Astros sign Charlie Morton to a 2 year deal. Hopefully this is just long relief/fifth starter.

2 years, $14 million

Missed most of last year after tearing his hamstring.

I just never got the Beltran hate after 10 years and 2-3 teams later.

And I don't get why you guys wouldn't want to add a .295, 30 HR, 90 RBI bat to the lineup. Yeah he's a bit older, but numbers are just as good if not better than Cespedes and he's more likely to sign a shorter deal and not be on the books when the young core is due their money.

Buster Olney reporting that the Astros are expected to "make a big splash" this offseason. Insider article on ESPN. Sorry no link.

I'll believe it when I see it.

The Yankees and Astros are "at an impasse" in trade talks over Brian McCann, though Houston can certainly turn elsewhere in its hunt for catching help and general offensive improvements. The 'Stros were in on Kendrys Morales before he agreed to a his deal with Toronto, per Rosenthal

McCann + Beltran = "big splash? That's what the article is about.

http://www.espn.com/blog/buster-olney/insider/post?id=14964

Paraphrased:

  • Astros need to surround their young talent with veterans (perceived as desperately needing experienced players). Because of that, evaluators sense Houston will be among the most aggressive teams.
  • Astros are looking for LH hitters to balance the lineup & guys who have a good clubhouse reputation.
  • Houston is reportedly competing with the Yankees, Boston & Toronto for Beltran. Good hitter + no long term commitment + good with young players.
  • Houston is also in talks for Brian McCann, who is also good with young players & can help a pitching staff.
  • Imagine a lineup of: Springer | Bregman | Altuve | Correa | Beltran | McCann | Gurriel | Marisnick | Kemp

Marisnick or Kemp in the starting line-up. Meh.

Not ideal but even that's a huge upgrade over Castro and DH Gattis/Rasmus/whoever the dart landed on to DH any given night.

Think if he gets Beltran, McCann, plus a trade for a top starter I'd be alright.

We have two options...Sign a top end FA like Cespedes and essentially kiss the young core goodbye (at least a couple of them) or sign some tier 2 FAs like Beltran that come off the books before the young guys are due. We'll see how they play it.

Indeed. He throws a sinker, has a ground ball rate of 58.2% and his spin rate on his curve is top 5 in all of baseball. He profiles as the type of pitcher that fits well with our propensity to shift.

On the surface, it's a very ho-hum signing, but if Morton can stay healthy, he could be a solid fourth or fifth starter in our rotation, depending on how things shake out.

Hopefully he's not the only starter we add, but the free agent market for starters sucks so bad, I don't have my hopes up.

Trade idea:

Astros get: Chris Sale and Jose Abreu

White Sox get: Bregman, AJ Reed, Cameron, Frances Martes and Kyle Tucker

Who says no?

Stros say no first

Bregman is the deal breaker there.

I see Correa, Altuve, and Bregman as our untouchables. LMJ, Springer, and Reed would be tough to part with but for the right package I could be convinced.

Signing someone like Cespedes does not mean kissing your young core goodbye. At all. But it does mean pushing all your chips in - you lose a lot of flexibility.

Brian McCann and Beltran would represent the opposite end of that spectrum. Especially with what the greedy-ass Yanks seem to be asking for him.

Good article on Morton. I know he only had 4 starts last year but the velocity increase from 2015 to 2016 is pretty encouraging.

Charlie Morton doesn't move the needle much, but he's a good buy-low candidate. He could very likely be better than Fiers. Health is the #1 issue with him.

FWIW...Any of us are very likely better than Fiers.

So we got another fiers/fister. Sweet.
iBrad
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I'd take a Fister that doesn't collapse down the stretch or a Fiers who doesn't have the occasional abysmal start and be quite satisfied. If Morton can give us 26-30 starts with an ERA around 3.9, he'll be a steal. I think he's going to benefit from our shifts more than most pitchers would. He just needs to stay healthy. Maybe skip his starts if they fall in an NL park. We don't need anymore torn hamstrings running bases.

Morton isn't likely to be a big difference-maker, though. The success of our staff depends on Keuchel and McCullers. I'm okay with McHugh, Fiers, Morton, and Musgrove battling it out for 3-5. I think the potential is there for a solid backend. Its 1-2 that needs to stay healthy and return to form. If they don't, we damn sure better improve the offense.

At least he's not sitting 88 or 86 like Fiers and Fister.

And he hasn't thrown a slider since 2010. But that isn't the point. It's to show an increased velocity.
