Why wait till the deadline and pay a premium?

So do you think this puts a trade for Jose Quintana more in play? This draft should be a good restocking of the cupboard.

Would make a great 30 for 30: "Correa, Quintana, and Correa Bring a World Title to Houston"

I'd tell them they can have both draft picks. Since you can't trade picks, do a deal with 2 players to be named later and let them draft them. If that's legal.

Something I read that makes me wonder.... do you think the cardinals knew this was going to happen, and signed Fowler because they knew they would lose the pick? I love Dexter, but was he with 17 million a year?

Very good question because we would have almost certainly got their 1st rounder otherwise.

Pick No. 56 has a value of $1,122,400 and the 75th overall pick value has been set at $730,800, according to information obtained by MLB.com. That's an increase of the Astros' pool of just over $1.8 million, bringing their total pool for the top 10 rounds to more than $8.6 million. That would put them right outside of the top 10 currently in terms of pool money.

I think they should be stripped of more picks and given less of a money pool. I don't think their punishment was strict enough.

From the reports I saw of the information they hacked, they didn't get much. But could you imagine if there were notes about a blockbuster trade and they used it to their advantage to make a better offer?

It's been proven over and over that scouting/sabermetrics are more important than anything for building a great baseball team. The Astros have worked their @sses off to lead the way in some of these areas, predominately as I have mentioned many times, pitching injury prediction/prevention. Correa was able to look at all of this. All of it! Sig is the main guy in charge of the pitching injury stuff especially. The Cardinals effectively removed any advantage the Astros had over them in this department.

I am really happy that the Astros are being compensated because I fully expected them to only punish the Cardinals, but it still doesn't feel like $2 million is enough of a penalty.

This.

And 2M is nothing, but as mentioned earlier I think that's the max. Would have to think it'd be much more if it wasn't.

Right, I should have worded it better. That was more of a complaint that the $2 million was the max.

Also, I am now all in on trading for Quintana. This front office has shown many times what it can do with multiple picks and a larger draft pool.

Edit... As long as they don't get Martes.

So who would you give up then? Martes would be the centerpiece of the trade. If you're unwilling to give him up, you'd need to throw in probably 2-3 other top prospects, in addition to the already stated musgrove, k. Tucker, and Paulino

You think Quintana pulls Musgrove, Paulino, Tucker, and 2-3 other top prospects??? That'd be more than they got for Sale depending on what you call a top prospect.
NotGibbs

The astros offered Martes, Tucker, Musgrove, plus 2 more prospects for Archer. You think that with 2 more draft picks under the belt for the astros, they're getting Quintana for anything less? As I stated before, Martes is the centerpiece of a trade. You pull him out of the trade and those other prospects better be worthwhile

When you put it like that... no.

But to be fair, the Rays are absolutely nuts for turning that down unless they are dead certain he bounces back. 3 consensus top 50 MLB prospects along with two more. That's almost what Boston gave up for sale.

I think they're hoping Archer bounces back or they were holding out for Bregman. Archer was rocking over a 4 (and almost a 5) ERA for all of last season. They have an emotional attachment, because that's probably more than has ever been traded for a 19-game loser in the history of the game. I know in SABR that W-L isn't everything but it's still something given his ERA.

This off season didn't lend itself to getting SP help. Clearly a sellers market but I think they're overplaying their hand hoping someone gets desperate at the deadline.

I'd rather roll with what we have and wait and see. If two months into the season Lance is consistent and Keuchel returns to form, all of a sudden the need isn't as urgent.

With the extra draft picks this year, maybe you throw in Forrest Whitley. I'd hate to lose him, but he's further away and can be more easily replaced by this year's draft than a guy like Martes who is on the cusp of the big leagues.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... "rolling with what we have" SP wise will not win us a championship.

So do you think we're a SP away from a championship? I guess it would depend on who that SP was.

Our lineup this year definitely looks championship-worthy on paper.

I understand that people want pitching, I do too. But it feels like Nuke is saying to pay whatever the White Sox want for Quintana. Sure as hell don't wanna pay that much for Archer just to hope that yet another pitcher bounces back. It was just a crappy offseason to need pitching. People already seem resigned that we're going to suck or something.

No matter who we would get at SP, we need Keuchel to bounce back and Lance to stay healthy to make a legit run. I think Martes helps us this season. You can't view this as only one year window.

Let's shut it down. Give the trophy to Boston, Chicago, or Cleveland. I don't know why anyone else is even going to try.

It's a long season. Do t give up hope before pitchers and catchers even report!

I know it sucks and I know it's not what we all want to hear, but the chances of LMJ staying healthy are pretty f-in slim.

He hasn't had a year yet where he hasn't missed significant time.

I'd count on Dallas bouncing back but I'm going into this season counting on LMJ missing some time. To me it's a matter of when not if. That's why I see the need for a SP to be pretty significant and I'd rather do it now before he goes down and we lose any bit of leverage we have.

Do it now with the new draft picks and go into the season with an abundance of pitching. This way if it comes down to it we'll have 2 top notch pitchers all year long. If everyone comes back strong and stays healthy we'd have one of the best rotations in the league to pair with a stout offensive lineup.

Let's make it happen!

Almost positive a PTBNL has to be on your roster at the time of the trade.

I disagree. I think our roster today can make the playoffs. What happens in the playoffs depends largely upon LMJ and Keuchel. They could be one of the top 1-2 combos in the playoffs and lead us to a championship. Or, LMJ could be hurt and Keuchel could still be struggling.

Adding another quality starter would greatly improve our chances due to the uncertainty atop the rotation, but I don't think it's a must. It really just depends on the risk you want to start the season with. But adding a guy like Archer or Gray is full of risk, as well. Quintana is the guy that makes the most sense, but I don't see us meeting the White Sox's demands.

I feel good about the regular season. Our offense should carry us and we have a lot of capable arms to fill in as needed. It's the playoffs that concern me. If we don't make a deal this offseason, I think one at the break is highly likely, depending on how our starters look and how Martes and Paulino are performing in the minors.

He brought it up during the initial investigation so I really think he's just trying to sling dirt.

I feel good about the team going into spring training.

I expect Keuchel to bounce back. And I share the concern that LMj will never make it an entire season.

the 'stros will have a chance to add starting pitching at the trade deadline. And maybe the 2 extra picks in the 2017 draft will give Luhnow flexibility to trade away a few top prospects

Exactly. Which is why I think now is the time while we don't seem so desperate and we can have our new piece all year long.

At what point do you send McCullers to the bullpen so he stops getting hurt?

What he did was essentially corporate espionage. If it were a multi-million dollar company it would be a huge deal. He wasn't just some bored hacker who stumbled into some info on accident.

He did some really bad shlt.
