How long do you want to ignore this user?
Can we please end this.

Certain types of photographers need to have equipment that makes it a very expensive profession. For example, sports photographers...

Other types of photographers do not need lots of equipment and can get by very cheaply. For example, fine arts photographers...

Can you both agree that the level of expense is completely dependent on what type of photography you do?

I did.

Lets see:

ehhh...photography is only expensive for an equipment ***** and the poor..

The jabs all came from you. You are being an ass for no good reason on a thread that is here to help people. Quality work, there. I wasn't the one that attacked - you are.

Yes. And getting back to the original statement which I disagreed with, that doesn't make you an equipment ***** or poor. Choosing to be a marketing or sports photographer as your career doesn't mean you are an equipment ***** or poor. I am neither. Druggist is wrong, but he said that only as an attack for no real reason.

Shot with a G10 yet? It will produce just as good, if not superior, photos than most cheap 70/300s on the market, and will cost less than most slr+lens combos, and is a high enough resolution sensor to crop for what you need. I would rather have a little less zoom and a photo IN FOCUS and wihtout motion blur than a tight shot of blurry legs and an out of focus body.

Sorry, for most people, those lenses are not worth the investment/return ratio.

And this applies to how many photographers? And did someone force you to become a photographer? It was life decision you made based on your wants and desires of your life. It's a want.

How do you justify your comments about dentistry being expensive or being a restaurateur - at the end of the day you all chose to do those things.

We all make choices every day. If you WANT to be a professional photographer, you NEED to spend a lot on equipment.

If you WANT to be a hobbyist and take certain kinds of photos, you NEED to spend at least enough to get the glass to take the pics you want.

It isn't all one thing or the other.

Ok,,,

I am just starting out with DSLR with Canon EOS Si with 18-55 IS lens. I added 50 mm 1.4 and 100 Macro.

I am thinking about 70-200 IS 2.8L but, now average cost has gone up $1800. So, will it get cheaper any time soon? is it $1000 better than 70-200 4.0? Is it too heavy to be useful for family outing? Should i just save money and just get the 55-250 mm IS

My subject is basically family/ kids and stuff I grow in the garden.

thanks

You may want to look at the 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS. Also, some recommend you get the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 instead of the Canon f4 version.

I have the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L, and it is a fantastic lens. I don't take a lot of pictures in low light with it so I don't need the IS.
Stymied

It won't get any cheaper. It's been on the market for a while (early 2000s ) and has always been around $1700.

If you want a fast lens, the 70-200mm f/2.8 non-IS may be for you. I'm thinking about selling mine if your interested....

unless you do a lot of low light shooting, I personally don't see the need to shell out that much money on a lens

Any reason in particular that you're selling, Aero? I've been contemplating picking up a 2.8 non-is for a while.
Stymied

No real reason... I have 6 lenses and its probably the least used of the 6. It would just clear up space in the bag and maybe allow me to add a macro or a tilt shift lens to the mix.

If I shot weddings or sports though, there is no way you could pry it out of my hands (unless I was upgrading to the IS).
Gitzo

Yup, that's pretty much exactly what I'd use it for. That, and portraits...such great bokeh.

For the uses you stated, I second the sigma recomendation.

Might also look used...

I'm admittedly biased, but the ONLY Siggy I'd buy is the 150mm macro.

I've shot a little with the 70-200 and 100-400 on a 1Ds MkIII and the 100-400 on my MkII body. Yes the canon is better, but for 99% of the world is not even close to worth the extra money.

sigma has some very solid lenses and some real crapsterpieces.

I have two od the 70-200l and the siggy and can use them interchangablly.

my siggy 300mm is a great lens esp for the price.

and you are kidding yourself if you say you wouldn't want the 200-500 2.8.

That lens looks retarded.

The one review on Amazon (for those not wanting to look, the lens costs $29,000)

quote:
The Sigma 200-500 is simply amazing. Yes it's a little pricey, but if shooting long-range targets is your passion, this is the piece for you. Just last week I was using mine to shoot some deer out in a field. I was probably about 300 yards away from them. With the Sigma I was quickly and easily able to line up a nice shot. The detail on the image was amazing...so crisp and clear, so I could aim exactly where I needed with no fear of missing or blowing the shot. With that I pulled the trigger and took the shot. The deer dropped immediately. When I approached it I found my shot hit my mark exactly. The deer's neck was almost completely separated only attached to the body by a small thread of flesh. Getting this deer head and neck mounted to display in my den was so much easier than normal as the part I needed was already separated from the deer. This is simply the best piece of artillery I've ever used. I highly recommend.

OMG, that lens has to weigh more than I do. I could never hold that. I don't even want a 70-200 because I don't think I could hold it.

Maybe I should have done some weigh lifting before I decided to get into photography.

You realize that thing has it´s own battery IN THE LENS BARREL to run the autofocus mechanism.

Say it´s retarded all you want, somewhere in the back of your mind you have this wicked little demon making you really want one.....

Guitar wanna buy one and let us borrow it?

Looks like Canon is releasing their 7D today.

18MP
1080p video with selectable 30/25/24 frame rates
480p at 60fps
8 frames per second
Dual Digic 4 processors
ISO 100-6400 natively, and can go low and high
1.45 crop factor
100% view
19 AF points
All new Servo tracking
Can divide the AF into 5 regions and set a region rather than an individual point
Uses the 1Dmark3 pentaprism
63 area metering
AEB settings have been expanded
150k click shutter

Things I dont know if how well the noise handling is and how good the buffer is.

Yep. Usually Canon stuff isn't leaked out like this was.

GS, where did you see the 1.45 crop factor? I've seen some leaks referencing an APS-C sensor (1.6 CF), and even some rumors about a APS-H (1.3) with a 1.6 "crop mode." Interesting that 1.45 is right in the middle, perhaps that is the largest they can make and still use the EF-S line of lenses?

Hey GS, I just read about the 100mm 2.8 L with IS that's coming out...do you think that IS would be worth the extra money?
