Question about Stag lowers: Since the actual lower it self is made by CMT for both RRA and Stag, is there any difference in the internal parts? Like I said I've always read good things about RRA, is Stag similar quality?

Yes, the lower parts kits are different in many cases but Stag and RRA both produce quality items.

I think Robbie uses RRA LPKs but you can get him or any assembler to tell you for sure.

So do you think I could buy one already assembled for $450?

Would getting the barrel without the front sight bring the price down?

I'm looking to make a varmint upper...not unlike the RRA Coyote.

I'm looking for someone who will do an FFL transfer in the Amarillo area. Since I don't live in Amarillo (about an hour away) I don't know any of the local gun dealers and I don't think there are any gun shops north of the Canadian River. I'm leaning towards the Gander Mountain in Amarillo as I have asked them about FFL transfer before and they said they did it and the fee was somewhere around $20-30 (of course the one in CS was cheaper... bizarre).

Well his website says specifically that he doesn't use the RRA parts kit on the lowers, he uses CMT parts. However he doesn't say anything about the Stag's so I assume those are factory assembled. There seems to be a universal instruction guide to building a lower on Arfcom so the parts really couldn't be that different. I'm just worried about final quality. Of course I'm not a real heavy shooter so I guess I don't have to worry about something breaking too quickly.

I also just found a Stag upper I really liked. Though its a bit more than what I would have spent on an RRA, it seems like a better deal cause it comes with a flip up rear sight, an M4 profile barrel, and apparently shipping is free. Anyone have any experience with Stag uppers? If I go with the Stag upper I'll definitely buy a Stag lower.

Me? Not for a couple of months. I've moved ahead with purchasing, I think I'll be happy with what I got.. that is if it doesn't take three months to get here.

You can't go wrong with Robbie. I've picked up several stripped lowers, mags, and parts from him in the last several years. One of the best, most reasonably priced dealers out there.

OK, looking at getting the Bushmaster ORC that Academy sells for $899. I have $500 in Academy gift cards and just sold my Beretta Brigadier pistol for $475 so that should cover it.

http://www.bushmaster.com/catalog_xm15_BCWVMF16M4ORC.asp

Admittedly, I know nothing about ARs. What are some "must-haves" for this set-up? I will eventually put an EOTech or something similar on it but also would like iron sights on it.
Log

IMO, I'd get a regular M4 version, since it will have the front sight tower instead of the chopped version the ORC has. If you use any kind of magnified optic, the front sight tower won't be visible, and if you use something un-magnified, the fron sight post should cowitnes with the dot or reticle in either your Aimpoint or EOTech, respectively. Plus, you can't really ever attach a BUIS to the ORC, since there is no provision for a front sight.

Additionally, there are much better mounting options than the risers on the ORC. Say you mount a scope in rings that attach to the risers. You've got three points of possible failure there: the screws that attach the ring halves, the bolts that attach the rings to the risers, and the bolts that attach the risers to the upper receiver. If you go with a standard receiver and taller rings, you end up with only two points of possible failure, or if you mount an EOTech or CQT with a built in mount you only have one point of possible failure.

Just my opinion.

I got a Stag Arms stripped lower a week ago as a gift. I knew relatively nothing about AR's up until then.

I have been reading all I can and am a little lost for now. But am anxious to get started building. As I dont live somewhere right now that is convenient to use it often for hunting, it will be a range gun. Maybe once I move I can a couple of others to suit different purposes. Who couldnt use a few extra guns around?

I think I was going to just buy a complete upper since I dont have any tools to put that together. But I wanted to go ahead and buy the lower parts kit now.

Does anyone have any suggestions on places to purchase this through, or brands, or any other tipis I might need in searching for the LPK? What I should expect to pay?

Adco firearms for a RRA LPK - $65

You will need a stock, buffer and spring as well.
They are anywhere from $40-400.

What are the advantages to billet uppers besides rigidity, or is it even that? Precision? I'm wanting to start putting some parts together for a 6.8 build and was thinking of starting with a VLTOR or LaRue Stealth upper rcvr and pairing it with a WOA 18" stainless barrel. I thought it would look nice and be different, thoughts?

I asked earlier, noone answered. Can anyone please tell me why this is about 70 bucks cheaper than anywhere else I can find? Am I missing something? Everywhere I have read states that aimpoint is solid, but is this a crappy version of one or something?

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/AIM11422-65789-2137.html

And if you don't think this one is good, would you recommend another red dot this price or lower please? Thanks.

The CompC3 is not a bad sight...its just a poor application on an AR.

The issue is the 2x magnification. Dot sights are fast becuase they have no magnification. You look past them, not through them...both eyes open, maintaining your maximum field of vision. The 2x ruins that... On the other hand, if you want magnification, 2x is about worthless. So there you go, a sight that noone wants... It likely is not as well built as the CompM's either.

In that price range check out the Burris products...speed dot or fast fire. I just picked up a Fastfire with the winged mount for $225 from Midway, I'm gonna try it on my SBR'd 9mm AR and my Krinkov.

For $100 more you can get an Eotech. Spend the money, you wont regret it.

Thanks! I didn't realize the 2x would be a big deal. I looked through the 3x ACOG and they're perfect. I will actually go the other way for now and try and find the best red dot for 100 dollars or so. Just got a really nice Larue scope mount as a gift, so I'll be using the 9x scope I've got.

TRIDENT has that sight on his 6.8SPC. I liked it. The 1MOA dot let us shoot dime sized groups at 50 yards. It would probably hold close to that at 100 yards. Out to 300 yards, it would be fine, but past that, the dot would be too big on the target.

Also, if you plan to co-witness with iron sights, the 2x will screw that up, too. You need 1x for co-witness. That's why I'm looking at either Mueller, Bushnell, or EoTech for mine when I get one.

Here's a link to the Mueller if you're interested. I emailed them, and they should have it in black (vs. camo) next year.

http://www.muelleroptics.com/products/MQS12233.html

What's the deal with the Vortex scopes? I haven't heard of them yet. Looks a lot like an Aimpoint, but a 4MOA dot? Isn't that kinda big?
