On a commuter, you will have to gate check it. But the Airport Security is made to be a carry on and fits all regulations. Overseas, they have smaller regulations, so there is a Think Tank Airport International. There is also a Think Tank Airstream which should work for commuter planes.

When I am going to fly commuters, I pack a dorky photo vest. If they make me gate check it, I put all the lenses and cameras in my vest. Can't make me check my clothes and there is no regulations as to how much your clothes weigh.

I'm traveling to Europe and am taking the Think Tank StreetWalker HardDrive, which is a backpack. I'll post a pic of the packed bag later this week.

Just bought a Nikon 10-24mm lens. Like the way the pics look. Interior shots of a home.

Thanks for this thread. Extremely helpful.

Uli,

What is that rig for?

i work in hollywood and use the 5DII and 7D for making films. right now i just use canon L series glass (which is still bad ass).
i am about to buy the zunow PL adapter (about $3000) so i can use cooke, zeisse or red pro lenses. also i am about to use the 5DII to shoot a graphic novel on green screen and then use aftereffects to make it look hand drawn.

Thinking about buying a tamron 17-50mm or the 28-75mm for an italy trip over christmas. Any places in Plano/Frisco area where I can rent these two lenses to help me decide which one to get?

I am ready for a new body!

I presently have the canon xti, kit lens, sig 30mm f/1.4, and the sig 70-200 f/2.8.

From my understanding, whic is very little, my sigs do not work with a full frame. That is correct, right? So what does that mean? If i have a 7d, will they not even connect to the body?

So, if this is the case, i must either get a crop sensor or sell the sigs. I would prefer to keep the sigs because I ilke them quite a bit. So, if I am looking for a new crop sensor body, which one do you recommend? The 60d has decent reviews but some don't like the light-weight feel.

The sigma 70-200 will work on full frame. I believe the 30 will connect, but vignette badly (about 95% certain on that). The kit lens won't connect.

But a 7D is an APS-C body, not full frame. All your crop lenses will work as expected on a 7D.

Like I said, my understanding is very little. Thanks fot the info.

I guess the question is, what is the best body that will us my sigs?

What is your experience level?

How much money do you have?

For Nikon, the D5100 is a very good body but does no autofocus with all Nikon lenes. The body does not have a screw drive built into the body and will only auto focus with Nikon "S" lenses with the focus motor built into the lens.

Same with the off brand lenses.

That being said, there are enough of the lenses that will AF with the D5100 to cover pretty much anything you need (really, it's not that big of an issue unless there is some old lens you absolutely HAVE to have - by then, you'll have a better camera body).

Can't tell you about Canon, don't know them.

caleblyn, the 7D is generally acknowledged as the best APS-C body that Canon makes right now. It will be fully compatible with all of your current lenses.

The 60D is a small step below, but may be more in line with what you're looking for. The 60D is a bit of a departure from the previous bodies in the XXD series. It has a smaller form factor, slightly less frames per second (5.7 compared to the previous 6.0), and uses SD memory rather than CF memory. The 7D stepped up to 8 FPS, uses CF cards, and has a better autofocus capability.

So the question is, what do you like and dislike about your current body? What's holding you back, and what sort of things do you shoot? The answers to those could help narrow down which body meets your needs.

I have three kids under 7 years old so take a guess what I shoot? I also take international trips frequently and end up shooting a lot of landscape shots and opportunity shots with those people.

The XTi is fine for now. I guess ia have had it for three years and am wanting (not needing) something new.

Like they said, the 7D is the best for what you had, although it may be due for replacement soon. The 60D is the second best and has been out for a year. My guess is that will be replaced in the next 6mo.

That cheat sheet is cool looking, but saying to keep your meter at zero is not really the greatest advice! I see that all the time..."but I had my meter at zero, why is it under exposed?"

Is there anyway we can create a new thread to help create tutorials on how to take certain shots or some other way to improve a photographers skill?

I know I don't really have the time to create all that content. Not sure how much content we would get.

What I do write like that, I generally put on my general blog, Thomas Campbell Photo then try to cross post it on here.

Hey, GS, didn't you get an external mic for your camera for shooting video? What did you get or recommend? I ended up shooting a fair amount of video on our recent vacation, but wind noise is a pain in a lot of it. It wasn't a big deal for the most part, but it is rather annoying.
Guitarsoup

Yeah, I bought the Zoom H4n

You can also plug wireless mics into it or get a wired Lav or shotgun or boom mic for it.

I'm looking at anything to help with portraits. Right now, I do well with upclose, full frame portraits. When I back out and try to use negative space I fumble around and don't like what I end up with.

GS and others:

Would the tamron 28-75 be a good lens for december trip when it will most be cloudy and low light environment? I only have the 50mm and want to get a lens that has a wider focal length.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yep. That's a pretty all-around good lens. The 50mm 1.8 will let in a litte more than 2x more light, though.

It is a good lens but know that it is a full frame lens so in your DSLR it's really going to give you a 42-112 angle of view.

If you want to go wide, look for a cropped sensor lens like the tokina 11-16/F2.8 or Tokina 12-24/F4.

I have started to hear some rumblings that there might be some Canon announcements in the very near future. Have any of you heard any rumors about upgrades to the 7d?
