GS, I'd like to think the Mavs are more concerned with winning a championship than with specifically beating Houston. The Mavs are capping themselves at second round exit - at best - with that roster.

They were a game away from beating the NBA champions last year and have upgraded their roster.

San Antonios effort in that series was laughable

But Cuban is overpaying him on purpose to force Houston's hand and he got it done before the signing period so Houston would be on the clock immediately to wrap up the trades to move Asik/Lin and clear cap space.

And paying 15mm for Parsons is a tough choice for Houston because he isn't worth it and Cuban knows that, but Houston also won't have the flexibility to surround Bosh/Howard/Harden with depth without retaining Parsons. So now Houston is in the Luxury tax, and I don't think Les has ever allowed them to be in the luxury tax.

All of the other stuff is esoteric. He wanted Parsons and made it difficult for Houston to match. That's usually how it works when a team extends an offer sheet to a RFA. I don't think he made a genius move or anything like that. It's no different than Charlotte offering Hayward a max contract.

Looked it up and Les Alexander has let the Rockets go into the luxury tax once. Yao's last season (2010-2011) when he played 5 games and Houston had KMart, Scola, Lowry and Battier. Houston paid 750k in luxury tax.

Only teams that have paid less in luxury tax since it started after the 99 lockout are:

Charlotte, Washington, OKC, Golden State, New Orleans (all with $0) and Detroit, who paid about $500 less.

And how has that worked for them?

Well, Houston has been profitable, but they haven't won. So depends what success is for you. Clippers have been much more profitable and have won slightly more (but still nothing significant) than the Rockets over the same time.

Also, going into the tax once is fine but if your roster is built to take the repeater tax every year to try to win then it isn't worth it anymore.

It may be done billionaires money but even prokorov (nets owner) is bound to not be happy about $144 million lost last year.

The new taxes make teams not want to pay it. Only 5 teams paid luxury tax last year.

Nets, Knicks, Heat, Clippers and Lakers. Clippers only paid 1.3 and Lakers only paid 8.9.

Compare that to the last year before the lockout when 11 teams paid and all 11 paid at least 3mm while 5 paid 11mm or more.

Worst thing for Houston now would be for LeBron to drag out the decision a day or two.

Told strongly that Chris Bosh hasn't made any contingency decision w/Rockets, & "whatever is being reported in that regard is simply false."

@SpearsNBAYahoo: detail of the offer sheet Parsons is signing with Mavs is it includes a trade kicker, sources said.

What exactly is a trade kicker?
Diet Cokehead
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's a clause that if a player is traded, his salary increases by a certain %. Basically, it makes players untradeable unless they agree to it.
Ganondorf

Trade kicker is bonus in the event they are traded. By not waiving a kicker in your contact you can veto trades to other teams if they don't want to honor it.

So we CAN afford Bosh & Parsons, but will have pay the luxury tax, correct?
exp

That's correct. Bosh has to be signed first, but yes.
Guitarsoup

Parsons+Bosh puts the Rockets around 80mm. Luxury tax is around 76mm. Salary cap is 63. Rockets wouldn't be able to do much more this year.

The question is how deep will Les go the next two+ years to keep the Rockets moving in the right direction.
Diet Cokehead

The repeater tax is going to be absolutely brutal for Houston starting next year after they have to pay Beverly if they also pay Chandler. Somehow, I can't see Les being cool with spending $100M in taxes each year when he has been adverse to the old traditional luxury tax in the past.

Here's an interesting article on the repeater tax

Dirk offered a max contract by Rockets. LOL.

Larry Coon saying on Twitter the Rockets must get rid of Beverly or they cannot offer Bosh the max.

Clutchfans seems to back that up saying they can only offer Bosh $19M if they keep Beverly.

Beverley. DMo AND Jones.

The Rockets would also need Parsons’s cooperation to make all this work. If he signed an offer sheet with another team, the whole plan goes up in smoke. The second he inks a four-year, $40 million offer sheet with a rival, his cap hit jumps from that $2.73 million figure to the first-year salary of that offer sheet — something in the range of $10 million. Bye-bye, cap room. It would be tremendous entertainment to see a team do this just to screw the Rockets. Don’t dismiss that possibility.

This explains the cap hold amount for RFAs. His cap hold is still the qualifying offer until the Rockets officially match or renounce him, not his offer sheet with the Mavs.

It still puts the Rockets in a tight spot if LeBron doesn't make a decision by this weekend, and Bosh insists on waiting until then.

It's certainly going to be very interesting to see how all the salaries work. Also I don't why Coon is saying they dump Beverley over Canaan. The salary difference is a smidge under $100K.
Sher Thing
How long do you want to ignore this user?
From Larry Coon twitter:

So let's do some math. Suppose Houston dumps Lin & Asik with $0 coming back. They renounce Daniels, Garcia & Hamilton. They waive Casspi, Beverley, Covington & Powell. They keep QO to Parsons & Capela's draft rights. They have Dwight, Harden, Jones, Motiejunas & Canaan.

With that configuration, they can give Bosh $16,427,992. Pretty short of his $20,644,400 max.

So let's renounce Capela & Parsons. Cap room rises to $19,279,451. STILL short of a max offer, and they don't have rights to Parsons.

To keep Parsons' rights & still sign Bosh to max, they have to dump another $3,732,744 in guaranteed salary. That's Jones AND Motiejunas.

So to get Bosh at max AND keep Parsons, Daryl Morey just needs to dump Asik, Lin, Jones AND Motiejunas with no salary coming he other way,

Does anyone thing that Houston won't match Parsons and let him walk?
Ryan34

If they trade Canaan, they wouldn't need to waive Beverley.

Would be one of the stupidest things I have ever seen considering they could have had him for ~$950,000 next year lmao.
