotrigger on SNES. Playstation was the worst. I'd have files of something like FF7 or Xenogears with dozens upon dozens of hrs on them and accidentally save over them or lose the whole damned mem card. Have yet to do it recently but man...I feel like it's due time....

No worries I really haven't touched in about a week either. Recently rediscovered Mount and Blade though. love that game. Best indie out there in my opinion. I'll probably jump back on tonight though.
Open ended question to every out there. How many characters do you have now on Skyrim? I have 3 total. 1 50ish lvl and 2 in their teens. Just wondering..

There are no current expansion packs for Skyrim.

I think Lydia was somehow killed in the college explosion. She had an ebony shield I found and some other items worth a lot of money too. She is nowhere to be found. Crap!

The first dlc is supposedly coming in February
Skyrim is a stand alone game, you don't have to buy the earlier 4 Elder Scroll games to enjoy it. It has some ties to the lore of the older games, but is totally independent of them. and amazing.

1 level 28 thief, finished the thieves guild questline then jumped to my next guy
1 level 46 two-handed tank, maxed out his twohanded skill so his archery also is pretty decent, beat the main questline and the companions questline with him
1 level 18 mage, just completed the civil war, about to start at the college of winterhold.

It was a psycho thriller that liked to mess with your head. All kinds of wierd stuff would happen to your character, and the soundtrack was exceptionally eerie.
Sometimes the programmers would flat out mess with your mind. Like, if you went a long time without saving, you would enter into a new room, and during the loading time, a fake "blue screen of death" would pop up for a few seconds, making you think you would have to start over from a long time ago.
One of the tricks was, once you get pretty close to the end of the game, when you went to load a game, it would show that all of your saved game files were gone.
Always made me crack up.

Started over as a Dark Elf Assassin with Destruction and one handed as my weapons.

Newbie question:
Should i explore ruins, caves, etc. as i discover them or wait until a quest takes me to that location?

it's a single player game.
no servers.
As for the cave question...take your pick.
Part of the Radiant AI is that for some quests, it will give you a random location for whatever it is you need to retrieve/kill/clear and it picks the location based on nearby caves, whether you have cleared them out or not, etc. So even if you explore places and then go questing, it will still try to give you a cave you haven't explored yet as the destination.
I have a level 40 dark elf archer and a level 20 breton mage. Will probably play a Nord thief/one hand type at some point.

I just spent the last two hours of game time wondering around Blackreach trying to find that Elder Scroll. Is there a map somewhere? The quest marker wont show me where to go.

Anytime I discover a cave (or any previously undiscovered locaation), I typically don't go into it, but instead get just close eough to it so that it becomes "discovered" on my map.
That way, it becomes "fast travel eligible", so I can go there later when the actual relevant story about it starts, or if I need to get to something else near it.

Avoid the big structure full of Falmer servants. Go around that and on the other side of the water is a tower with a door. That's where you want to be.

Speaking of blackreach, was anybody else impressed with that place, I mean it's a cave that's as big as a freakin city. the amount of time spent on that place must have been huge

I definitely was, once I realized how absolutely massive it was. Its bigger than a number of cities.
it's awesome, until you shout at the big gold ball at the top and 3 dragons come down and own your ass.
