I was under the impression Morton was a low 90's guy and used movement more than velocity for outs

He's a big arm, but he's had a bad injury history. Stuff is straight electric. He just has to stay healthy.

In other pitching news, McCullers gets his first start of spring today at 12

I've been a little surprised about the fact that there hasn't been a whole lot of excitement around Morton. If he can stay healthy, I could see him being our 3rd best starter

Nice. If he can stay healthy, may prove to be a much needed addition to our rotation

So basically our season rests on Morton and McCullers staying healthy. Keuchel returning to his Cy Young self. And a young starter being solid? Awesome.

I've seen it mentioned that the ST gun may be a little hot.

Even if he's "only" hitting 95, that's damn good.

No. We had a worse offense last year with as poor pitching and were still in the mix. We get similar results pitching with our improved hitting and we still have a good shot at playoffs. This is why so many of us wanted to go get another high end starter in the offseason.

I'm looking past just the playoffs. I don't think we make it far inthere if those pitchers I stated don't do well.

If any team's top 3 starters don't do well in the playoffs then they'll lose.

Problem is, we all know our guys are less of a sure thing than, say, what Boston or Cleveland is running out there. I 100% believe Dallas (he's done it) and Lance can go toe to toe with anyone in the playoffs, but a betting man would take Sale & Price because they've done it longer and more recently.

Price is in the playoffs of late has been pretty bad. Wouldn't mind facing him in a game two one bit.

Charlie Morton ain't making or breaking this season.

If he works out and is a solid middle guy it's great. If he ends up a dependable back end starter it helps. If he doesn't pan out we stick a young guy in there and he's no worse than what Morton was giving us.

With that said if LMJ and Dallas improve slightly with this offense we'll be scary. If they meet their potential well be at worst the 2nd favorite to take the AL.

A healthy McCullers and Cy Young Keuchel and I think you have the best 1-2 punch in baseball. Even over the likes of Sale and Price.

I'm an Astros homer, but let's tap the brakes on that statement.

2 IP, no hits, 3 Ks for Lance today

Sale is outstanding so I'll concede there, but I believe Price is more hype. Keuchel at his best is as good or better than Price at his best, and Price struggled last year and in playoffs last several years. McCullers when healthy has shown the ability to dominate like Sale. I'm playing the hypothetical game here.

Price is one of the most over-hyped pitchers in recent times.

he's been on 4 different teams in the past 3 years. Another one of these guys that everybody wants...and then after they have him...okay with letting him go

Look, McCullers staying healthy has yet to be done, but I don't think he's far off in that assumption. McCullers ceiling is sky high if you dig into what he's done for how young he is. His career FIP is 3.16 in 2 shortened seasons at age 21 and 22 (pitching while injured for much of one of those seasons).

Him staying healthy for a complete season and doing what he's already done makes him a top 5 guy in the MLB.

But, like I said, he has yet to do that. Doesn't mean that's not within his grasp though.

Price is a solid starting pitcher that has proven to be extremely durable. I'd love to have him in our rotation. His down year last year would have still made him our ace.

He just hasn't fared well in the playoffs. I don't know if it's fatigue or the pressure, but he just hasn't been a good postseason pitcher. He'll still help you get there, though, which is hard to say about a guy like McCullers until he pitches an entire season.

The biggest thing I like about Morton is that he gives the rotation another hard thrower.

Anyone notice that we scored two runs off Jordan Schafer today? Yes, that Jordan Schafer. He had actually worked three scoreless innings prior to today, striking out five. He pitched 49 innings in the minors last year posting a 3.83 ERA. I had no idea he had transitioned to the mound. He also has three plate appearances this spring.

It would be interesting to have a lefty reliever that could also serve as a defensive replacement in the outfield, a pinch runner, and an occasional pinch hitter.

A national league team could use a player like that to face non consecutive lefties theoretically.

Man LMJ looked pretty nasty today.

I saw that he also mentioned the chemistry he's already built with McCann. Says he enjoy throwing to him and they've worked well to gather so far.

More like if Marisnick could be a lefty reliever. Then we could carry an extra bat.

AJ Reed could be our candidate for this job. Had a career 2.83 ERA at Kentucky.

No shlt. All the major league talent is off playing in the WBC. So for now I fully expect them to rake.
