I'm not an England fan and thought they were pretty poor throughout the tournament, and probably deserved to get beaten in every knockout game through today, but…

Netherlands played well until they scored at 7' and then they seemed to say to think they could sit back for the rest of the game and let England back in. Spain doesn't play like that, Spain will just keep coming at them.birdman said:

1st half was definitely England's. They were much more dangerous and Dutch were sloppy. England could have easily been ahead at half time.
Koeman subs to start the 2nd half changed the game. England weren't nearly as dangerous and Dutch came into the game. Dutch were the better team until Southgate subs changed the game again. England weren't as dominant after his subs but they were dangerous in a different way and created two good chances...one of which fractionally offside and the other a goal.

Need an absurd and completely undeserved goal just to get to ET against Slovenia. Win on PKs. Win on an added time goal.

England has drawn a lot of criticism so far due to expectations/Southgate, but nobody in this tournament has been dominant. Germany might have beaten England if they were on their side of the bracket, but lots of flawed teams who have already bowed out.

I don't think anyone is arguing that there aren't other flawed teams in this tournament but Spain, Germany, Portugal...heck I'd even say France, Turkey, and Austria all were better/less flawed than England up to tonight. I mean my god England needed a 96th minute bicycle kick to take SLOVAKIA to extra time. None of it matters if they win it all but to suggest that they have somehow been at the same level as the vast majority of teams in the tourney is just crazy.
France was pretty flawed, imho. They only scored via PK until yesterday iirc. Spain has probably been the best team I've seen in the tourney.

To use a college football analogy, he's basically pre-MNC Mack Brown. Even if he finally gets a trophy, I won't think he's a particularly good coach.
After two days of no power or internet and very sparse cell service, I was able to get on a plane today and watch the first 70 minutes of the match on the plane.
England did finally play higher and a more direct and attacking style in the first half. Intl Foden looked like club Foden for 45 minutes. Saka and Mainoo looked good.
But I hated the goal Kane was awarded. He took his shot and missed it, and only after rolling around screaming like he lost a limb did they review and see that the end of his follow through barely caught the defender's attempt to block the shot, so they awarded England a free goal and the screaming murdered "injured" Englishman was magically healed and calmly scored the pen. FFS. give me a freaking break.
