I feel like England's starting XI was more a pick of who the best 11 players were not do those players complement each other.
Foden/Saka: both don't strike me as pairing up with a big, slow center forward who wants to link up in the middle. They both want space.
Bellingham/Rice/Gallagher: Starting 3 "8"s is an odd choice. Honestly I think starting both Rice & Bellingham is a bit of a waste. Adding in another central midfielder who isn't really known for great passing or space making and the problem is clear. This trio might be good at carrying the ball to the final 3rd but they aren't going to know what to do when they get there.
Back line. Eh. Trippier & Walker are 34 & 33 years old. If they do press forward they are going to eat into the space that Foden & Saka want for themselves.
I don't see how Grealish was left at home but a guy like Jarrod Bowen makes the team. Sure Bowen scored goals but that was more in a counter attacking setup, something England won't really be in.

I find it hard to believe that they actually got it that high.
I was looking through the shots on one site, and most of the xG from England was from a shot just before half where Gallagher tried to feed Kane right at the goal but was just a little bit ahead of him. If the pass connects, it would be a goal, but it didn't so it wasn't.
My biggest problem with Kane is that he doesn't really provide much besides being a target man. He doesn't press effectively, nor does he offer any real movement when in possession. He basically jogs in tiny circles between the two CBs.
In general, his abilities don't match the talent composition of the rest of the team. England has really good wide forwards and central attacking midfielders that can fluidly exchange positions. In my opinion they should play Cole Palmer or Ollie Watkins as a false 9 so they can take advantage of their strengths and become less predictable.

Kane is the best striker in the world and scored 40 something goals this year. If you can't build a team around him and Bellingham and score goals then you're doing something wrong. Southgate is the problem imo.
This is tricky, yes and no. Yes Kane is a great striker, but i don't think a team with Kane as a striker will be the best team. Kane went to Bayern and Bayern failed to win the bundesliga.Hey...so.. um said:

Southgate is a problem but Kane is not a Messi who you build a team around.
If I were southgate i'd say: I need Bellingham, Saka & Foden out there. Put Mainoo as the 6, Watkins or Palmer as the 9 and then maybe Gordon as a winger to slot Foden more to the middle.

Not arguing about that. Just saying Kane isn't a Messi level guy you build a team around. I see the other 3 as a better core group to build the team/style around.
Southgate is actually the problem. He is falling into the same trap as every English manager and picking players based on reputation and not chemistry.

The old "11 best" instead of the "best 11" argument shouldn't really matter all that much in terms of scoring a goal or two and beating Slovenia when looking at the quality of players across those two entire 26 man squads, IMO.

He was quoted as saying the players didn't really know what they were supposed to do so I guess that checks out. No clear direction for how to score goals.

Aside from the Dutch-Austria match, this 3rd round has been really terrible
