Astros sign Charlie Morton to a 2 year deal. Hopefully this is just long relief/fifth starter.

I'll believe it when I see it.Gramercy Riffs said:
Buster Olney reporting that the Astros are expected to "make a big splash" this offseason. Insider article on ESPN. Sorry no link.
Quote:
The Yankees and Astros are "at an impasse" in trade talks over Brian McCann, though Houston can certainly turn elsewhere in its hunt for catching help and general offensive improvements. The 'Stros were in on Kendrys Morales before he agreed to a his deal with Toronto, per Rosenthal
Doesn't do it for me after all the big name trade/signings talk.Quote:

McCann + Beltran = "big splash? That's what the article is about.

Paraphrased:
- Astros need to surround their young talent with veterans (perceived as desperately needing experienced players). Because of that, evaluators sense Houston will be among the most aggressive teams.
- Astros are looking for LH hitters to balance the lineup & guys who have a good clubhouse reputation.
- Houston is reportedly competing with the Yankees, Boston & Toronto for Beltran. Good hitter + no long term commitment + good with young players.
- Houston is also in talks for Brian McCann, who is also good with young players & can help a pitching staff.
- Imagine a lineup of: Springer | Bregman | Altuve | Correa | Beltran | McCann | Gurriel | Marisnick | Kemp

Indeed. He throws a sinker, has a ground ball rate of 58.2% and his spin rate on his curve is top 5 in all of baseball. He profiles as the type of pitcher that fits well with our propensity to shift.Ag_07 said:bigbass1170 said:

On the surface, it's a very ho-hum signing, but if Morton can stay healthy, he could be a solid fourth or fifth starter in our rotation, depending on how things shake out.
Hopefully he's not the only starter we add, but the free agent market for starters sucks so bad, I don't have my hopes up.

Stros say no first
Bregman is the deal breaker there.
I see Correa, Altuve, and Bregman as our untouchables. LMJ, Springer, and Reed would be tough to part with but for the right package I could be convinced.
Signing someone like Cespedes does not mean kissing your young core goodbye. At all. But it does mean pushing all your chips in - you lose a lot of flexibility.Ag_07 said:aggie1906 said:Doesn't do it for me after all the big name trade/signings talk.Quote:

Not ideal but even that's a huge upgrade over Castro and DH Gattis/Rasmus/whoever the dart landed on to DH any given night.
Think if he gets Beltran, McCann, plus a trade for a top starter I'd be alright.
We have two options...Sign a top end FA like Cespedes and essentially kiss the young core goodbye (at least a couple of them) or sign some tier 2 FAs like Beltran that come off the books before the young guys are due. We'll see how they play it.

I'm one of those dumbass fans. Screw Beltran. I booed him when the yanks were in town this past year.

You ever changed jobs?
That's good... Because none of our pitchers ever get injured...irish pete ag06 said:
Charlie Morton doesn't move the needle much, but he's a good buy-low candidate. He could very likely be better than Fiers. Health is the #1 issue with him.
