Yeah, it's one of the defining characteristics of international football. The football is often worse which ultimately makes it better. You're at the mercy of lady luck a bit more at the international level and you're exposed a bit more if your manager is average at best.
Also, I think some challenges come when managing a team of elite players at this level.

But for players who are already getting a top salary at a top club, the risk of getting a career-ending injury outweighs any potential bump in pay they might get for doing well. I really do think some of the elite guys are only giving 80-90% effort. Toss in an uninspiring manager and/or a crappy tactician and you've got the makings for a mediocre-looking team.

To be fair, there are really only a handful of elite teams around the world at any given time. Besides Spain and Germany, Brazil and Argentina are pretty much guaranteed to be elite. France should be in that bunch but are playing poorly at the moment. So what's the point? It is interesting and entertaining to watch all of these teams play and see what happens on the pitch. Styles can clash and produce an unexpected result (MX v Bolivia, for example). I do find it interesting that a team like Argentina, which plays a highly technical, what I would call a pretty game, can CONCACAF it up when necessary. Yeah, true. I don't expect a dozen top notch teams or anything. But typically there's more than 2 in Europe alone. Traditionally strong teams over the last 10 years or so like France, Belgium, Netherlands, England all look extremely mid. Like that entire bottom half of the bracket is a bunch of crap and some alpine countries that are impressing but aren't like the aforementioned teams.
CR7 already missed two headers in front of goal and that FK at about 20 yds out. Hate to see it.

would think some of these guys, Leao, Jota, Felix, Bruno, etc. could find a way to combine and score without going through CR7.

This game is begging to end on a CR7 penalty miss. I will be really disappointed to see anything else.
