Scratch that. She looked amazingly like a red X.

Centerpole90, I do not use my rifle in a combat situation, only hunting and target, so my head coming up is actually better as it is part of my transition to a standing/moving position and eventually an instinct, shoulder firing, shooting position.

Ill try and get some pics of her and my other squadmates shooting tomorrow. All I have is my iPhone so they might not be great but better than nothing.

Took some pictures Sunday morning with my phone. Only shot one stage on Sunday and it was pistol/shotgun so there are no AR pics for the AR thread.

Kay (Jerry Miculek's wife) shooting an open pistol.

Jessie shooting her limited Glock.

Jessie on the Benelli M2 shooting the second part of the stage.

Billy, Jessie's Husband, shooting an open gun. Billy has won several National championships in the Cowboy action shooting.

There are some pictures of me taken by some professional photographers that set up there on Saturday. They are also of a pistol/shotgun stage so no AR's to be seen except in racks in the background. These photographers, Photomotion, had two cameras set up taking 6 hi-res pictures a second and look good. They got 135 pictures of me in a stage that took just 20 seconds to shoot.

Shooting on the move right after the buzzer. There were 8 pepper poppers directly in front of the start box. Got 4 of them on the move in the few steps it took to get to the fault line, then took the last 4 standing.

In full recoil with two pieces of brass in the air. This was shot on the move and both shots were at separate targets.

Muzzle blast with slide just starting to come back.

Reload before I go low.

An awkward shooting position but a lot faster to get in and out of than going prone. After you are done shooting 8 shots at four paper targets you have to put your gun on safe and set it in the bucket before you move to the shotgun.

Going down prone with the shotgun hard. This was on Saturday so I had on my Adidas A&M polo.

Went prone on this part because I didn't have to get back up afterwards, to better control the recoil and get faster followup shots shooting the slugs, and the shotgun targets were a bit further away than the pistol. 6 slugs on 6 different targets.

A few more pics both from my phone and of me if anyone gives a crap.

I finished 17th in Tactical division out of 70 or so shooters. A lot better than I expected to do because this was the USPSA National Championships and I've never shot a 3-gun match of this size before. Only crappy thing was they gave trophies out through 16th place. I'd have done a few things differently if I'd have known I was going to miss out on a trophy by just that much.

At the Docter vendor table they had those LaRue mounts on scopes and they looked very nice. I also got a special edition LaRue armadillo for shooting the match.

You ever shot IDPA matches down at Impact Zone? A friend of mine was making some comments about 2 or so months ago about some younger guy who was cleaning up w/ a Beretta...not many guys shooting them in competition.

Yes I'm a member out at Impact Zone and have been shooting the IDPA matches there this year when I can. I'm the only person in the area I know of that shoots a Beretta competitively anymore. Let me know if you ever make it out to one of the matches there. The Comp-Tac match this Saturday should be interesting. Not really sure what kind of stages to expect from Gregg.

I've shot a couple of their Saturday 3 gun matches w/ my friend who shoots there weekly, but my work schedule keeps me from going to the Wednesday matches and most of the 3 gun matches here lately. I had seriously thought about doing the Comp-Tac shoot this weekend, but doing a ride-along shift w/ CSPD Fri night/Sat morning and don't want to drive down there after being up for 24hr straight...too dangerous for me.

Jessie is the Heat...

Great pics Lex. 3 Gun is very addictive. I passed on the Nats this year since we have a new baby and are going to the Arkansas State 3 gun at the end of October and Ft. Benning in December.

You should check out the Ark St. Championship. Very good match and the table is all prizes (no trophies, lots of guns). You can still get in and Ft Smith is only about 8 hours from Bryan.

I hate to say it, but the USPSA Nats are one of the least fun 3 Guns of the year. If you enjoyed that then you need to make Superstition or Rocky Mountian. You will be blown away...

I'll look you up next time I get down to the WHIDPA 3 Gun...Fall Saturdays are kinda busy for me...

PP

Oh, and you all looking for an alternative to the Dr. Optic should check out the Burris Fastfire. It will fit on any mount that the DR will. I have one and its a good sight for what it is.

I was already signed up for the Gator Classic the same weekend before I heard about the Arkansas State 3-gun match. Also I was out of the country when they opened up entries for Ft. Benning and wasn't sure I could make it. Didn't realize the match would fill up so quickly. Next year I'll make some of the other bigger matches.

I plan on making most of the monthly IDPA and 3-gun matches out at Impact Zone so anybody feel free to say hi if you see me. I'm not planning on getting rid of the Beretta anytime soon so I'll stick out.

Hey lex,
My friend that I shoot w/ down at Impact is the Webmaster for the WHIDPA page and says he talked to you down there one time. He was wondering if he could get your permission to put some of your photos of you at nationals up on their page since you are a member?

I'm pretty sure I know who your friend is then. Sure he can use them for the website. The photographers asked that they get credit if they are used anywhere. Just a caption saying they are by Photomotion Photography.

Yep Fred Q. I know who you're talking about. I've been meaning to make it up to Bryan to shoot one of your matches. I always end up getting pushed into going to NG when I go to BCS and am not in the condition to make it to the range the next morning. Make sure and let me know if you have another 3-gun or shotgun match up there.

Yep, he's the guy. I've shot his new AR. You talking about the one w/ the free-float tube and Burris on top? Hell of a trigger...

Edit: I know what you mean about the NG thing...
I live in town and don't make it for that reason. LOL
Then again, I'm a young gun who just turned 21.

What's the general opinion on the ACE Skeleton stock that comes on the Rock River Coyote rifle? I'm thinking about that for use on prairie dogs and hogs, and Champion Firearms in CS has it for $890, I think.

For that matter, what's the best (budget minded) choice for that use? I don't really want a carbine - I figure if I'm gonna pay for an AR, I want something I can use for longer range shots. I already have an SKS that works pretty well for short to medium range stuff.
lexofer
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
I've seen a lot of people running the ACE skeleton stock that seem to like it. If you want to hunt prairie dogs I'd definitely get a longer heavier barrel than what is found on carbines. An 18-20" barrel is good for all around use. The longer 24" barrels would be good if all you wanted to use the rifle for is to sit on a bench and shoot prairie dogs but would make it more difficult to use the rifle for other things.
tmanAg08
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Yeah, I still want it to be useful as a somewhat all purpose rifle. I'm leaning toward the 20". I'll probably stick a scope on it, but then get back up iron sights at some point, especially for shooting hogs with (I figure that'd be a lot easier to use when it's dark). Speaking of which, is there some kind of scope quick release that would let me keep it sighed in, and remove easily for using the iron sights?
lexofer
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
LaRue makes excellent scope mounts that have quick release levers that return to your zero. They are pricey but you get what you pay for and more.

The Ace is an excellent stock. I have had one on my 3 gun rifle for years...I had one when they were rare and cool...I guess I need to switch now. Its also the lightest stock you will find (the main reason its still on my 3 Gun rifle), light is good.

I just bought a UBR thinking it might be the next replacement for the Ace, but it's much heavier...I like it though, so it goes on my 11.5" 6.8...the weight balances the can on that rifle very well.

Thanks, lexofer. I knew of those, but didn't know if they worked well. Good to know.

What scope would you guys recommend for that gun (the RRA Coyote)? How far out will a 3-9x get me? I'm trying to keep a pretty tight budget (assuming I buy that rifle) - are the scopes in the $200 range decent? I'm thinking there are a few Bushnell and Nikon scopes in that range, are those ok?

From the Brady document PP posted. There are so many inaccuracies in that thing it's rediculous. Of course, these are the people that want to ban something based on how it looks so logic doesn't really matter.
quote:
A pistol grip or thumbhole stock, which facilitates firing from the hip,
allowing the shooter to spray-fire the weapon.

Other then poorly trained jihadist and movie actors, who shoots a rifle from the hip? More importantly, doesn't a pistol grip make it harder to shoot a rifle from the hip?

It's also good to see that Jim Zumbo's dumb@ss made it in there as well. How that guy's still getting to make a living as a gun/outdoors writter I'll never know.

OK, I've got about $500 in Academy gift cards and want to buy an AR from there. WIth the gift cards, my final cost is going to be $450 or so.

They have two rifles on sale through today, a Bushmaster A2M4 ($900) and a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Optics-Ready ($860).

Which is the better rifle? It appears the S&W has integral picitinny-style rails that I could mount a scope or holosight on and the Bushmaster has the fixed "handle" on top with sights (not sure if this could accomodate a holosight or scope).

Any thoughts / opinions on which is the most versitile or best buy?
lexofer
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Out of those two I'd definitely get the M&P. You can always put a removable carry handle or iron sights on it but you can't easily go in the reverse with the Bushmaster.

Obviously never used a silencer on wild hogs, you can drop 8-10 before they ever realize what hit 'em.

And no I am not being irresponsible shooting 8 at a time, I just have a huge hog problem.

Well fellas, I finally bit the bullet so to speak and picked up a DPMS AP 4 Carbine (M4). An acquaintance of mine recommended that I use high quality FMJ for the first 200 rounds. I usually shoot at a range that doesn't allow FMJ, so I've got two questions. First, what do y'all think about this advice? Second, does anyone have a recommendation on a range in the Dallas area that allows FMJ? (I'd like this regardless of whether I should stick with them or not at first. I've got several hundred 7.62x54R FMJ for my Mosin Nagant that needs to get used.)

Thanks!

Playboy -

Gibson Outpost Shooting Range

Be forewarned, they are range nazis out there, so follow the rules they have posted to a T (from my limited reading of this forum so far, I don't think that will be a problem, but just want to forewarn anyone that goes - they're pretty strict about safety).

I'll be headed that way soon when my AK arrives

2K, I have no problems with strictly following rules. Hate being at a place where newbies are doing crazy/dangerous stuff. But thanks for the warning.

Not to turn this thread away from AR stuff, but what kind of AK you getting? I've got a Norinco and would like to maybe pickup another one.
FTAG 2000

Playboy, agreed about the safety issue. Particularly out there, it's one of the known places in Dallas to go shoot ARs, AKs, so you get lots of people out there with more toys and money than sense.

I don't mind, and they have the rules posted before you even walk in the shop. Some people have a problem with stuff like the fact they only let you take the weapon you're shooting to the range it's intended for (ex: you have to leave your pistol in the car if you're going to the rifle range to shoot, then when you get done with the rifle you go put it up and then bring out the pistol, etc.).

Seen them head off a couple of potential dangerous situtions with idiots out there, so I have no problem with it.

As to the AK, I'm getting the one from AIM Surplus... Romanian GP WASR 10/63....

http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/NEW_AK_WASR_RIFLE_w__Bayonet_Lug___Muzzle_Break.html

From reading, looks like it will need a little TLC to fine tune, and I plan on refinishing the furniture when it arrives...
