I know it's a hypothetical, but good grief...Stephenson + Beverley + Howard + Harden would be like a basketball version of the '93 Oilers. A talented team absolutely devoid of real leadership. All that would be missing is to hire Ron Artest as an assistant coach and have him take a swing at McHale during a game.
If we match Parsons we basically have 0 cap room for 3 years. If we arent able to sign a good player prior to matching Parsons, we are stuck with this 1st/2nd round exit team for that entire time. We need a young guy with a bunch of potential or we arent getting any better. I think Stephenson is probably our only choice. If we match on Parsons without bringing in another player, Morey is going to have to pull off a magical trade to make us better. Unfortunately we no longer have any bargaining chips.

The Rockets need to add a perimeter defender and develop the young talent that they have.

Ariza is a downgrade from Parsons. Coming off the bench would be good though.

Paying Ariza has not proven to be a good strategy in the past either. He plays for contracts.

Then who do you want to sign in order to use the cap space if you wanna bring Parsons back? Stephenson? Ariza can play SG too and I like him more than Stephenson.
Stephenson is a better player than Ariza. He's just kinda crazy. And he plays SG as well.
Ariza would have to mean no more Parsons. You don't tie up that much money to those two players.

Is the Asik deal finalized? Because now I'm thinking we may want to keep him as a backup. Dumping him for Bosh was a no brainer. Now without Bosh I think we ought to keep him this year

None of these people are that actually good. Their efficiency numbers, winshares, and wins produced make them all look like league average (or below) players at an easy position to fill.
Ariza is career 14.0 PER and a dismal .096winshare/48. Last year he went barely above average 15.8 and a respectable Parsons like .141/48. I only have a two seasons of data in wins produced and that makes him look good: .234 winsproduced/48.
Deng has a career 15.8 PER and a respectable .120 winshare/48. Last season that declined to 15.2 and .098/48. Deng's 2 season average is .115 winsproduced/48.
Even if we ignore the first two seasons of Lance's crazy career, we see that he's a below averager 13.4 PER and average .123 winshares/48. Lance has a nice .213 winsproduced/48 over the last 2 years.
Parsons last two year split is also pretty unimpressive. PER of 15.6 and .126 winshare/48. Parsons put up a .149 winsproduced/48 in the last 2 seasons.
None of these people should be getting anywhere near the money they want. Sign any of them for 2 years max and if they all go other places, so be it. We're not winning a title with any (or any 2) of the above players added to what we've got. A restful season for Howard and Harden and try again next offseason.

You can use the mle if you match Parsons.

If Lance is getting Max money, who can we even get for the MLE? Raef Lefrentz or Pooh Jeter?
Eh, the wins shares and other metrics are great and all, but I'm more interested in need and fit. Casspi is not a good overall player, but he is nice as a stretch 4 on occasion. Stephenson would fit Jeremy Lin's old role well. We have shooting off the bench with Canaan and Daniels. We don't have defense or energy.
Switching Lin with Stephenson is a plus, but the problem is Stephenson thinks he's worth way more than he is, plus he needs a strong locker room. Develop the young guys, let the players gel together, and be patient. Continuity is good for building a team. Stop trying to build through free agency and start drafting and developing well.

Drafting and developing takes time and Houston needs to contend in the next two years or I bet harden and Dwight get really restless

We won 54 games last year with an incredibly young roster. If they can make some smart, albeit not "impact" moves, to supplement the improvement they should see in the young guys and continuity, and they are still contending.
