Why wait till the deadline and pay a premium?

So do you think this puts a trade for Jose Quintana more in play? This draft should be a good restocking of the cupboard.

Something I read that makes me wonder.... do you think the cardinals knew this was going to happen, and signed Fowler because they knew they would lose the pick? I love Dexter, but was he with 17 million a year?

Pick No. 56 has a value of $1,122,400 and the 75th overall pick value has been set at $730,800, according to information obtained by MLB.com. That's an increase of the Astros' pool of just over $1.8 million, bringing their total pool for the top 10 rounds to more than $8.6 million. That would put them right outside of the top 10 currently in terms of pool money.

Very good question because we would have almost certainly got their 1st rounder otherwise.
It's been proven over and over that scouting/sabermetrics are more important than anything for building a great baseball team. The Astros have worked their @sses off to lead the way in some of these areas, predominately as I have mentioned many times, pitching injury prediction/prevention. Correa was able to look at all of this. All of it! Sig is the main guy in charge of the pitching injury stuff especially. The Cardinals effectively removed any advantage the Astros had over them in this department.shano0603 said:
From the reports I saw of the information they hacked, they didn't get much. But could you imagine if there were notes about a blockbuster trade and they used it to their advantage to make a better offer?

I am really happy that the Astros are being compensated because I fully expected them to only punish the Cardinals, but it still doesn't feel like $2 million is enough of a penalty.
Right, I should have worded it better. That was more of a complaint that the $2 million was the max.Ag_07 said:irish pete ag06 said:

This.
And 2M is nothing, but as mentioned earlier I think that's the max. Would have to think it'd be much more if it wasn't.
You think Quintana pulls Musgrove, Paulino, Tucker, and 2-3 other top prospects??? That'd be more than they got for Sale depending on what you call a top prospect.NotGibbs said:
So who would you give up then? Martes would be the centerpiece of the trade. If you're unwilling to give him up, you'd need to throw in probably 2-3 other top prospects, in addition to the already stated musgrove, k. Tucker, and Paulino
When you put it like that... no.NotGibbs said:
The astros offered Martes, Tucker, Musgrove, plus 2 more prospects for Archer. You think that with 2 more draft picks under the belt for the astros, they're getting Quintana for anything less? As I stated before, Martes is the centerpiece of a trade. You pull him out of the trade and those other prospects better be worthwhile
Our lineup this year definitely looks championship-worthy on paper.k20dub said:
So do you think we're a SP away from a championship? I guess it would depend on who that SP was.
Let's shut it down. Give the trophy to Boston, Chicago, or Cleveland. I don't know why anyone else is even going to try.Nuke LaLoosh said:
I've said it before and I'll say it again... "rolling with what we have" SP wise will not win us a championship.

I'd tell them they can have both draft picks. Since you can't trade picks, do a deal with 2 players to be named later and let them draft them. If that's legal.

ESPN saying that the Astros are being rewarded for bad security. Man, I hate that company.
At what point do you send McCullers to the bullpen so he stops getting hurt?W said:
I feel good about the team going into spring training.
I expect Keuchel to bounce back. And I share the concern that LMj will never make it an entire season.
the 'stros will have a chance to add starting pitching at the trade deadline. And maybe the 2 extra picks in the 2017 draft will give Luhnow flexibility to trade away a few top prospects
