So, have an AR, but no ammo. Where's my best buy locally or online? I'm not picky.

Only problem is I don't believe I can shoot FMJ at Elm Fork or Garland Public where I shoot.

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/horizontal-pod.jsp?id=0022898&navCount=8&parentId=cat20839&masterpathid=&navAction=push&cmCat=MainCatcat20712-cat20726-cat20839_TGP&parentType=index&indexId=cat20839&rid=

This seems like a good buy?

Deatsman, I had heard that too, but their website still shows it is a "no no."

Nope, HP works just as well. I think the website is now outta date.

A phone call could confirm that.

I have a question about different calibers.

I have the CMMG bargain bin gun that came in .223 or 5.56. This seems to be the most common caliber. Is it possible to just buy another upper in a different caliber and use the same lower. The only problem that I could think of would be the where the magazine fits into the lower, but I don't know if they make adaptors to cover that problem. Thanks in advance.

Yes, quite a few rifle calibers run with same lower and a mag switch. Pistol calibers work as well but most require a mag well block to accept the smaller mags.

Caliber that only require an upper/bolt change out:

.204 Ruger
5.45mm
7.62x39(AK47 round)
6mmPPC/(BR maybe as well)
6.5 Grendel
6.8 SPC
300 Whisper
450 Bushmaster
.458 Socom
50 Beowulf

Question regarding the iron sights. I'm saving for a bargain bin gun and wanted to know how accurate (I know accuracy ultimately resides in the hands of the user) those sights are to 75-100 yards. It might be another 9-12 months after the rifle purchase before I can afford to add some optics and I was wondering how trusty the iron sights would be until that time. Or would I be better served to just wait and save all of it and purchase the rifle and optics all at the same time.

Irons will most likely be better than you can shoot.

2-3 inch groups should be attainable.

That's what I needed to know. Thanks again Deats for the help on these AR questions. Really a newbie to all this stuff. Been trying to read all the threads on here and spend some time on ar15 when I can on the weekends to gain knowledge. I think I'm about ready to pull the trigger (no pun intended) on the CMMG bargain bin purchase. I've read lots of good things about the Larue buis, so I think that's the direction I'm headed. I just can't justify dropping the money on optics right now, but I wanted to be able to practice and work with the AR while I saved up.

I've begun reloading. I frequently pick up spent brass and then have at it.

I've lowered the cost of rounds from .48 to .18 cents/shot.

While we're postin' pics...

Is this gun as overpriced as it seems? Roughly $2,800 for 6.8 SPC Barrett M468 w/ ARMS rail. I've shot one and was surprised at how heavy it was.

$2800 seems a bit high for an AR that doesn't sport a monolothic upper or piston driven action. I'm not a big fan of that particular Magpul stock, either.

For a 6.8, yes I think so. Barrett is proud of his guns.

FYI, the PADS rear flip sight has a loose retaining pin and I wouldn't spend the money on it.

We have been running them on our M4's and every single one of them has had a problem with the retaining pin slipping out and allowing the sight to flip up with a slight bump. Well our M4's get bumped a lot so the sight is flipped up all the time and won't lock down until you pull out a gerber or pocket knife and push the pin back into place. Not something you want to do while in a fire fight.

The range adjustment knob is also always off of zero and had to be put back even at the range when we were zeroing.

Here is a picture of the sight from RRA website.

I'm not a big fan of the PADS. Great idea, poor implementation. The most bullet proof BUIS out there is the Troy, but it suffers like many of them from a lack of range adjustment. Personally, I like the low profile ARMS on your pic. That's the one I purchased for myself to use in the AOR.

Looks like this kinda got ignored.

You can by a complete A3 upper from lots of folks.

Here's CMT at Bravo Company for $100

I would stay away from Model1Sales and DPMS. I am not knocking these guys but if you are going to build it yourself, using a little bit better part can save you a lot of headaches.

My new bargain bin rifle I picked up this weekend. My first AR purchase. Absolutely LOVE it! Just a really fun gun to shoot. DoubleStar lower...only blemish I could find was about a 1/8th inch scratch on the top rail. Now I can start saving up for all the extra cool stuff to go on it. Pretty sure I've come down with a nasty case of BRD.

Great gun for the price...brought it home for only $611 including the FFL fee and the 30 round mag.

Thanks to everyone that answered questions for me over the last couple of months...very helpful to a total newbie.

I got mine the other day also. It is a DS as well. I couldn't find any blemishes on it but I didn't spend a whole lot of time scrutinizing it.

One thing I have to do is clean it. Did yours come coated with machine oil? What are you thinking of purchasing? I got my CDNN catalog over the weekend and there are all sorts of goodies in it for the AR.
Dynastar97
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yep, mine needed a solid cleaning out of the bag it was shipped in. I wish it had come with a manual to help out when breaking it down to clean it...but I'm sure I can find that online somewhere.

I'd like to add a flip up BUIS. Then maybe a front rail system so I can attach a tactical light.

FYI, but the CDNN "goodies" are typically Chicom junk.

As far as breakdown/cleaning instructions, they should be pretty easy to find on AR15.com.

Where would you recommend finding a flip up sigbt and what brand/model would you recommend.

By the way you and your fellow addicts are primarily responsible for my recent purchase.

If you want rear flip up, the arms 40 line is the way to go.

Rear fixed, go with the Larue.

Any of the vendors on ARFCOM will have BUIS for roughly the same price. Top of the line flip-up right now is the Troy; fixed is the LaRue. Lots of people used the ARMS though, and, as stated, it's OIF approved.

Vendors I would recommend (since I have ordered from them before):

Bravo Company USA
ADCO Firearms
Global Tactical Supply
