If we get Beltran I fully expect us to swing Springer in a trade.

Suppose that would work. Didn't know McCann could play 1B.

Gattis and McCann can DH
Yep. And I wonder if it'll be front loaded with the opt-out clause that was so popular last offseason. If that was the case, he could have the opt-out after year 3. That frees him up to go sign somewhere else if he's still really productive. By that time, we will have figured out if AJ Reed was the real deal or not.Mr.Ackar07 said:
Something else I was thinking about. Let's assume that the Encarnacion deal is 5 years 115 million. Is there a downside to front loading that contract, say 30 million the first two years, 25 the third, and 15 the last two years? Since the Astros aren't in danger of the luxury tax this year, they could then free up payroll in the later years when Altuve and others become free agents. This would also allow the Astros to potentially get a better trade offer in year 4 or 5 should a team in contention need a DH. I know there have been a few contracts setup like this before, but I don't think there have been many.

That's because if every prospect doesn't set the world on fire when they get called up, they're a bust.rosco511 said:
Wow, how quickly AJ Reed has fallen in the eyes of Astros fans. A little over a year ago everyone was upset that he was not up in the Majors, and after less than a full season in the Majors, he has already been written off.
He lost weight before last season. Maybe he's just one of those guys that plays better when he's bigger.... Look at CC Sabathia.iBrad said:That's because if every prospect doesn't set the world on fire when they get called up, they're a bust.rosco511 said:

I think people forget that AJ is just 23, and only played 53 games at AA before starting in AAA last year, where he wasn't exactly tearing it up before being called up. He struggled mightily in the bigs, but he's not a bust by any means yet.
What would really help AJ is dropping at least 25 pounds during the offseason. He's a professional athlete. He needs to start training like one and looking like one.
I finally got to see him play on a regular basis. And he needs to (1) lose weight and (2) cut down his swing.rosco511 said:

I feel like Encarnacion is using us to get as much $ as he can from Toronto. Hope I'm wrong.

The Astros have a fantastic everyday team now, but a noticeably weak rotation that's short of hard throwers or experience. They do seem to be in an aggressive mode, with another attempt for Yoenis Cespedes. And the reality is, they need pitching more, much more. With Sale, they look like contenders, and maybe even the class of the AL West. Without him, they may not do much better than last year. Their system is down a bit, but if they'd give up Alex Bregman, they'd probably be in business. One rival brushes that off, saying, "The Astros are not trading Bregman, no way." We'll see.
The Yankees, Astros and Jays are thought to be among the teams in on Edwin Encarnacion, though reports of a deal in Houston were premature. Agent Paul Kinzer told me he and Encarnacion were in the D.R. at the time reports were suggesting they were in Houston. The Astros do seem to be aggressive, though Astros connected people were shooting down these reports, too. Kinzer mentioned there were "a couple other teams" involved, as well.

I agree. The Astros can build an unbelievable package for Sale without including Bergman or Springer... they are just negotiating right now.
