Just like Kiev / Kyev. They changed the way they wanted it spelled and pronounced in the west. Media follows change orders. Maybe one day, the masses will follow along too. Did you guys notice in these Euros that Czech republic was now Czechia?

When I was a kid people would say Chili for Chile but now we say Chilay.
All they're asking is for people to pronounce it in English similar to how they pronounce and spell it.
Yea it's not a hard concept. They want it pronounced correctly the way they say it.

This. Cote d'Ivoire did similarly a while back. Basically, the name of our country isn't English, so please stop translating for international broadcasts, etc.

One of my former business partners and good friends is from Istanbul. Good dude. He came over here at 18 on a scholarship to Lamar University and is now a permanent resident and has a slight Cajun accent.
I haven't seen him in a while but last I checked he was perfectly comfortable with the word Turkey.

We don't care, so it doesnt matter.
They do care what they are called, so thats why you hear announcers pronouncing it that way.

Common sense isn't too common around here sometimes.
Individuals can call nations whatever the hell they want. It's fine! People might roll their eyes at you but most will largely not care.
But institutions, like UEFA or the Olympics or the United Nations, will try to adhere to the wishes of the governments of their member nations. I don't get why this is confusing people.

I don't actually care either. I just think it's funny to think about an English speaker applying this concept to other languages.

I haven't been to Eindhoven other than just driving through. What I do know about Eindhoven are expat related suggestions from the expat group I belong to (think Tex-Mex that's actually pretty good as an example) and I'm guessing that's not what you're looking for.
If you're mobile I can recommend Maastricht and Aachen just across the border from Maastricht in Germany. They aren't that far away from Eindhoven.

If anyone is looking for additional soccer-related entertainment I highly recommend Captains of the World on Netflix. It covers the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. It follows numerous teams, primarily from the viewpoint of each captain. I'm not done with it yet but what I've seen so far is great.
Seems so weird without soccer on today.
