One thing that no one really mentions is that this England team has a lot of talent in the same positions but then like...no one in other positions. Some of that is through injury but some of it is the insistence to keep a very talented, say 3rd option in their position over a person who is the best or 2nd best option in their position but overall, less talented than the first.

England doesn't have a functioning left back. At least not one that actually prefers to play there and plays the majority of their time at left back. Literally, not a single one on their roster. They have exactly one (1) player whose primary position is left winger and yet he hasn't played a single minute in 2 games. So yeah, no **** the entire left side of your team is crap...you didn't bring anyone who actually wants or likes to play there and the one guy who does, you refuse to play.

In some ways, I get it. Southgate had to choose between naturally left sided players who had ****ty seasons and non-left sided players who had good seasons but drop off a lot when they play on the left. But he literally left himself with no naturally left sided players. it's just a super weird roster construction and then a really weird use of said squad.
