So that pretty much ends the Rockets offseason. Fair to deem it a failure now?

Only because of the insane success of the past 2 offseasons the Rockets had could you say this was a failure in comparison. But on the whole, it was not a success or failure. We are put in a position to get better, moreso than we were before the season ended. The only downside was that we could have had Chandler for 1 more year for under a mil. Other than that, we are set up nicely with Ariza and room to get another super star in the next couple years.

It wasn't ideal, but I wouldn't say failure. Still will be able to compete in a tough western conference.

Compete? Yes. Contend? No.

We would have been hardly any better had we kept Chandler. To "contend" we need someone much better than him. So we are better off in the long run.

It will be interesting to see how Ariza does. This time he isn't our #1 guy so he has less pressure on him than his last go around. Our bench could use some veteran leadership though.

not meeting expectations =/= failure. Failure would've been adding Ariza. Losing Asik really hurts.

Yea, I really think we're going to miss Asik.

Not a horrendous offseason. If they had kept Parsons at 1mm and still managed to dump Asik and Lin's contracts while bringing Capela over and maybe bringing in one more strong rotation guy, it would have been a great offseason. This would be year two with a very solid core and some decent young pieces around them.

Did anyone see this:
quote:
Simonas Baranauskas @LithuaniaBasket

D-Mo on relationships with Howard and Harden: "Hi & bye. They even eat separately from the team. Usually in some fast food place."

First though: Based on the uniforms, I bet the fast food place is McDonalds.
Second thought: I assumed that Harden would eventually come under fire for his eating habits, but I didn't think this is how it would go down.
Third thought: There seems to be a lot of smoke around these two guys being arrogant d*****bags. If they really are, then it makes more sense that Morey keeps swinging for the fences to out-talent everyone for a year or two instead of building a perennial contender around Howard/Harden, who don't make Houston a very attractive situation to take a little less money in exchange for great culture and winning.

I just saw that as well. Way too much smoke out there about Howard and Harden being awful teammates.

quote:
In an interview with Lithuanian journalist Simonas Baranauskas, Houston Rockets center Donatas Motiejunas said that both Dwight Howard and James Harden eat separately from the team and are short with other players, only giving "hi" and "bye" greetings with little fraternization.

Howard and Harden are the two superstars for the Rockets, and according to teammate Motiejunas, they act every bit of it in the locker room. This would seem to be out of line with Howard's MO as a superstar, the always-smiling big man fervently trying to get anyone and everyone to like him and buy into his personality. The case for Harden seems a little more believable, as his exterior persona to this point seems to be one more concerned with being social at the club rather than at the gym.

For Motiejunas, it isn't quite clear what this does to his tenure with the Rockets. He has already made comments this year concerning the handling of Rockets restricted free agent and Dallas Mavericks signee Chandler Parsons, saying Houston was forced to let him walk in order to keep Harden happy. GM Daryl Morey has been looking to trade him since at least January when the 23-year-old Lithuanian requested a trade due to lack of playing time.

quote:
Actions speak louder and words, and now both point toward the two stars feeling as though they're the key pieces in Houston. Not only has Harden verbally referred to the rest of the roster as less important than himself and Howard, but he's acting like it by separating himself and his star teammate from everyone else.

As anyone who's ever taken part in communal mealtime knows, eating food is a great time to bond. Conversations abound, secrets are shared, jokes are had and it's easy to get to know one another.

It's significantly harder when, as Motiejunas puts it, the two key players just say hi and bye.

The Rockets are primed to enjoy a competitive season, even if they've taken a slight step backward in the brutally difficult Western Conference. However, it's not exactly a secret that chemistry matters in the NBA.

If that chemistry blows up, the step won't be slight.

Whether Houston is trying to compete this season or attempting to lure in more key pieces during future free-agency periods, a culture change may be needed. At the very least, a mentality change must happen for two big-name players.

Bright side: Dwight and Harden seem to have great chemistry.

I'm curious to see what players like Beverley and Jones feel about Dwight and Harden. Parsons and Harden have reportedly made nice during the Team USA camp and he seemed to enjoy all of his teammates while he was here. I don't doubt that Dwight and Harden would isolate themselves though.

Just signed Greek forward

We reportedly offered him a 2 year, $4 million contract a few weeks ago. He turned it down, so we now gave him a $4.8 million salary next year with a $4.6 million option for the following year. Pretty big jump in salary from the initial offer. We used the rest of our MLE to sign him.

A lot of good points here to make me optimistic for next season. The only thing that still worries me is if Canaan, Daniels and D-Mo can be consistent throughout the year into the playoffs.

Lucky he didn't get hurt. Time to amend Harden's contract to forbid him to ride Segways.

Hopefully he can use that type of quickness and reflex to play a little bit of defense.

Kings announce Houston trade that lands them Gee, Hopson & - last but not least - trade exception in exchange for Jason Terry & two 2nds.

Exception, I'm told, worth $5.85 million and one of largest in the NBA. Third, perhaps, behind Minny's K. Love & Rox' Jeremy Lin exceptions?

So I have to root for Jason Terry now?
