If we get Beltran I fully expect us to swing Springer in a trade.

Suppose that would work. Didn't know McCann could play 1B.

McCann has played 124 innings at 1st Base. All with the Yankees.

We got Castro back from the twins already?

Something else I was thinking about. Let's assume that the Encarnacion deal is 5 years 115 million. Is there a downside to front loading that contract, say 30 million the first two years, 25 the third, and 15 the last two years? Since the Astros aren't in danger of the luxury tax this year, they could then free up payroll in the later years when Altuve and others become free agents. This would also allow the Astros to potentially get a better trade offer in year 4 or 5 should a team in contention need a DH. I know there have been a few contracts setup like this before, but I don't think there have been many.

Yep. And I wonder if it'll be front loaded with the opt-out clause that was so popular last offseason. If that was the case, he could have the opt-out after year 3. That frees him up to go sign somewhere else if he's still really productive. By that time, we will have figured out if AJ Reed was the real deal or not.

Spoiler alert:

He isn't.

Wow, how quickly AJ Reed has fallen in the eyes of Astros fans. A little over a year ago everyone was upset that he was not up in the Majors, and after less than a full season in the Majors, he has already been written off.

That's because if every prospect doesn't set the world on fire when they get called up, they're a bust.

I think people forget that AJ is just 23, and only played 53 games at AA before starting in AAA last year, where he wasn't exactly tearing it up before being called up. He struggled mightily in the bigs, but he's not a bust by any means yet.

What would really help AJ is dropping at least 25 pounds during the offseason. He's a professional athlete. He needs to start training like one and looking like one.

By that he meant.

That is the bomb he hit off of Lance this past year.

But I find this one more interesting.

According to ESPN Home Run Tracker this is only a home run @ MMP and no other ballpark.

He lost weight before last season. Maybe he's just one of those guys that plays better when he's bigger.... Look at CC Sabathia.

He was quite large last season and didn't perform well at all. He was listed at 275, which might have been a little kind. That's quite a jump from his 240 pound college days. I'd love to see the guy try to keep it around 250.

I feel like Encarnacion is using us to get as much $ as he can from Toronto. Hope I'm wrong.

I finally got to see him play on a regular basis. And he needs to (1) lose weight and (2) cut down his swing.

he's not going to make it with that big slow swing

Heyman's latest

Quote:

The Astros have a fantastic everyday team now, but a noticeably weak rotation that's short of hard throwers or experience. They do seem to be in an aggressive mode, with another attempt for Yoenis Cespedes. And the reality is, they need pitching more, much more. With Sale, they look like contenders, and maybe even the class of the AL West. Without him, they may not do much better than last year. Their system is down a bit, but if they'd give up Alex Bregman, they'd probably be in business. One rival brushes that off, saying, "The Astros are not trading Bregman, no way." We'll see.

The Yankees, Astros and Jays are thought to be among the teams in on Edwin Encarnacion, though reports of a deal in Houston were premature. Agent Paul Kinzer told me he and Encarnacion were in the D.R. at the time reports were suggesting they were in Houston. The Astros do seem to be aggressive, though Astros connected people were shooting down these reports, too. Kinzer mentioned there were "a couple other teams" involved, as well.

Solid additions that shouldn't strike out much. Waiting to see what we gave up for them before I put a grade on this one.

I'll have to disagree with him that we may not be any better than last year without Sale. We're already a much better team than last year. Even with our pitching woes, we missed the playoffs because our offense went through some terrible stretches and guys that were supposed to be big contributors, sucked.

At minimum, I think we're a 90-win team right now. Keuchel and McCullers are the key to being in the race for the wild card or the division.

I agree. The Astros can build an unbelievable package for Sale without including Bergman or Springer... they are just negotiating right now.

We can? Our farm ain't what it used to be.

Outside of Tucker, Martes, & Forest do we have any high end prospects? Forest isn't far enough along. He's only in rookie/low A. Tucker will likely just be getting to double A. Martes is the only near MLB level high end type.

Whatever happened with Riley Ferrell

iBrad

He had season ending shoulder surgery in May for an aneurysm. He's supposed to be fully recovered this year. In his brief work in A ball, he's done well. Over the month he pitched last year, he really cut down on the walks that plagued him his senior year and first stint in the minors. I wouldn't be surprised if he was in the pen by the end of the season. I'd like to see him invited to spring training.
