Apparently you haven't seen Black Swanagracer said:it's better than bringing galactic war over a piece of tail.....I remember reading RotS and got to the part where Anikan 'turned' to the dark side...I was thinking "are you kidding me...that's IT....he's trying to keep his woman alive based off the comments of a KNOW LIAR (Palpatine) saying he knows how to bring back the dead so he kills 1000's.....)Brian Earl Spilner said:

No, it probably won't be a franchise killer, because star wars is "too big to fail."Belton Ag said:You've made the claim on this thread that - beyond the apparent pressure Disney has placed on other media outlets to falsify their ratings for the film - the response to the film is "almost universally negative." That claim is bull***** It's not universally loved, to be sure, and it's falling below what they'd hoped, but it's not "universally negative." And it's not going to be some franchise killer.bangobango said:

I didn't notice that Holdo not only took out the Dreadnaught, but what? A half dozen or more other Star Destroyers? She just killed a TON of people with that maneuver. That's pretty impressive.
We've known for a while now that the Skywalker story arc was going to come to an end in Ep IX, so no matter what happened in TLJ, we know they won't have these characters to fall back upon. Knowing that, I'm not sure why you'd have the problems you describe in this post. Do you not like the Rey character? She seems to be very popular and they're going to lean on her pretty heavily in the next film. None of what has happened in the last two movies (in terms of their lives and deaths) has been a surprise, the only thing that was surprising was how Johnson handled Luke's story, which I admit was the weakest part of TLJ (crappy casino planet storyline notwithstanding).bangobango said:No, it probably won't be a franchise killer, because star wars is "too big to fail."Belton Ag said:You've made the claim on this thread that - beyond the apparent pressure Disney has placed on other media outlets to falsify their ratings for the film - the response to the film is "almost universally negative." But I don't think there is any doubt this movie turned away a lot of long time fans. Will they probably see the next movie? yes, because just like a ten novel book series you start reading, you really want to see how it ends even if the eighth book sucked.
But I think people were more invested in the Skywalker saga than Disney and Johnson realized.
They may backtrack from this after the reaction to this movie, but the way that they appear to be heading is that they want to capitalize on the Setting of Star Wars and not the cannon or history.
There will be a lot of people who watch Star Wars because it is Star Wars and they like the light sabers and the blasters, but I think there are a lot of people like me that once they move the story past the Skywalker trilogy we will lose a lot of interest. Maybe the younger generation will pick up the slack, though, who knows?
At some point in the near future they are going to make a movie that does not involve any of the characters or the history of the original trilogy. In fact, if they leave Luke dead and deal with Fisher off camera somehow, then the very next movie may be the first star wars film or television media that is not somewhat tangentially relate to:
Luke, Leia, Han, Vader, the Republic, or the Empire.
It will be a show that has to stand all on its own. At that point, I don't have near as much interest in the property as I did before.
Do you think the characters that they are creating in this new trilogy have the depth and the fandom to sustain the franchise going forward? Are you going to be interested to see a Finn prequel thirty years from now? Or a tv show featuring all the unseen battles between the Resistance and the First Order?
Are there any characters like Yoda or Obi Wan that their back story really intrigues you? That you want to see more of? Rose? Phasma? You think they will draw in viewers?
She is the least interesting main character Star Wars has ever had.Quote:

I think she's not super interesting right now. I think she will be super interesting in Episode IX.powerbelly said:She is the least interesting main character Star Wars has ever had.Quote:

Had that been Leia after doing a "force goodbye" to Luke when he was across the galaxy, says something like she will see Han soon, then closes her eyes and a flashback to the memories/millennium falcon kiss, and then peaces the fk out...
That'd have been the 2nd greatest moment in star wars history.
Instead it was just a top 10/top 5.
what a huge missed opportunity

I really do wonder if the phenomenon of Star Wars Fatigue is a very real cause here.
First off, whether there was a massive underground review rebellion or there's tens of thousands of Lucasfilm robots writing reviews out there doesn't really matter. The film is getting at least generally positive reviews, and box office and film quality have only ever been loosely correlated at best.
But if we go back to TFA, that film was an event . The first new Star Wars film in over a decade, new director, new characters, new worlds, coverage on every channel you can think of...the hype was just off the charts.
Even Rogue One was a pretty big deal, the first Star Wars spinoff. Would it be different, would it work? And most of us agree it was a pretty great success.
And now TLJ...the third Star Wars film in three years, along with animated series and video games and new toys and merch. I was certainly excited to see it, but there wasn't that crazy anticipation like there was for the others. And I'd imagine many other people felt the same way.
I hate to say it, but a Star Wars release just isn't quite as special as it was even a few years ago.
Agree. I might have teared up.Simplebay said:wangus12 said:

I guess we're forgetting another character from the Skywalker lineage who is still very much alive and is currently the main antagonist?Belton Ag said:We've known for a while now that the Skywalker story arc was going to come to an end in Ep IX, so no matter what happened in TLJ, we know they won't have these characters to fall back upon.bangobango said:

I think we are probably going to see the opening of IX with the end of a Funeral Ceremony for Leia.
Every Star Wars scene after the opening scrawl is in space focusing on a ship...
What if:
SCRAWL...
... PRINCESS LEIA HAS BECOME ONE WITH THE FORCE...
...SCRAWL
Pan down to show the Millenium Falcon attached to a very large asteroid by itself in space. The Falcon lifts off leaving behind a white cylinder on the surface of the asteroid with an inscription like "Leia Organa Solo, Rebel, Fighter, Princess..."
Zoom out as the Falcon lifts off to show that the asteroid is the largest in a field of asteroids of what was left of Alderaan...
Cut to Rey, Chewie, Finn, and Poe on the Falcon trying to decide where to go next..

It makes sense, even if this is all leading to Kylo Ren winning...bobinator said:
She has the jedi texts and there's clearly a hint at the end of The Last Jedi that there are people powerful with the force out there. Again, it would require a pretty big time jump before the events of the next movie start.
"It's been 10 years since the handful of rebels escaped from Scarif. Leia has been covertly scouring the galaxy trying to reorganize the rebellion. Rey has begun training a new generation of Jedi. The First Order hasn't given up the search, but with the death of Snoke was forced to focus efforts elsewhere...."
Something along those lines.
And I'm sure the galaxy's upper crust would immediately run down to the poopsmith chamber to gossip with the local stable boy....powerbelly said:
