ooof.. for some reason i thought they were out.
oh no said:there are so many quality players up and down Portugal and France's best 11 in addition to Spain and Germany. Even some squads like The Netherlands, who didn't even make it to the round of 16, has a bunch of quality. It just goes to show you that some of these smaller baltic states, with less quality but with counters and different playing styles, and with effort and luck, can compete and even beat some of the best sometimes.Dre_00 said:
My biggest takeaway from this Euros is that there are 2 elite teams in Europe and then a bunch of teams that are way behind. Maybe Portugal makes it 3 or I guess at worst there in a tier by themselves between Spain/Germany and everybody else but I'm still not sold on them.
To be fair, there are really only a handful of elite teams around the world at any given time. Besides Spain and Germany, Brazil and Argentina are pretty much guaranteed to be elite. France should be in that bunch but are playing poorly at the moment. So what's the point? It is interesting and entertaining to watch all of these teams play and see what happens on the pitch. Styles can clash and produce an unexpected result (MX v Bolivia, for example). I do find it interesting that a team like Argentina, which plays a highly technical, what I would call a pretty game, can CONCACAF it up when necessary. I'd like to see the US learn that because I think it would really help when the Euro-based players show up to play international matches against teams filled with MLS, Liga MX, etc players. ***Sorry for the thread derail***Dre_00 said:oh no said:there are so many quality players up and down Portugal and France's best 11 in addition to Spain and Germany. Yeah, it's one of the defining characteristics of international football. The football is often worse which ultimately makes it better. You're at the mercy of lady luck a bit more at the international level and you're exposed a bit more if your manager is average at best.
We may be wishing we had Pepe starting at CB for usQuote:
as many young stars that portugal has in their sqaud, how is it they still start 41 year old pepe at CB?
He would most likely miss.Project Gemini said:
I wish Ronaldo delivered a free kick that hard to Bruno's whiney **** face.
their nil-nil draw with England the other day was just defend and counter.. and they are good defenders.Project Gemini said:
I dont think I have watched them before. Is this direct counter attack their normal tactic or is it just a product of the opponent they are playing? Its kind of fun to watch
But I thought everyone said Portugal is the most selfless team at this tournamentOregonAggie said:
Glad to see Ronaldo's ego isn't getting in the way of being a team player
He's still got a lot of skill, but he's definitely slow and selfish and that combo is hurting his team.Milwaukees Best Light said:
Ronaldo is terrible. Hope they lose so I don't have to see his stupid face anymore.
Their best player is Sesko so it makes sense to counter and try to get him 1v1 with a defenderoh no said:their nil-nil draw with England the other day was just defend and counter.. and they are good defenders.Project Gemini said:

...but when USMNT played them in a friendly months ago and lost to them, I think they had more possession.
